everything they’re doing, put their hand in the air, stop talking, and put
their eyes on the speaker.
o If students are asked to ”Give me five!” they will freeze, put their hand in
the air, keep their body still, stop talking, and look at the person speaking.
o If students see someone with their hand in the air and their pointer finger
to their lips, they will stop talking and imitate the gesture.
2.
Entering the classroom
o When entering the classroom in the morning students will follow the
Morning Routine (see below-Page 10).
o Each time a student enters the classroom, he or she will be walking quietly
with their hands at their sides.
3.
Morning Routine
o Please see below. (Page 10)
4.
Sharpening your pencil
o Students will sharpen 2-3 pencils as part of the Morning Routine. Students
may use the electric sharpener any time before announcements and during
the End of Day Routine.
o After announcements and before the End of Day Routine, students will use
the manual sharpener. Students may sharpen their pencil (only if necessary)
during free time.
o If a student needs a sharpened pencil immediately (during an in-class
activity), he or she may turn the broken pencil in to the “Dull Pencil” bin
and take a fresh pencil from the “Sharpened Pencil” bin.
5.
Using the hand sanitizer
o Students may use one pump of hand sanitizer before leaving for lunch or
after blowing his or her nose.

6.
Asking to use the bathroom
o Students experiencing an emergency should immediately go to the
bathroom inside of the classroom.
o Students who need to use the bathroom during class instruction should
raise their hand with their pointer-finger extended and wait for the teacher
to nod yes or no.
o Students can use the classroom bathroom at any time during the Morning
Routine or immediately after lunch without teacher permission.
7.
Asking to get a drink
o Students who need to get a drink should raise their hand with their
pointer-finger and middle finger extended (peace sign) and wait for the
teacher to nod yes or no.
8.
Keeping your desk clean
o Each student will receive a pencil box, crayons, scissors, glue, pencils,
erasers, a homework folder, and a desk folder. Every item given to students
must be stored in its correct place. Fun Packets and papers that do not need
to be handed in to the teacher will be stored in the desk folder. Pencils,
crayons, etc. must be stored inside the pencil box. Students’ desks will be
checked by the Helper daily. A clean desk will help students to access
materials very quickly so that no time is lost during instruction. 
9.
Raising your hand
o When a student has a question, comment, or an answer, he or she will raise
one hand and leave it motionless in the air until called upon.
10. Receiving a paper
o If the teacher counts out a group of papers and leaves them in the center of
the students pods (desk groups), students should take one paper and
immediately write their name and date on the top. If a student in the pod
cannot reach their paper, pod leaders should make sure the paper gets to
their peer.
11. If you were absent
o Materials will be left on a student’s desk with a green “We Missed You”
paper. Students should place these materials on the Bring Back side of their
homework folder. Students will check the Pocket Chart for missed work
that must be completed at school. Students have one school day for each
excused absence to complete their work.
3
12. Lining up-Line order
o Students will be given an assigned spot in line. There will be no need to
rush to line when everyone has their own spot. The Leader of the Week will
also be the Line Leader for the week.
13.
Putting up your chair
o After packing up during the End of Day Routine, students will make sure
no one is behind them before gently putting the seat of their chair on top
of their desk.
14. Walking in the hall
o Students will travel in the hall silently, on the right side, with their hands at
their sides. Students are encouraged to quietly say hello to and smile at any
adults in the hallway.
15.
Fire drill
o When the fire alarm sounds, students will stop everything they’re doing,
get silent, immediately line up (in random order), and walk outside to our
designated fire drill spot.
16.
Respecting adults/classmates
o Our classroom relationships are built on mutual respect. Students will speak
to adults and peers with respect. Students will do as they are asked, but are
encouraged to ask questions if they don’t understand why they are being
asked to do something.
17.
Having a pencil box
o All materials belonging in the pencil box must stay in it when they’re not
being used. The pencil box is purchased by Mrs. Preston and should be
treated with respect. Students will keep their pencil box on their nametags
when in use.
18. If the intercom speaks
o Students will stop everything they’re doing, get silent, and listen to the
announcement.
19.
If an adult enters the room
o Students should greet the adult and offer assistance if Mrs. Preston is not in
the room. If Mrs. Preston is present, students should continue their work.
20. Having a water bottle
o During snack time students can drink from a water bottle. Also,
if a student is sick, he or she can keep a water bottle on their
desk, but it must only be touched when taking a drink.

