With reference to your mail dated 29 November 2007, inviting nominations for the 2008 WITSA
Global ICT Excellence Awards, kindly note that we have the pleasure to submit the nomination
of The Smile of the Child for the Digital Opportunity Award 2008.
The Smile of the Child
The Smile of the Child is a non – government organization that is registered and has been
licensed in Greece since 1996. Aside from the many other services the organization provides in
Greece, it runs 8 community homes through out the country which provide shelter to physically
and/ or sexually abused, abandoned or neglected children.
In 2007, The Smile of the Child provided shelter to 220 children. Although it receives no funding
from government sources, the success of the Association and its use of technology have been
done solely by its approach of including all sectors of society in an effort to save children.
Their goal is especially noteworthy given that the children in most need are those that are
marginalized and often in areas inaccessible to most services. The organization effectively uses
technology to reach out to children and adults whose voices may otherwise not have been
heard.
