APRIL 2017
Dr. Al Miller Holocaust Survivor
Dr. Al Miller shares his story of growing up as a German
Jew during WWII, at the Main Library at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5 and again on Wednesday, April 12.
Born in Berlin in 1922, Dr. Miller has many happy memories of his
early childhood. As an active youth who enjoyed sports, he remembers
the day he was no longer allowed into his favorite recreation center
because Jews had been banned from the facility. Many of his childhood
friends joined the Hitler Youth and stopped being friends with him. An
enthusiastic student, he became the last Jewish student in his class to
continue to attend school until it was too unwelcoming for him to stay.
In 1936, Dr. Miller was present at the infamous Berlin Olympics
where Jesse Owens won four medals. As German Jews faced increasingly
difficult conditions, his family arranged to leave the country and resettle. Dr. Miller was sent to Switzerland in 1937 and was separated from
his family. His brother was sent to England and his parents remained in
Germany and endured Kristallnacht. The family was eventually reunited in England before immigrating to America in 1939. Dr. Miller settled
in Hamilton, Ohio where he practiced optometry until his retirement.
Lt. Colonel Richard Cole Last of the Doolittle Raiders
On April 18, 1942, eighty men took off on a
top-secret mission to bomb Japan. The mission
was thought to be impossible. These men,
led by Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle, came to be
known as the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders. Today
only Lt. Col. Doolittle’s co-pilot Lt. Colonel
Richard Cole survives. In honor of the
75th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid,
Lt. Col. Cole will share his story at the
Main Library on Wednesday, April 19 at
1 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m.
A 30-minute showing of “Raiders Remembered” will precede Lt .Colonel Cole’s talk and
a book signing will follow. Co-sponsored by
Simon Kenton SAR & Boone County DAR.

Read some literary fiction this month!
Literary fiction is high quality, often prize-winning fiction, that is valued for its
quality of writing and creative use of language. Literary fiction tends to be character-driven rather than plot-driven. Think of a character coming to terms with
himself and his world. This contrasts with genre fiction where plot is the central
concern. Literary fiction often contains social commentary, political criticism, or
focuses on the human condition.
Authors of literary fiction are consistently featured in major book review sources, and their books are often used for thought-provoking discussions.
Here are a few well-known literary fiction authors. Please ask a librarian at
your local branch for additional suggestions.

Balloons Over Boone by Hillary Delaney, Local History Associate
Though the sight is not uncommon
in modern times, a hot air balloon is a
wonder to behold. We have always been
fascinated with flight, but the balloon
represents a different kind of air travel.
In the basket of a hot air balloon, the
view passes more slowly, and the mechanics are simple physics. Little wonder that
this trend was a national obsession in the
19th century.
There were several noteworthy
balloon “events” in and around Boone
County during the heyday of ballooning.
Professor Harry Gilbert, a balloonist with
ties to the circus and a flair for marketing, made a surprise stop in Boone
County in 1877. Gilbert began his ascent
from the grounds of the then two-yearold Cincinnati Zoological Gardens, and
headed in the direction that the wind
determined. He landed on the Buckner
farm, near Florence, and was met by Mr.
Garvey, who owned neighboring property.
Garvey was given a short ascension in the
balloon, in return for a wagon ride back
to Cincinnati. The highest altitude on this
short jaunt over the river was 6,100 ft.
Another balloon adventure occurred
in 1880. Two men who had departed
Dayton the day before, landed on Henry
Corbin’s farm in Union. A crowd, numbering about 300 people, soon arrived,
having seen the craft in the air making
its slow progress toward descent. Several
people were given a rope-tethered ascension ride, taking them up to 400 feet, and
down again before the aeronauts were on
their way. Walton was to be the next stop,
but the wind took them to the Howlett
