FRACTION OF A QUANTITY FRACTIONS WITH ONE ON THE NUMERATOR We can find one half of a number by dividing the number by 2, i.e. split the number into 2 equal parts. 1 ππ 24 = 24 ÷ 2 = 12 2 We can find one third of a number by dividing the number by 3, i.e. split the number into 3 equal parts. 1 ππ 15 = 15 ÷ 3 = 5 3 We can find one quarter of a number by dividing the number by 4, i.e. split the number into 4 equal parts. 1 ππ 40 = 40 ÷ 4 = 10 4 We can find one fifth of a number by dividing the number by 5, i.e. split the number into 5 equal parts. 1 ππ 35 = 35 ÷ 5 = 7 5 To find one sixth, divide by 6. To find one seventh, divide by 7. To find one eighth, divide by 8. and so on. FRACTIONS WITH NUMBERS GREATER THAN ONE ON THE NUMERATOR 2 1 To find of a number we first find by dividing the number by 3. 3 3 2 We then multiply the answer by 2 to give . 3 2 ππ 18 = 18 ÷ 3 × 2 = 6 × 2 = 12 3 The rule to find any fraction of a number is: DIVIDE the number by the DENOMINATOR of the fraction then MULTIPLY the answer by the NUMERATOR of the fraction. 4 ππ 45 = 45 ÷ 5 × 4 = 9 × 4 = 36 5 5 ππ 56 = 56 ÷ 8 × 5 = 7 × 5 = 35 8 3 ππ 80 = 80 ÷ 10 × 3 = 8 × 3 = 24 10 Fractions of a Quantity Practice http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/maths/number/fractionsrev1.shtml Learn about fractions and try the testbite.
