ELECTRONICS RECYCLING
Rapid introduction of new technology has resulted in constant upgrades
of electronic equipment and gadgets. Upgrades happen so fast that we
regularly discard obsolete models of mobile phones, gaming systems,
computers and other electronic devices in order to cope up with the change.
When people just throw away large volumes of electronics it is a waste of
very valuable recyclable resources. Most components in electrical equipment,
including hazardous components, can be recycled through proper recycling
companies safely and properly. Disposal is not the answer and PA Law now
requires electronic items to be recycled. It is ILLEGAL to dispose of them in
landfills.
There are many environmental, social, and economic benefits from recycling
electronics. Here are reasons why…
WHY MUST WE RECYCLE ELECTRONICS?
Reduces waste by keeping items from ending up in landfills, using up
valuable space and also keeps them from releasing toxic chemicals into the
environment.
Precious metals and steel are reused for other purposes, preventing
environmental damage from mining valuable and limited natural resources
and reduces energy costs from transporting and processing raw materials.
CITY OF ERIE
COVERED ELECTRONICS
RECYCLING DROP-OFF DAY
Metals and toxins, including cadmium, mercury, chromium, bromide, lead,
arsenic, beryllium, and halogenated flame retardants in the plastics, are
recycled or disposed of safely and properly instead of being released as
pollutants into the air, the soil and the water table, as items slowly rust away
in landfills.
Non-metallic parts are used in manufacturing new products, reducing the
demand for landfills and preventing their hazardous disposal.
Still working devices and gadgets are refurbished like new and may be
given back to the community, either to disadvantaged members, non-profit
organizations, schools, and charities, providing tax incentives as well as
benefiting those who receive them.
Recycling existing items and materials is cheaper and more efficient than
manufacturing products from raw materials, and also helps to reduce
pollutants and greenhouse gases, by-products of the manufacturing process.
Recycling and reusing existing materials creates healthier occupational
and environmental conditions for individuals and communities, locally and
globally.
Recycling provides for our future. Our generation is highly resourceful
in its creation and use of electronic technology. However, our environment
pays the price for this ingenuity. To provide a healthy future for our children
and grandchildren, we must strive to do our best to take care of our home,
our planet. We must RECYCLE & REUSE.

s Mayor of the City of Erie, I would like to thank you for
another successful year of recycling. In 2013, our combined
efforts kept our recycling programs successful. The City collected
over 5,000 tons of recyclable household material, which resulted
in a savings of more than $200,000 for City residents.
We will continue services such as the Single Stream Recycling
and Composting Programs, the Christmas Tree Collection,
periodic prescription drug collections, and our annual Tire
Collection Day. For the past several years, we have been
recycling approximately 4800 tires each year. This is equivalent
to 96,000 pounds or 48 tons of tires recycled each year!
In 2013, we were pleased to be able to hold an electronics
recycling drop-off event free of charge for City of Erie residents.
It was held on the same day as our annual tire recycling drop-off
day. The new Pennsylvania Law put into effect January 1, 2013 made it so these items are no
longer allowed to be disposed of in landfills. We accepted and recycled over 70,000 pounds
of electronic materials. Items accepted included televisions, monitors, computers and
computer accessories. It was a great accomplishment to be able to accept so many of these
items for recycling. We recycled 35 tons of electronics along with 48 tons of tires, from Erie
residents, all in a one day event!
We continue to strive to improve our current programs and add new programs and options
whenever possible. Our goal is to make life more convenient and easier for our residents, while
enhancing the productivity and beauty of our community. Thank you for being good stewards
of our precious resources and helping to make Erie a more environmentally aware community. Please keep recycling!
