Study of History Unit: Learning Targets
SOH 1: I can define PRAISE and use it to describe different cultures.
SOH 2: I can describe primary sources, secondary sources, and artifacts.
SOH 3: I can use primary, secondary sources, and artifacts to understand history
SOH 4: I can define and correctly use AD and BC.
SOH 5: I can create and read timelines
SOH 6: I can explain how the earliest civilizations started
Egypt and Mesopotamia: Learning Targets
EM 1: I can explain how the 4 environmental factors affect human settlement.
EM 2: I can describe the geography of Mesopotamia and explain how it affected the civilization.
EM 3: I can describe the culture of Mesopotamia.
EM4: I can describe Hammurabi and explain the importance of Hammurabi’s Code.
EM 5: I can describe the geography of Egypt and explain how it affected the civilization.
EM 6: I can describe the culture of Egypt.
How do we know students are learning the intended content or skills?
Students will complete a unit test to assess knowledge of each learning target. Activities in each unit to learn the information are listed
below:
Introduction to the Study of History
*Students will complete learning checks/quizzes on elements of culture, timelines, and primary and secondary sources.2. practice using
the elements of culture with CPS system. 3.practice in using timelines and understanding AD and BC. 4. analyze secondary and primary
sources in a variety of ways.
Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia:
1. Students will complete a History Mystery on a topic from this unit. 2. complete an interactive lesson learning the effects of geography.
3. create a foldable to introduce Egyptian culture. 4. complete a web activity on Egypt 5.take an Extended Response 6. discuss
Hammurabi’s Code in the form of a Socratic Seminar.
Supports when students do not learn the intended
content or skills:
*Students will be able to review all information
after each learning check/self assessment of
their progress.
*Students can retake any learning targets after
the unit test. Extra learning materials and/or
reteaching will be available.
*6th period intervention will be in place for any
student still at the “1” level on any learning
targets.
*Extra time on assignments or performance
task until students have achieved
understanding/mastery
Extensions for students who have already learned
the intended content or skills:
*An assortment of primary/secondary sources will be
available for students at mastery level so they can
pick/choose topics of choice.
*Students will be able to pick an extension activity in the
Egypt and Mesopotamia unit to extend their score to the
“5” level. It will be of their choice of topic and
presentation style.
*Further exploration of Egyptian culture through class
assignments and web activities.
*Reading of Gilgamesh
*Leadership roles during cooperative learning and/or
class assignments
