Systems of Measurement
Canada uses 2 systems of measurement
the Système international d'unitésotherwise known as the metric system
 the imperial system
Why do you think we use 2 systems?
The Metric System
& Conversion
• The metric system is referred to as the System International (SI)
• Was developed in France in the 1790's. Canada began using the SI system
in the mid 1970's
• It is convenient to use because the units are related by powers of 10.
• The standard SI unit of length is the meter(m) , litre(l) , gram (g)
Chart for conversions:

divide
• Every step upward (or to the left) on the chart you are dividing by 10 or moving the
decimal one place to the left for each step.
• Every step downward (or to the right) you are multiplying by 10 or moving the decimal
one place to the right for each step.

Complete the following using the conversion chart below:

A) 3 meters = ___________ centimeters
B) 40 liters = ___________ deciliters
C) 600 milligrams = __________ grams
D) 5 kilometers = ___________ hectometers
E) 70 centimeters = _________ meters
F) 900 deciliters = __________ dekaliters
G) John‛s pet python measured 600 centimeters long. How many meters long was the
snake?
H) Faith weighed 5 kilograms at birth. How many grams did she weigh?
I) Jessica drank 4 liters of tea today. How many deciliters did she drink?
