Phonemes
A phoneme is a sound segment in a word; for example,
egg has two phonemes, one represented by e, and one
represented by gg. Phonological awareness instruction
teaches students how the sounds they hear in spoken
language are represented in print. Phonemic awareness
is a basic building block in learning to read and write.
Teaching sounds along with letters helps students
understand how phonemic awareness relates to reading
and writing. Phonemic awareness instruction is most
effective when students are taught to use letters to
represent phonemes. As students develop phonemic
awareness, they use their knowledge of letter sounds to
decode and spell words.
According to the National Reading Panel, “Phonological
awareness, especially phonemic awareness, provides
children with essential foundational knowledge in the
alphabetic system. It is one necessary instruction
component within a complete and integrated reading
program.”
Using the Phoneme Photo Cards
The Phoneme Photo Cards can help students to identify
the number of phonemes in a word and improve their
auditory perception of letter sounds. The Photo Cards
include 18 each of two-, three-, and four-phoneme words.
They are color-coded by number of phonemes.
When working with students, keep in mind that breaking
words into phonemes involves learning to hear the
smallest unit of sound and is not easy. Students at this
level will need your patience and encouragement as they
learn to master this skill. Students’ prerequisite skills
include knowledge of letter sounds and good listening
skills.
Depending on the ability level of students, adjust the
manner in which you present the cards. For the very
young or struggling student, begin by identifying the
beginning sounds of each pictured two-phoneme word.
/b/ /b/… bee
(Stressing the /b/ sound)
Once that is mastered, progress to the final consonant
sound.
/e/ /e/… bee
(Stressing the long /e/ sound)
All teaching guides can be found online.

Phoneme Photo Cards
Once students have mastered the beginning and ending
sound in the two-phoneme words, have them practice
isolating and then blending the sounds together.
/b/ /e/ …. bee
Again, depending on the level of students, proceed in this
manner through the three-phoneme cards and then the
four-phoneme words.
Sorting the Phoneme Photo Cards
Included in this guide, you will see the reproducible of the
numbered cards, 2, 3, and 4. After you have laminated it
and cut the number cards apart, place the numbers in a
row in a pocket chart or on the table.
Showing one card at a time, ask students to look at the
picture and think of its sounds. Ask, “Who can tell me
how many sounds we hear in this word?” After students
identify the sounds correctly, have them place the photo
card under the number card that represents the number
of sounds in the word.
