St. Margaret Catholic School Viking Vine “We Walk By Faith...Not By Sight” 2 Corinthians 5:7 Principal’s Corner Dear Parents, In 1999 Elie Wiesel was invited to contribute a speech to the Millennium Lecture Series hosted by former President Bill Clinton and his wife. Wiesel was a Holocaust victim and amongst the 40 books he had written was one title, “Night”, a harrowing story of his Holocaust experiences; in 1986 he received the Nobel Peace Prize. The title he chose for his speech was, “The Perils of Indifference”; it contained this paragraph. “Of course, indifference can be tempting – more than that, seductive. It is so much easier to look away from victims. It is so much easier to avoid such rude interruptions to our work, our dreams, our hopes. It is, after all, awkward, troublesome, to be involved in another person’s pain and despair. For the person who is indifferent, his or her neighbor is of no consequence; and, therefore, their lives are meaningless. Their hidden or even visible anguish is of no interest. Indifference reduces the other to an abstraction.” man, Dives, who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously each day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table … The poor man died and was carried by angels to be with Abraham. The rich man died and was buried in Hades.” Luke 16:19 -21. This story of Lazarus and Dives discomforts us as it has every generation since Jesus told it, Dives did not do anything to harm Lazarus nor did he order him to be moved on. Dives did not hurt Lazarus, the community had already done that; simply, the rich man was completely indifferent to the beggar. Martin Luther King, Jr. made the following comment on Jesus’ story: “Dives did not go to hell because he was rich. Dives went to hell because he passed by Lazarus every day and never really saw him. He went to hell because he allowed Lazarus to become invisible.” Jesus’ story tells us that indifference becomes immoral when we ignore or neglect the sufferings of others when we are in a position to help or eliminate the cause of the suffering. Two thousand years before It would seem that we need to be Wiesel’s speech, Jesus told careful that we do not become this story: “There was a rich comfortable as Catholics/ Christians because we have faith, attend Mass and say our prayers. In Matthew’s gospel, Jesus told the story of the “Master” who had to go abroad and gave each of his three servants a sum of money to “look after” while he was away. Upon his return, two of his servants were rewarded for making his money “active” and so increasing it; the third servant was sacked because he simply buried the money so it would be safe. Matthew 25: 14-30. Having faith and looking after ourselves is not enough. We are called to be active in our charity and compassion, to love one another, to take care of one another, to comfort one another. Jesus’ story of Dives and Lazarus is encouraging us not to be indifferent to the needs of others and not to turn our heads and pretend not to see. Jesus, we ask for courage to accept the message of Your story and to start to make it in our lives. Help us to lead our children to frequent acts of kindness and compassion. AMEN. Peace and Blessings, Wendy L. Wicke Things to Remember HALO! Our HALO this week was Sister Mary Elizabeth Ann.
