The Fauvism Trail
The association “Fenêtre ouverte sur le Fauvisme” (Open window upon Fauvism), came
into being on the 12th November 1993, with the objective of “cultural and touristic development
for heritage and for the arts surrounding Fauvism.
Its first initiative was to conceive and put into place the “CHEMIN DU FAUVISME”: a
pedestrian circuit through the town punctuated by 20 reproductions of the paintings of
MATISSE and DERAIN, completed during their stay in Collioure, installed in the actual places
where they were painted.
Visitors may freely discover the “Chemin du Fauvisme”, or opt for a guided visit (individually
or in groups, upon reservation): with a pedagogic study of the oeuvres.
A passionate discovery in this highly colourful village in the steps of two great masters who
initiated the first grand artistic movement of the 20th century; resting close to the biographies,
their immersion in the Collioure of that period, the chronology of their studios, the “preFauvism” and what the movement would become, and more generally the birth of Modern
Art in the Roussillon. An invitation, also, to witness the parallels between the place as it is
today and how it was a century ago.
Today, the association proposes other guided walks to the public, for example: “HENRI
MATISSE AND COLLIOURE”: 1905-1906-1907-1911-1914; from the lyricism of “Fenêtre
Ouverte” (1905) to the analysis of “Porte-Fenêtre à Collioure” (1914), Henri Matisse
marked his visits to Collioure with major œuvres, being fundamental stages in the evolution
of his visual work as an artist.
From the auto-determination of colour infused with joie de vivre, the movement from
sculpture to painting, the outsider vision of decorative arts, this visit truly puts emphasis upon
the richness and diversity of the work accomplished by Matisse in Collioure. The
museographic approach to his work presented in the “Chemin du Fauvisme” focuses on the
increasing artistic ambition of the artist’s research during the period 1905-1914, and more
specifically during his five visits in Collioure.
The association also manages the ESPACE FAUVE, located on the Quai de Admirauté, at the
entrance of Voramar where hostesses greet and inform the public as well as offer a whole
range of cultural products related to Fauvism or visit themes: postcards, posters, books,
videos ... (for more information or tour bookings, contact Espace Fauve).
It is also involved in the Festival des Musiques Fauves and the Festival des Trois Cultures,
showing thus that the concept of "Fauvism", in its broadest sense, can also be displayed in
other artistic fields besides Painting...
