Using Google Classrooms for Teachers with your Students An individual account has been set up for all classroom teachers. Your students have been added to your Google classroom so it is ready to go. You can open your Google classroom by going to http://classroom.google.com and signing into your account. The screen shot at the right shows what you will see in your Google classroom. There are 3 components to your classroom (see diagram on right). 1. Stream contains all of your assignments and related information. In Stream, you can do the following: a. Assign work for your students to complete. The students will see this work when they log in to their account. b. View all work that your students submit. c. Assign a grade and make comments about the work for students to view in their account. d. Optional: Allow the students to resubmit work with the opportunity for you to re-grade their assignment. e. Create detailed Excel spreadsheets containing all of your student’s grades. The spreadsheet includes dates, grades and titles of the assignment as well as the average grades for the class. 2. Students contains a list of all of your students with an option to invite new students to join your class from the East Quogue directory of students. 3. About has information about your calendar and Google drive folder. Stream is the most important component and is where the rubber meets the road. This training will primarily concentrate on the functionality of Google Stream. Google Stream… To create an assignment, do the following: 1. Click on the Stream option 2. Click on the (+) sign in the lower right hand corner. Select Create Assignment 3. Enter a title. Instructions and due date are optional. 4. You can attach a Google Drive document, web link, YouTube video or any other attachment that you think will help the students complete the assignment. 5. When you complete this information, the assignment is complete. NOTE: When you click on ASSIGN, the assignment that you created will appear in the Stream section of all of your student’s accounts when they log in to your class at http://classroom.google.com. What Will the Students See When They Log Into Their Accounts Students will click on the class name upon logging in and then will see the assignments that you have created for them. In the diagram below, the student sees their assignments as well as the status of those assignments (ex. Not done, completed, returned). 6. 1. When they click on an assignment, they will be given the option to Create a Google doc, slide, sheet or drawing to complete their assignment. 2. If they select Google Doc (blue arrows above), a link to a Google Doc will appear for them to use to complete their assignment (Same for the other options-Sheets, Slides, Drawings). 3. Clicking on the Google Doc link will bring up a Google Doc that they can use for the assignment. All work is saved automatically so there is no need to save work. 4. When the student has finished the assignment, that student can select Turn In at the top of the screen. Until they click Turn In, they can continue to work on the project over as many days as they need to complete the work. The diagram below shows an assignment that a student has created. Once finished, he can click on the Turn In option. Optional: This student added a comment about the assignment for his teacher to read. The assignment could have been done in other Google programs such as Google Slides, Google Sheets or Google Drawings. FYI: Google Docs is similar to Microsoft Word Google Slides is similar to Microsoft PowerPoint Google Sheets is similar to Microsoft Excel Google Drawings is a graphical drawing program What Does the Teacher See After the Student Completes Assignments? When the Teacher Logs In and clicks on his class, that teacher should select the Stream option. Then, that teacher will see the status of all assignments. This will include assignments that have been turned in by the students (In this case, 1 student has turned in the Long Island Spy Ring assignment) Viewing Completed Assignments 1. To view the completed assignments, click on the word DONE to the right of the assignment. 2. Then click on the icon under the student’s name to view the assignment that that student has submitted. 3. Teachers can make comments as necessary by highlighting text and clicking on the comment button that appears (Note: The comments are color coded so that the student’s comments are a different color than the teacher comments). 4. Once you have viewed the student’s work, you can close out that tab and you will return to the assignment page where you can assign a grade by clicking on Add grade and entering a grade. 5. Once a grade is added, the teacher should click on Return to return the graded assignment to the student. 6. When you click on return, you will be given the option to make a private comment for the student to see. A grade has been entered by the teacher What Does the Student See When Work is Returned by the Teacher? The student will see the word “Returned” next to the assignment which means that the teacher has graded the assignment. 1. When the student clicks on “Open,” that student will see the grade as well as the comments by the teacher. 2. There is an option to Resubmit the Assignment. Other Options for the Teacher in Their Teacher Account Teachers can also create a spreadsheet with their student’s grades and other important information. To create a spreadsheet, follow these steps: 1. Log in to your teacher account at http://classroom.google.com. 2. Click on the gear shaped icon in the upper right corner and select one of the options to create a spreadsheet. Note: If you select one of the Download All Grades options, the spreadsheet will include grades from all of your assignments. Below is a Google Sheets spreadsheet with detailed information about all of the work that the students have completed in their Google accounts. This spreadsheet option is a tremendous timesaver for the teacher.
