Say it with Flowers
We are very fortunate to have a regular supply of fresh flowers to the home. Mari, from
Seasons Florists in Wimbledon spent an afternoon with us last month. She came with
her husband Roger and they were shown around the home to get a feel of the place and
to meet the residents. Our display in reception is kindly donated by her, as well as a
weekly mixed bunch of flowers which the residents take great pleasure in arranging
themselves. Thank you Mari! (Seasons Florists, 253 Coombe Lane, West Wimbledon,
Tel 020 8947 6654/Mob 07711 890474).
(
y 2nd March we had the pleasure of Dave coming into the home to entertain us. He
played his guitar and sang for an hour in Hampton lounge and then he went upstairs to
Kew lounge and sang for another hour. It happed to be Patricia’s birthday on that day, so
she had a bit of an impromptu birthday party, which was great.
All the residents, as well as carers and family members, had a wonderful time.

The Queen’s 90th Birthday
On 21st April we celebrated the Queen’s birthday. Jimmy
Moule came and entertained us. He started the afternoon
with a speech from the Queen and he ended the afternoon
with the National Anthem. Everyone was feeling suitably
patriotic and there were flags everywhere. Zach made a
display of red, white and blue cup cakes in the shape of the
Union Jack and the residents made table decorations in the
shape of crowns.

Brown
I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and sky
And all I ask is a tall ship’s and a star to steer her by.
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face and a grey dawn breaking.
I must down to the sea again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied.
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume and the seagulls crying.
MASEFIELD
Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,
Who never to himself has said,
This is my own, my native land!
Whose heart has ne’er within him burned,
As home his footsteps turn’d,
From wandering on a foreign strand!
SCOTT
Oh, is the water sweet and cool,
Gentle and brown, above the pool?
And laughs the immortal river still
Under the mill, under the mill?
Say, is there beauty yet to find?
And certainty? And quiet kind?
Deep meadows yet, for to forget
The lies and truths and pain?...oh! yet
Stands the church clock at ten to three?
And is there honey still for tea?
BROOKE
The Brook
I come from haunts of coot and henn,
I make a sudden sally
And sparkle out among the fern
To bicker down a valley.
Till last by Philip’s farm I flow
To join the brimming river.
For men may come and men may go
But I go on forever.

Round the World Cruise Launch Party –
first port of call, The Philippines
Help the Heroes Cake Sale
The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands. There are majestic mountain
ranges, dense rainforests and lovely beaches lapped by turquoise seas. The name
derives from Philip II – the same fellow who dallied with first Mary Tudor, then
Elizabeth I. Spain occupies the country for centuries. After a long struggle for
independence, the 1st republic was declared in 1899.
In World War II, Japan’s occupation was ended in early 1945 by General Macarthur.
American influence remained strong as communism swept Asia. President Marcos
and his wife Imelda attracted worldwide attention. The Spanish, then American
periods have been dubbed ‘three centuries in the convent and fifty years in
Hollywood’.
The population remains overwhelmingly Roman Catholic. A man who had a benign
influence on politics during periods of unrest rejoiced in the name of Cardinal Sin!

For the Help the Heroes cake sale we did a ‘guess the
name of the bear’. Joseph won £25 and £25 went
towards Help the Heroes. Zach made a fine selection of
cupcakes and chocolate brownies.
