Junior School News Junior School News THE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER FOR BBC JUNIOR SCHOOL From the Headmaster As many of you will have heard the Queensland Government announced this week that the introduction of the new system of Senior assessment and tertiary entrance will be delayed by one year. The new system will be introduced, therefore, with Year 11 students in 2019, instead of 2018 and the first graduates under the new system will finish Year 12 in 2020. A huge amount of work has already been completed by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) in preparation for the new system. Achievements to this point in time include: • • • • • Conducting two rounds of public consultation on 35 draft syllabuses. Trialling external assessment in seven subjects with more than 20,000 students. Developing and trialling new processes for strengthening school-based assessment. Launching School Portal and commencing the redevelopment of existing ICT systems. Engaging thousands of teachers and other education partners in the change process. As Chris Rider, CEO of the QCAA, indicated in his letter to Principals this week – “Some transition activities will require more time to complete than originally planned. In particular, this means the redevelopment of Senior syllabuses and the delivery of nearly 700 professional development workshops to about 17,000 teachers. The extension will ensure that teachers have sufficient support to become completely familiar with the new system. It will also allow the QCAA to analyse the findings of assessment trials and consult further with our education partners.” BBC, under the guidance of our Head of Teaching and Learning, Barry Dean, has already made significant progress in preparing our staff and students for this new system, which will see the Overall Position (OP) system replaced by an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). We will not be changing our schedule for the professional development activities planned for our staff in 2017. Thorough preparation in 2017 will, I am sure, prove to be advantageous to our staff and students in dealing with the momentous changes that will be presented by the new system. Leadership Camp The camp conducted at Alexandra Headland this week was a very valuable learning experience for our school leaders in 2017. The boys were extremely enthusiastic in all the workshops and have learned a lot in just a few days. My thanks go to Kyle Thompson, Deputy Headmaster, who coordinated the whole program and all the staff who supported him in conducting the very successful Leadership Camp. Mr Graeme McDonald HEADMASTER CHANGE TO ARRANGEMENTS ‘Connecting with Middle School’ event We would like to take this opportunity to clarify the arrangements for the ‘Connecting with Middle School’ sessions for Year 6 students. Whilst these were published for 10 and 24 October the sessions are intended and designed for students specifically and for this reason will be held during class time on Friday 11 and Tuesday 15 November, and parents are not required to attend. The sessions will provide boys with an insight into the Year 7 experience and enable them to ask any relevant questions and meet with Middle School staff. 21 OCTOBER 2016 Upcoming Events UpcomingEvents Events Upcoming Saturday 22 October College Art Show - College Hall - 10.00am - 2.00pm Monday 24 October Athletic Development - Prep to Year 3 - JS Green 7.30am - 8.00am (3) College Art Show - Prep to Year 12 - College Hall 10.00am - 2.00pm Boys’ Club - Years 4 to 6 - Mrs Hamilton’s Room 12.50pm - 1.20pm Brief Junior School Assembly to announce Years 5 and 6 GPS Track and Field Championships Team - JS Undercroft - 1.30pm - 1.45pm Year 4 Sports Skills - Athletics - JS Green 3.15pm - 4.15pm (3)) Tuesday 25 October Junior Squad Swimming Training - 6.00am - 6.30am (gym session); 6.45am - 7.45am - (pool session) Athletic Development - Prep to Year 4 - JS Green - 7.30am - 8.00am (3) PROP Program - Mrs Hamilton’s Room 7.30am - 8.15am Boys’ Club - Years 1 to 3 - Mrs Hamilton’s Room 12.50pm - 1.20pm JS Art Club (2) - JS Artroom - 3.00pm - 4.00pm Athletic Development - Prep to Year 3 - JS Green - 3.15pm - 4.15pm (3) Bagpipe Mini Clinic - Pipe Band Room - 3.15pm - 4.00pm (3) Wednesday 26 October Junior Squad Swimming - BBC Pool - 6.45am - 7.45am Athletic Development - Year 4 - JS Green 7.30am - 8.00am (3) Year 4 Incursion - The Colonial Show MAP Classroom and 4D Classroom - 8.30am - 3.00pm Athletic Develolpment - Prep to Year 3 - JS Green - 3.15pm - 4.15pm (3) Thursday 27 October Junior Squad Swimming - BBC Pool - 6.45am - 7.45am Athletic Development - Prep to Year 3 - JS Green - 7.30am - 8.00am (3) GPS Track