Mari, from Seasons Florists in Wimbledon spent an afternoon with us last month. She came with her husband Roger and they were shown around the home to get a feel of the place and to meet the residents. Our display in reception is kindly donated by her, as well as a weekly mixed bunch of flowers which the residents take great pleasure in arranging themselves. Thank you Mari! (Seasons Florists, 253 Coombe Lane, West Wimbledon, Tel 020 8947 6654/Mob 07711 890474). ( y 2nd March we had the pleasure of Dave coming into the home to entertain us. Medicine label – ‘Avoid alcohol, keep away from children’. Letter to The Times, ‘I would find the first easier if I could manage the second’. The meek shall inherit the earth – if that’s all right with the rest of us. Two people are marooned on a desert island. If they are Americans they form a company, if they are French, an amorous alliance, if they are Italians they have an argument, if they are British they form a queue. Only good girls keep diaries, bad girls don’t have time – Mae West The lion will lie down with the lamb, but the lamb won’t have much sleep – Woody Allen Across the base of a statue of Karl Marx was scrawled ‘Workers of the world, forgive me!’ The rain it raineth every day Upon the just and unjust fellow, But more upon the just because The unjust has the just’s umbrella. Women begin by resisting a man’s advances and end by blocking his retreat – Oscar Wilde A gentleman met a boy on an Irish country road and asked him, ‘What’s your name?’ The boy replied ‘James Docherty’, to which the man said ‘You should say “Sir”. And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail shaking, And a grey mist on the sea’s face and a grey dawn breaking. I must down to the sea again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied. And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume and the seagulls crying. MASEFIELD Breathes there the man, with soul so dead, Who never to himself has said, This is my own, my native land! Whose heart has ne’er within him burned, As home his footsteps turn’d, From wandering on a foreign strand! SCOTT Oh, is the water sweet and cool, Gentle and brown, above the pool? And laughs the immortal river still Under the mill, under the mill? Say, is there beauty yet to find? And certainty? And quiet kind? Deep meadows yet, for to forget The lies and truths and pain?...oh! yet Stands the church clock at ten to three? And is there honey still for tea? BROOKE The Brook I come from haunts of coot and henn, I make a sudden sally And sparkle out among the fern To bicker down a valley. Till last by Philip’s farm I flow To join the brimming river. For men may come and men may go But I go on forever. TENNYSON Find us on social media 12 Round the World Cruise Launch Party – first port of call, The Philippines Help the Heroes Cake Sale The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands. There are majestic mountain ranges, dense rainforests and lovely beaches lapped by turquoise seas. The name derives from Philip II – the same fellow who dallied with first Mary Tudor, then Elizabeth I. Spain occupies the country for centuries. After a long struggle for independence, the 1st republic was declared in 1899. In World War II, Japan’s occupation was ended in early 1945 by General Macarthur. American influence remained strong as communism swept Asia. President Marcos and his wife Imelda attracted worldwide attention. The Spanish, then American periods have been dubbed ‘three centuries in the convent and fifty years in Hollywood’. The population remains overwhelmingly Roman Catholic. A man who had a benign influence on politics during periods of unrest rejoiced in the name of Cardinal Sin! Searched by: Margaret Brown The launch party was a great success and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. There was delicious Filipino food and a lot of effort went into the entertainment.
