Usually children are taught in smaller ‘set’ groups towards the end of Autumn 2/beginning of Spring 1 once half termly phonic assessments have taken place & levels established. Children are taught roughly 4 sounds per week - This must be flexible to meet needs of the groups – if children struggle with particular sounds, especially as digraphs are introduced then it may be necessary to spend more time recapping particular sounds before introducing new ones. Ditties & storybooks are introduced once children have completed Speed Sounds One. Phonics writing books are introduced in Spring Term once teaching ‘sets’ have been finalised.