and Field Championships Years 5 to 7 - QSAC, Nathan 8.30am – 3.00pm Drums Mini Clinic - Years 3 to 6 - Pipe Band Room 7.30am - 8.15am (3) Boys’ Club - Years 1 to 3 - Mrs Hamilton’s Room 12.50pm - 1.20pm Year 4 Sports Skills - Athletics - JS Green - 3.15pm 4.15pm (3) Hobby House - Junior School Workshop - 3.15pm - 4.30pm (3) Bucket Band Percussion Mini Clinic - JS Music Room 3.15pm - 4.15pm (3) Music Finale Concert - College Hall 6.30pm - 8.30pm Friday 28 October Athletic Development - Year 4 - JS Green 7.30am - 8.00am (2) Athletic Development - Prep to Year 3- JS Green - 3.15pm - 4.15pm (2) Junior Squad Swimming - 3.15pm - 3.45pm - (gym session); 4.00pm - 5.00pm - (pool session) We apologise for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused. Teaching is what I ultimately love to do and my decision to become more involved in the Arrowsmith Program has certainly confirmed this for me; I’m excited at the prospect of working with the boys who are part of this wonderful program. Thanks once again to the entire community for your support; it means a great deal to me. The Prep to Year 12 Art Show ‘Navigating through time and space’ begins on Friday, with every boy in the Junior School having works of art on display. How Ms Murray continues to inspire the boys to produce magnificent pieces of art is beyond me and I would highly recommend that you make the time to come along and see the creative side of all our boys. As part of ‘Music Week’, the Junior School Music Gala Concert was held on Tuesday night and it showcased the talents of our boys in our five musical groups. The HEAD OF EARLY YEARS Junior Band, Acton Strings, Junior Strings, Percussion Ensemble and Cola Voce were superb and it is wonderful to see the great joy that the boys get from performing. Our two soloist competition winners, Lachlan Leow and Lachlan Tu, had the audience spellbound. Lachlan Leow played a piece by Khachaturian on the piano, while Lachaln Tu played some Brazilian style jazz on the marimba. Our Head of Performance Music, Mr Theo Kotzas made the comment that, “It did feel like the Junior School version of the Grand Concert!”, high praise and I would have to agree with him. JUNIOR SCHOOL SUPPORT GROUP Family Movie Night Cancelled Unfortunately the Family Movie Night scheduled for Saturday 5 November has been cancelled. Junior School Support Group Committee Last term Kourosh Asgari and Hugo Russ, with the support of their families, raised money to purchase some table tennis tables for the Junior School. These tables have arrived and they are in use at morning tea and lunch. They are proving to be extremely popular and I would like to thank Kourosh and Hugo for their initiative and drive to make Save the Date their idea become reality. I would also like to thank the Asgari and Russ families for their generosity in matching the amount raised by the boys so we were able to buy four tables. • Monday 28 November Mr Gary Musson College Hall - 11.20am - 12.45pm HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL EXTRA CURRICULAR GROUP ORDER FORMS Online Payments Parents are encouraged to order gourp photos online. This term the boys are learning about how interactions between the Sun, the Earth and the Moon cause day and night, and the seasons of the year. Peter the Astronomer projected images of the sky onto the Sky Dome. The boys have shared their favourite part of the excursion: • I loved seeing Neil Armstrong’s space suit. (Ryan) • We loved looking at the moon and learning that it isn’t in the same spot each night, and that it’s made of special rock. (John, Ostyn, Maxx, Owen, Rowan, Henry, Ray, Matthew S., Sam) and commitment. • We loved learning that the brightest stars in the Western Junior Gala Concert sky on 13 October were Venus, Saturn and Mars. (Michael and James) Congratulations to the Junior School musicians who performed at this week’s Junior Gala Concert. Throughout 2016 you have worked so hard to produce such wonderful results. Congratulations especially to all our new students for whom Gala Concert was their first ever music performance. • Our favourite part was watching the sun rise in the East and travel over the Sky Dome to set in the West. (Oscar, Kai, Julian, Brian, Hugo, Flinders) • I loved seeing the constellation of Pegasus in the sky. (Noah) • I liked it when Peter compared the sizes of all the planets. The sun is so huge that lots (about 1,300,000) of Earths can fit inside. (Dillon) • I liked seeing Earth from up in space. (Matthew A.) • I learned that Venus wouldn’t be a nice place to visit because it’s very hot (462 degrees) every day. (Ralph) • I loved learning that a meteor bumped into the Earth billions of years ago and created the moon.
