Principal’s Message
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Firstly, let me congratulate our graduating Class of 2016! I want to personally thank
you for a great year. This senior class took the lead in providing the pride, dedication and
spirit that Silver Hawks are known for; and they acted as role models for graduating classes
to come. This graduating class received scholarships totaling more than $3 million and had
over 135 Bright Futures Scholarship winners!
We said goodbye to several of our long-time faculty members as the 2015-16 school
year came to a close. Congratulations to Gunnery Sargent James Abbott (ROTC instructor)
and also to Mrs. Maeve Barclay-Pollard (teacher/mentor/SGA/senior class) upon their
retirement! Many thanks to both of you for your years of service and dedication to our
Silver Hawks. You will truly be missed by all.
We also said goodbye to two of our administrators resulting from changes to principals
and assistant principals throughout the district. Dr. Jose Sanchez is heading to Lake
Brantley High, and Dr. Tonya Manderville will join Crooms High administrative staff.
We wish them well. We also want to welcome our two new AP’s, Mr. Michael Howard,
returning to us from Hagerty; and Mrs. Colleen Windt, joining us from Lake Mary High
School. We look forward to working with both.
Lake Howell High School has a rich tradition of academic, athletic, and extracurricular
excellence. I look forward to sharing the 2016-17 school year with you as we embark on many
new and exciting adventures together. Our new state-of-the-art pool facility is scheduled for
completion soon, and we all hope to be enjoying the new pool next school year.
As summer begins, please stay informed through the school’s website and social media
sites. Our new theme for 2016-17 is “Education is the Pathway to the American Dream.
School starts for students on Wednesday, August 10, which is a normal, early-release
Wednesday – students are released at 1:20p.m.
Have a great summer, and Go Hawks!
Sincerely,
Frank L. Casillo

Greeting Silverhawks!
This year on our Open

will be hosting an informational
parent meeting for those of
you who have students in an
intensive reading class (SOAR)
or in a CAR class (Content Area
Reading). SOAR classes will be
using the online reading program:
Reading Plus; and CAR classes
will be using the online reading
program: Achieve3000. We will
have a presentation to familiarize
parents and guardians with
these programs in the Media
Center at 5 p.m., before Open

all parents with students in
reading intervention programs
to attend so we may answer all
of your questions regarding
the programs and explain class

Guidance News
Attention seniors! If you have less than 19 credits by
the start of the 2016-2017 school year, you will be classified
as a junior. This means you will not be able to participate in
senior activities or receive senior privileges, including parking.
Students who have 22.5 credits at the end of 1st semester will be
bumped to senior status at the close of the semester.
Parents: It is extremely important that we have the most upto-date contact information for you in Skyward. Please check to
make sure we have working telephones numbers and addresses
for you and your student. Much of our communication is done
via U.S. mail and phone calls. Current information is especially
important for families of seniors so we can keep you abreast of
your child’s graduation status!
A counselor will be available approximately two days a
week throughout the summer. If you need to contact a counselor,
please call the front desk at 407-746-9050, and they will direct
you to the counselor on duty.

Community Service
Bright Futures requires community service for all levels of the
scholarship awards. (Florida Academic Scholars = 100, Florida Medallion
= 75, Gold Seal = 30). Students now have until May 1 of their senior year to
complete all community service for Bright Futures. Parents, if your student
is interested in receiving a ½ credit for completing community service,
please make sure he/she has submitted the proper form to his/her guidance
counselor for approval PRIOR to beginning to volunteer, and that the agency
is on the district-approved list. All information on this is available on the
school’s website under the “Guidance” link. Once hours have been completed,
students are required to write a reflective essay about their experience, and all
documentation must be turned in to guidance.
Conferences Count
Parent/teacher conferences are a time for parents and teachers to share
information, and are just as important in high school as in earlier years. To
make the most of the time available, be prepared to ask questions like the
following:
• Which subjects appear to be my students weakest and strongest?
• What can I do at home to help?
• What kind of tutoring is available - where and when?
• What standardized tests will my student be taking this year? When? How
can he/she best prepare for them?
Be sure to tell the school about:
• Problems or changes in the student’s life (such as a divorce or death) that
may affect him/her at school
• Any special interests or talents the student possesses
• Any significant changes in the student’s attitude about school or his peers
Test Dates
Lake Howell is an SAT/ACT test site! Please keep the following test

Hedy Chang, Director of Attendance Works
Students who attend school daily are more successful
academically then those who have problems with absenteeism.
A teacher needs your student to be in class daily to provide the
best instruction possible to arm him/her with the tools necessary
for college and later careers! Make sure your child comes to
school every day, to class on time, and completes homework
daily for success! Communicate with your teachers when your
child is absent to ensure all classwork has been made up after
an absence.
HOMECOMING/PROM/Special
Events Incentive
Students wishing to attend Lake Howell High School’s
Homecoming or Prom events must be in good standing in their
ATTENDANCE, DISCIPLINE and FINANCES. Any failure to
meet necessary the required standards may result in the loss of
privilege in attending these events.
Thank you for sending your student to school EVERY DAY!
Summer Reading
Reading daily is critical for your student’s progress toward
passing college readiness tests such as the SAT, ACT, and FSA.
Summer reading is posted on our Lake Howell High School
website for your child’s English courses. Advanced Placement
English and Honors English students have mandatory summer
reading. All other courses have suggested readings for your
child’s progression toward college readiness. Thank you for
encouraging your child to read every day of the year!
