Rentals, continued from previous page
these. If you thought Face/Off
was violent, then you haven't
seen half of what Mr. Woo can
pull off.
Mother
This was another Grade-A
comedy that was largely ignored
by the mainstream. If stars
Albert Brooks as a writer who
wants to re-examine his distant
relationship with his mother,
played by Debbie Reynolds
(Carrie Fisher's mother, by the
way). It's funny, and thought
provoking at same time. I
strongly recommend it.
Bill and Ted's Excellent
Adventure
While a lot of people today
can remember the duo of Bill
and Ted, very few of the pebple
I've talked to can remember the
actual film they were in, so
that's why I included, it on the
list. Do you know who played
Ted? Why, it was none other
than • our old friend Keanu
Reeves (read my review of
Sweet November for my feelings on this guy). So why did I
include this film? Hey, I'd pay to
see Keanu Reeves pretend to be
a stoner.
Jesus of Montreal
This is one of the best foreign
films I've ever seen (I know,
Montreal isn't exactly foreign,
but the film is in French). The
plot involves a collection of
local actors, who are called on
by a priest to create a new version of the annual passion play.
This is another film that does a
good job . at raising questions
about religion. This'one isn't ina
lot of video stores, but if you
happen to see it, don't pass it up.
This should probably be
enough to get you started.
Hopefully these films will act as
a gateway to other films, some
of which may help raise your
C.Q. (Cinema Quotient). Those
of you who are growing tired of
what Hollywood is pumping out
these days especially, should
keep these suggestions in mind.
There are some truly great films
in these stores. Choose very
carefully.
Have a great summer, and
remember; in the jungle that is
the video store, there's a lot of
dung lying around. So watch
your step!
