Teaching, Researching, and Tripping in the School Garden:Stories from an Arts-Based Research Metissage
Compelledbytheideathata“teacher”neednotbethefamiliarsolitaryhumanfigureinthefrontofaclassroom
butcouldbevarioushumanandmore-than-humanentanglements,Juliaworkedwithstudentteachersanda
gardenontheUBCcampustocreateconditionsfor“becomingteacherstogether.”Thearts-basedresearchproject
positionedthegardenandtheteachereducationbuildingasgenerativespacesforaseriesofsite-specificart
installationsthatsheentitled“Threadssown,grown&given.”Inthispresentation,shewillsharegleaningsfrom
theplantandnonhumananimalteachersthatfiguredintheresearchproject(specifically:flax,fireweed,and
spiders)anddelveintothedifficultknowledgethatwasknottedintothematerialpracticesofteachingwith
gardens,namelythedifficulthistoryofschoolgardens,struggleswithfailure,andrelationshipswithlandinthe
contextofsettlercolonialismandtheincreasinglyneoliberalacademy.
JuliaOstertaglivesandgardensontheshoresoftheKichisìpi(OttawaRiver)wheresheisraisingtwoyoung
children,writing,andteachingcoursesrelatedtoteachereducation,garden-basededucation,environmental
education,foodeducation,andarts-basedresearch.Sheiscurrentlyworkingonacollaborativeresearchproject
withtheUniversityofOttawa,theOttawa-CarletonDistrictSchoolBoard,andtheOttawaForestandNature
School.Shewonthe2016CanadianAssociationforCurriculumStudiesDissertationAward.
