Installation of Club Officers for 2013-2014!
Guests: Frank Cargiuolo, Linda’s lunch date; speaker Oliver Cerberio; Bedford Town Manager Rick Reed
with special guests from Pakistan: Ravia Noor, Shazia Mala and Najia Zira
Membership Milestones: Linda celebrates her birthday on June 10, and Joe Sylva celebrates his
birthday on June 11.
President Pete’s Rotary Moment: President Pete had a moment on Saturday
morning when he realized with a bit of angst that he wasn’t at the Minuteman Arc
March. His Rotary moment came when he thought of Kevin and Britton and Britton’s
wife Beth who were marching that morning and the fact that the reason he couldn’t be
there too was that he was at the Job Lane House work party. Two awesome Rotary
“Do Thing” events. There’s power in numbers! Possibly adding to his moment of
angst was the fact that because he wasn’t marching he missed the chance to have the
fabulous T-shirt sported by Kevin today.
The Minuteman Arc March fielded about 400 marchers!
Nat reported on dinner at the Athenian Corner Restaurant was a great success with 22 people turning
out for a wonderful evening.
Special Olympics: Four Rotarians on the early shift and two Rotarians on the second shift kept the fires
burning and the hamburgers and hot dogs coming last Wednesday at the Special Olympics. We’ve
become a vital part of the food program at this annual event. Even more impressive than our flipping
burgers was the performance of Britton’s son Ben who came in with a silver and a gold medal!

Sign-ups: Three sign-up sheets were circulated today:
• Attendance at the District Conference Paul Harris Luncheon and the Saturday night dinner
• Installation for Concord Rotarian and next District Governor Doug Detweiler on June 6 at
the Nashawtuc Country Club. Cost to attend is $50, but our club will subsidize the cost to
the tune of $35.
• Installation for our club officers for 2013-2014, June 19.
RSVP by next week.
Interact: Diana reported that the Interact Club is taking on a project in to help the street kids in Ecuador;
they’re planning to sponsor two children in the education program we learned about at a talk earlier this
year.
OneFund event on June 2: Christine let us know that Summit Fitness is running a fund-raising event on
June 2 to benefit the OneFund. They’ll be borrowing our grill and collecting items for a silent auction.
Job Lane House work party: A good contingent of Rotarians showed up for
the Job Lane House work party on Saturday morning to help the Friends of the
Job Lane House and the Bedford Garden Club in rebuilding frames for the
herb gardens, repairing the brick sidewalk, laying gravel on the paths, doing
some repairs to the barn, and painting some
barn siding.

Visitors from Pakistan: Town Manager Rick Reed introduced us to three impressive women from
Pakistan who are here on a six week U.S. State Department program which seeks to educate officials from
Pakistan in how government functions in the United States. Our three visitors have spent time in Boston,
Amherst and Bedford and will move on to Washington D.C, and New York. Ravia Noor is Director of the
Women and Child Section in Peshawar; Shazia Mala is Deputy Director
in the Ministry of Production in Karachi, focusing on economic growth;
Najia Zira is Assistant Director in the Office of the Auditor General of
Pakistan in Islamabad; they all spoke of the wonderful experience
they’ve had here in “seeing how democracy is exercised here” and hope
that their visit will work to bridge the gap between our two countries.

Resolute Marine Energy: Olivier Cerberio has been involved in a number of interesting projects, including
helping with a rocket project in Kazakhstan and refurbishing a collapsed facility there; all this on the job
training, getting a degree in Engineering and then an MBA, finally led him to a project using ocean waves
to produce energy for desalinization. The design of this technology is simple, elegant, reproducible, easy to
deploy and maintain - and effective. Large paddles are attached to bases and set on the sea floor about
200 yards from shore. Wave action moves them back and forth, creating the energy which moves water
into the desalinization facility, separating fresh water from brine. A Department of Energy grant funded
research and development; their launch project will be in South Africa and future projects will be in
Cambodia and Senegal.
Raffles and Happy Dollars: Steve won the door prize and Britton tried for the right card after winning the
chance at the 50/50. The good news for us is that the pot’s still there.
In Happy Dollars, Bill was happy that he’d had his first experience with a belly dancer who accepted ones
(was this at the Athenian Corner?); Devon was glad her husband experienced an evening out at the
Athenian Corner and quoted him as saying that Nat can out-party anyone; Devon was also glad that she
completed her first triathlon; Christine was happy that Devon had attended a RYLA training; Nat was glad
for a great time on Thursday and at the Job Lane House work party; Margarita reported that her daughter
announced she didn’t want to go to college (“No Mommy – I’m going Target shopping”); Melinda was glad
for our three Pakistani guests, a great opportunity for us; Bob M. was happy to be here; Steve was glad his
sister is coming from California for their parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, for his birthday next week, and
that tomorrow (Wednesday) is the ServPro event; Susanna was glad for our guests; Victor was
appreciative of the sacrifices at the Job Lane work party – Pete sacrificed his mallet and Andy sacrificed his
thumb; Linda was glad for our guests, including husband Frank; Diana was glad for our guests; Jim noted
that today was the 132nd birthday of his maternal grandfather and the 58th birthday of the club – he was
also happy for our guests and for Kevin’s amazing Technicolor T-shirt; Pete was glad to be here; Ralph
was happy for our guests and hopes they’ll come back as a Rotary vocational training team; Patsy was
happy for our guests, particularly as a woman who owns her own business; Kevin had a Rotary Week
versus a Rotary moment with Special Olympics on Wednesday, the Athenian restaurant on Thursday, the
Job Lane House work party on Saturday morning, a Rotarian encounter with a couple from Nepal on
Saturday night, and RYLA meetings on Sunday. Whew. Joe was happy to announce that there will be a
special benefit for the OneFund at Flatbread on Mother’s Day. Bob C. was glad for our guests and was
happy Rick Reed was here; Mike was glad for our guests and sorry he missed the belly dancer; Art put in
$20. His explanation: “It’s called guilt”.
