Highlights on Kazakhstan
The Republic of Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan, officially the Republic of Kazakhstan, is a
transcontinental country located in Central Asia and
Eastern Europe. With an area of 2.7 million square
kilometers (1.05 million sq. mi), Kazakhstan is the ninthlargest country and the largest landlocked country in
the world. It is neighbored clockwise from the north by
Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and
also borders on a significant part of the Caspian Sea.
Kazakhstan is ethnically and culturally diverse. Kazakhs
are the largest group. Kazakhstan has 131 ethnicities,
including Kazakh, Russian, Uyghur, Ukrainian, Uzbek, and
Tatar. It has a population of 16.2 million, of whom
around 63% percent are Kazakhs.
Kazakhstan allows freedom of religion, and many
different beliefs are represented in the country. Islam is
the religion of about two thirds of the population, and
Christianity the faith of most of the remainder.
The Kazakh language is the state language, while Russian is also officially used as an "equal"
language (to Kazakh) in Kazakhstan's institutions.
Kazakhstan is officially a presidential republic. The first and only president is Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Kazakhstan is also a member of the United Nations, Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe, Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). It is an
active participant in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Partnership for Peace program. Kazakhstan
is also a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Economic Cooperation
Organization and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. On December 1, 2007, it was revealed that
Kazakhstan has been chosen to chair OSCE for the year 2010.

Almaty is a financial, business, cultural center not only for Kazakhstan, but for other
neighboring countries such as Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tadjikistan, and Turkmenistan.
Almaty is the previous official capital city, for the last 5 years is has been changed
info a new capital of investment, business, trade and commerce not only for
Kazakhstan, but also for the other Central Asian countries. The major airline
companies like “Turkish Airlines”, “KLM”, “Lufthansa”, “BMI”, “Ethihad”, “Air Astana”
and “TransAero” have direct flights to Almaty. Almaty offers you best hotels,
restaurants, nightclubs, beautiful mountains and other facilities.
EDUCATION SYSTEM
The first stage of education in Kazakhstan is elementary (or primary) school for
grades through four. The second is secondary school for middle grades from five
through nine. Upon graduation from secondary school students are given the
choice of either continuing to attend the same school or entering the vocational or
technical school. Having completed one’s secondary education, one can either
become a part of work force or go on college (institution of higher learningInstitute).

Students may get free of charge higher education in higher educational institution
and the limited number of the state grants is given each academic year on a
competitive base. The system of higher education prepares highly- skilled experts on
various industries. Today the young people of Kazakhstan have opportunity to choose
and acquire various types of education in Kazakhstan and abroad and build their
lives according to their ambitions.
The government of Kazakhstan has announced that 3000 young Kazakhs will this
year avail of a state- backed foreign study. The bursaries are worth between 50 000$
and 90 000$ ( depending on the host country and university’s status) and cover all
education- related expenses.
This 2014 year we have 134 648 graduates preparing to get higher education, 64%
of that (87000) are preparing to get education in local universities. Other 20% are
preparing to get education abroad. In general about 47 000 people are leaving the
country to get education abroad. Please see scheme.