21. Listening to the announcements
o When the announcements come on in the morning, students will stop
working, head to their seats (if necessary), and get silent. Students should
listen attentively. When the Salem Mission Statement begins, students
should rise, recite the Mission Statement, and remain standing for the
Pledge of Allegiance.
22. End of the Day Routine
o Please see below. (Page 11)
23. If you don’t know what’s going on
o Students should use the “Ask 3 Before Me” procedure. If a student is unsure
of what they should be doing, they should ask up to three students to find
an answer. If he or she goes through three peers who do not know what to
do, he or she should sit in their seat, raise their hand, and ask the teacher.
24. If the teacher is out of the room
o Students will be expected to act as if the teacher is still in the room.
Students should be proactive and make the right choices based on their
experience and directions given from any other adults.
25. If you finish a task early
o First, students should check the Pocket Chart for any other unfinished
work. If their Pocket Chart work is complete, students can work on their
Fun Packet or other independent work in their desk folders. Other options
after finishing a task early include: reading a book, journal writing, or scroll
work. Students are not permitted to sit with nothing to do.
26. If you need a pencil or paper
o If a student needs a pencil, he or she can borrow one from the “Sharpened
Pencils” bin. If a pod is short a paper or has an extra paper, one group
member should raise their hand to alert the teacher.
27. Sneezing & coughing
o When sneezing and/or coughing, students should turn their heads and
cough or sneeze into their elbows. If a student is able to get to a tissue in
time, he or she should cough or sneeze into the tissue. Students should
also say, “Excuse me” afterward. Students may choose to wash their hands
or get hand sanitizer once they’re finished.
5
28. Starting the day
o Sometime after announcements the teacher will ring the desk chimes.
Students will freeze with their hand up, recite the Class Mission Statement,
and begin cleaning up their morning materials. Unfinished morning work
will go into the pocket chart. Students will be asked to recite The Golden
Rule.
29. Eating in class
o Students are encouraged to bring a healthy snack to school each day.
During snack time students will quietly eat and drink their snack items.
Each child is responsible for disposing of their empty materials once he or
she is finished, or at the end of snack time. Good manners should be
prominent during snack time. 
30. Learning positions
o During instruction, students will be asked to sit in their “Learning
Positions.” Students will sit with their hands together, backs and heads
straight, and their eyes facing the teacher or board.
31. Handing in papers
o When handing in papers to the baskets in the front of the class or the tray
on the teacher’s desk, students should neatly place each paper inside. When
gathering papers at each pod, students should neatly put their papers into a
pile with all of the papers facing the same direction.
32. If you are ill/ walking to the nurse
o Students must ask permission from the teacher to be excused to the nurse.
The teacher will ascertain whether or not a peer should accompany the ill
student, and students should take a Nurse’s Pass from the clip at the
classroom door.
33. Bringing out playground equipment
o Students are permitted to bring playground equipment, such as footballs,
jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, etc. from home. They are responsible for their
own equipment and should have each item labeled with their name.
o All equipment must be held with both hands until after students are
dismissed from their lines at recess.
o Non-playground equipment, such as dolls, toy cars, books, etc. will not be
permitted to go outside.
6
34. Using the computers-procedure
o Each student will complete one 15 minute session on the SME Math
computer five days out of the six day cycle. Students who are absent will
make up their missed times once present.
o During stations, students must get on the SME Math session first and then
they can click on the SME Reading. This is the only time students should
click SME Reading. Students should always finish their math session and
never click-off early (unless there is an emergency, such as a fire drill).
o Students will flip their computer card once they’ve finished their session.
35. Reading books from the classroom library
o Students are encouraged to read during any free time they have. When
taking a book from the classroom library, students should handle the book
with care and return it to the appropriate place when finished. Students
should make sure that the cover and pages are not bent or wrinkled when
it’s returned.
36. Using the closets
o The closets in our classroom will house students’ backpacks and lunch
boxes. Students are permitted to use the closets during the Morning
Routine, snack time, before recess, and during the End of Day Routine.
o Each student will have an assigned hook to hang their backpack. Coats and
sweatshirts/sweaters will be stored in their assigned bins.
37. Using the art supplies
o Students are expected to use the classroom materials and materials
purchased by Mrs. Preston with respect. Intentional destruction of property
will result in a discussion during recess and possibly a note home for
replacement.
38. Apologizing
o Everyone makes mistakes~Mrs. Preston included!  Sincere apologies and
empathic listening are used to keep peer and teacher relationships strong.
When apologizing, the person being apologized to has the choice to
respond with “Thank you.” or “I forgive you.” “It’s ok.” is not an acceptable
response. The person apologizing must also be prepared to explain why
they are apologizing.
7
39. Turning in homework
o During the Morning Routine students should hand their math homework,
reading homework , and signed papers (if applicable) into the baskets in the
front of the room. More information about Mrs. Preston’s Homework
Policy will go home with students at the beginning of the school year.
40. Nametags
o Each student will have a nametag on their desk that may change
throughout the year. Students should not draw, color, or put stickers on
their nametags. Any nametag with these marks will be removed and will
not be replaced
o Students will find their “class number” on their nametag. This number is
used for math toolkits and other classroom items.
41. If you do not do your homework
o Students who choose not to complete their homework on a regular basis
will be required to complete the work during their free time (usually
recess). Parents/guardians should let the teacher know if an extenuating
circumstance kept their child from being able to complete their homework.
42. If you find a pencil
o Quietly ask students sitting nearby where the pencil was found if it belongs
to anyone. If not, the pencil should be placed in either the “Sharpened
Pencils” bin or the “Dull Pencils” bin.
43. Using the restroom
o If the light is on in the restroom, a student waiting in line should knock
loudly and ask if anyone is inside. If the student does not hear anyone say
“I’m in here!” they can open the door and use the restroom. Students
should get their business done quickly, flush, and thoroughly wash their
hands with soap and water. Students should also make sure that paper
towels go in the wastebasket only.
44. If the teacher is speaking to someone
o Students should continue to complete their work or wait patiently and
quietly for instruction to resume. Students who must interrupt the teacher
(in case of emergency ONLY) should say, “Excuse me-there is an
emergency!”
8
45. Specials
o All students are expected to behave appropriately during specials. They will
follow the expectations set forth by each special teacher and will receive
specific consequences for poor behavior during specials.

rehearsed at length. Copies of the rules and procedures for each can be
