We have a few fruit-bearing trees and some shrubs for those of you who live in town or are just interested in having some smaller items to plant on your property. Unfortunately, trees & shrubs across the board are limited again this year so there are fewer varieties to choose from. We tried to select the most mature trees in the largest sizes to limit mortality. We have also included some information on each tree and shrub to help you decide which ones are best for you and your hopeful planting location. Coniferous Varieties Eastern White Pine - Likes moist to dry woodlands and forested slopes. Excellent for wildlife. Great for areas within 5075 ft of water for erosion control. Fast growth; Long-living; 50-80’ tall. Norway Spruce - Likes forest plantations and cultivated sites. Prefers full to partial sun. Establishes well in Goldenrod and good for song birds. Med-Fast growth; 40-60’ tall. Colorado Blue Spruce - Likes moist, acidic soils with full sun. Does not tolerate shade. Shallow root system. Popular for landscaping and Christmas trees. Slow to Med growth; 30-65’ tall. Deciduous Varieties Red Oak - Prefers neutral to acidic soil pH with wide moisture tolerance. Handles moist to dry sites. Deep roots. Great for areas within 50-75 ft of water for erosion control. Fast growth; 60-75’ tall. Sawtooth Oak - Sawtooth oak seedlings do not do well in poorly drained soils or in areas subject to flooding. If under water for 24 hours in the summer, they will not survive. This plant has been found to be resistant to disease and insect damage. Sawtooth oak is a large species, reaching a mature height of 70 feet. White Oak - Although found on many soil types, white oak does best on coarse, deep, moist, well-drained, with medium fertility, and slightly acid soils. It is well adapted to heavy soils and north and east-facing slopes. Queues alba L., It is a large, stately tree that grows up to over 100 feet tall, and 38 to 50 inches in diameter, with a round to wide spreading irregular crown Tulip Poplar - Tulip poplar is exacting in soil and moisture requirements. It does best on moderately moist, deep, well drained, loose textured soils; it rarely grows well in very dry or very wet situations. This tree is rapid growing, attaining heights of 80- 120 feet and a trunk diameter of 2 to 5 feet. Young trees have a pyramidal form Wild Black Cherry- The wild black cherry tree (Prunis serontina) is an indigenous North American tree which will grow to between 60-90 feet tall with lightly serrated, shiny, dark green leaves. Growing black cherries have low branches which tend to droop and brush the ground. Black Walnut - Grows in a variety of soils, but best in fertile, well-drained soil, height at maturity 50 to 75 feet. This tree attracts many mammals but is also home to many pests like borers, scales, tent caterpillars and aphids. The tree is not recommended for planting in lawns because the berries tend to be messy. Shrub & Fruit-Bearing Varieties Winterberry—Tolerant of acidic and wet soils. Winterberry is a globular, upright, medium-sized shrub, typically 6-10 ft. tall (to 20 ft. in some circumstances). Crimson Crisp (Apple) - Medium size and crimson red color over 95% of surface. Very firm with a tart complex flavor. The tree is grower friendly matures in mid-season and will keep in cold storage 6 mo. Pink Lady (Apple) - Medium to large fruit with a sweet-tart flavor and a long storage life. Matures 200-215 days after bloom . Matures November in south-central PA. Honeycrisp (Apple) - Fruit averages 3” and up, with a crisp, juicy sweet-tart flavor. Winer hardiness for northern growing . Tree is non-vigorous and late blooming. Liberty (Apple) - Medium-sized, yellow-fleshed dessert apple that is scab resistant. Fruit should ripen between the end of Sept. and early Oct. Best planted in full sun. Can reach 15’ tall. Kristin (Cherry) - An exceptional new early-season Cherry. Tree is productive and hardy Heartland (Cherry) - This open pollinated Windsor cross is an early to mid-season . Very Vigorous Benton (Cherry) - An early to mid-season . Self Fertile and of excellent quality. Stardust (Cherry) - A late Season, late blooming and self fertile cherry. This is a winter hardy tree.
