What are root words?
• Part of a whole word
• They have meaning but they aren’t a word
on their own
The root tele
• Tele means distance or over a distance
• Think of a word that has ‘tele’ in it?
– Telephone: the telephone let’s you talk with
people over a long distance.
What are other words that
have the root tele?
• Television – the
television let’s you watch
shows over a very long
distance
• Telescope – the
telescope let’s you see
things over a very long
distance
The root rupt
• Rupt means break
• Think of a word that has ‘rupt’ in it?
– Erupt: When the volcano erupts, it’s like the
lava is breaking out.
Other words that have the
root ‘rupt’
• Abrupt – to stop
suddenly. Think of it as
breaking your stride
• Interrupt – to break into
someone’s conversation
