Dear friends in Christ, One of the great joys of serving at St. Peter’s is the way in which you support and embrace our youth. I firmly believe that our youth represent not just the future of the church, but the present. Youth are part of the church right now, and you have embraced this in many ways: by welcoming their participation and leadership in worship; by supporting the Youth Event Scholarship (YES) fund and Community Education Fund; by funding a Youth and Family Life Ministries staff position; by attending the Sunday School Christmas program on an icy Saturday evening in December; by purchasing artwork that lined the hallway to support Together We Rise; by serving as a prayer sponsor; and by attending the annual Sunday School breakfast. It is a joy watching our youth flourish here. Our Confirmation youth planned and led four of our midweek Lenten services. One of our youth, Carter Stevens, organized a movie night to support Kids Coalition Against Hunger. Over forty youth participated in the Christmas Program. Youth are attending council meetings to share their ministry experiences. This month we have additional opportunities to support and embrace our youth. We will collect a special offering to rent a vehicle to transport twelve youth to Stony Lake Camp. We will celebrate with five of our youth as they affirm their baptism. We will conclude another year of Sunday School. At St. Peter’s, our mission is “Welcoming all to know and love Jesus.” You do more than welcome our youth – you support them, embrace them, and love them. Thank you! Peace, Pastor Ken Here I Stand Beyond Saxony [This is the fifth of a series of newsletter articles about the life of Martin Luther, as we join with the church in commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.] For the remainder of this series, the term “evangelical movement” will be used to refer to those who were part of Luther’s reform movement. Luther preferred “evangelical”, over “Lutheran”. The term “evangelical” referred to the evangel, a term used for the gospel. The evangelicals claimed that the church had long lost the gospel message. Concerned about the course of events in Wittenberg, Martin Luther left Wartburg Castle and returned there on March 6, 1522. He used his preaching to further define the evangelical movement. After returning to Wittenberg, Luther continued to develop his ideas on a wide range of subjects, especially the authority of Scripture. Luther also became more aware of issues in the larger world. He made an impact far away from Germany when he waged pamphlet warfare with England’s King Henry VIII. He expressed regret at two men burned at the stake in Brussels for testing the boundaries of the church and proclaiming the truth of the gospel. Luther also began to deal with practical matters of church and state. He was concerned with how to organize evangelical parishes, as well as a system of oversight. Luther also developed a distinction between church and civil authorities. He even addressed military dilemmas. A revolt broke out in 1524 that lasted until 1525, and became known as the Peasants’ War. The peasants were protesting against the power of princes and unjust taxes, including church revenues. They felt that Luther, who was critical of church policies, would have defended their cause. However, Luther was more concerned with authority and order, and he condemned the revolt. Some authorities believed Luther was now trying unsuccessfully to restrain revolutionary forces that he had helped unleash. Trivia Question: Martin Luther’s protector, Frederick the Wise, died on May 2, 1525. Frederick’s brother became the new elector. What was his name? A.) John the Steadfast C.) Alexander the Great B.) Philip the Magnificent D.) Charles the Humble [Answer found on page 4 of the newsletter.] Confirmation May 14 On Sunday, May 14 at the 9:30 am service, we will rejoice with the following youth who have completed Confirmation classes, and will affirm their Baptism: Derek Maier, Ashley Mathews, Ruby Neiman, Jared Kramp and Avery Paul. Our Fellowship/Outreach committee is looking to start a "lunch and/or dinner gathering for ladies" to meet at local area restaurants to socialize. If you are interested in participating, please contact any member on our committee. As many of you may have noticed, I have been wearing a funny brown robe that makes me look a lot like a monk. I wear this because I am sort of like a monk. I am a Lutheran Franciscan Friar, yes this is a real thing. I am a Novice in the Order of Lutheran Franciscans. We are a group of Lutherans who follow the simple path of St. Francis of Assisi by standing with the poor and marginalized and seeking to live out the Gospel. To elaborate on the difference between Monks and Friars, Monks are called away from the world to live a more solitary life in monasteries, where Friars are called to be a part of the world and not recess away. Not all of the members of the Order are Pastors or feel called to be a Pastor, some simply feel called to live their regular lives with a more religious tone. I know that this may not have answered your questions and may have sparked more, I do invite you to please ask me any and all questions you have and I will be happy to answer them. We also have a website that is a great place to also try and answer your questions: www.lutheranfranciscans.org. Thank you very much for all of your support. Pax et Bonum (Peace and all Good), Brother Ian Boden The choir will be taking a vacation until September. Thank you to everyone who sang with us during the year, for sharing your musical talents and faithfully attending rehearsals: Tom Latowski, Ted Anderson, Charles Butler, Ian Boden, Pastor Ken, Chris Ritter, Norene Stoecker, Marilyn Tackaberry, Sue Daniels, Katy Emerich, Adelle Schwan, Nancy Latowski, Joanne Niederhauser, Johanne Bodany, Gwen Anderson, Chris Jebrael, Janet Allington, Ruby Nieman and Lucy VanSingel. We are blessed to have choir members who support the tradition of Lutherans singing throughout history. During the Reformation, Luther broke with Catholic tradition when he encouraged members to participate in worship, especially with singing. When he revised the Catholic mass for use in his churhes, the services were jammed full of music, which were sung as a response to the grace of God. He insisted that all the people sing, not just the clergy and choirs. As we worship, our choir not only offers anthems in praise to God, but leads the congregational singing and assists in learning new hymns and liturgy. Thank you to all our faithful singers! We are always looking for new voices to join us. If you can attend an hour-long weekly rehearsal, and sing with us on a few Sundays per month, we would love to have you join us. No musical background is necessary and you can join anytime. Rehearsals are focused but fun. Anyone young or not-so-young is welcomed. Contact Renee Evans or any choir member for more information. Let’s continue the tradition of Lutheran voices raised in praises to God! Due to vacations and holidays, chime season is over until fall. Thanks to the dedicated chimers who use God's gift for worship. They are: Sue Danielson, Stephanie Neiman, Ruby Neiman, Lauren Kramp, Nancy Green, Molly Furtah, Elizabeth Gizowski, and Katy Emerich. Chris Ritter On Sunday, July 9, St. Thomas Lutheran in Sterling Heights will travel to Utica’s Jimmy John’s Field to watch the United Shore Baseball League teams, the Eastside Diamond Hoppers play the Westside Woolly Mammoths. Our congregation is invited to join them for a day that includes a food and beverage buffet, a meet and greet with the mascots, and a pre-game group photo on the field. The cost is $30. For more information, see the poster in the lobby and let Pastor Ken know if you plan to attend. (Please call or email the office at [email protected] to update information, or to add or remove names.) Trivia Answer: Answer is A. Because of Luther’s increasing role as a political figure, he began to cultivate relations with him. Batteries have been replaced in 15 units but the unit itself may need to be replaced in the remaining three. Other issues resolved include: storage items must be 24 inches from the ceiling. Nothing should be stored within 30 inches of electrical panels and no flammables like paint stored in the electrical room. There is a wheelchair in the basement.
