On April 30 I had the privilege of doing
something I have been putting off for 8 months.
I had a great reason to put it off, or so I thought,
I didn’t have a house yet! In our attempts to
move to Calhoun I have purposely neglected to
clean and pack our garage. Just the thought of
it made me sick as I saw the mountains of tools
and other items that was piled around my car.
With the great news that we finally have a house,
hopefully at the end of May, I knew it was time.
Now, up to this point, our spring weather has
been wonderful. The mornings have been cool
and the afternoons warm. Expecting this same
weather I woke up Sunday and went to work, by
about 10 a.m. I realized that I was dealing with
summer weather, not spring!
Not only did I recognize that I had
waited too long to clean my garage, as it
was now hot, I also came to understand
how the laborers in the parable Jesus told of
the workers in the vineyard must have felt.
Remember the story, it goes like this.
“For the kingdom of heaven is like
a landowner who went out early in
the morning to hire laborers for his
vineyard. Now when he had agreed
with the laborers for a denarius a day,
he sent them into his vineyard. And he
went out about the third hour and saw
others standing idle in the marketplace,

and said to them, ‘You also go into
the vineyard, and whatever is right I
will give you.’ So they went. Again he
went out about the sixth and the ninth
hour, and did likewise. And about
the eleventh hour he went out and
found others standing idle, and said to
them, ‘Why have you been standing
here idle all day?’ They said to him,
‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to
them, ‘You also go into the vineyard,
and whatever is right you will receive.’
“So when evening had come, the owner
of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call
the laborers and give them their wages,
beginning with the last to the first.’ And
when those came who were hired about
the eleventh hour, they each received
a denarius. But when the first came,
they supposed that they would receive
more; and they likewise received each a
denarius.” Matthew 20:1-10
I started early in the morning working on my
garage and about 11 o’clock Ava came out and
said, “Daddy can I help you?” I of course said yes
and gave her a bunch of plastic buckets to place
into a box. She worked diligently doing that and
got them all in so that even the top would close.
We taped the box and she went back inside to
play! That evening after finishing up all that I
could do for the day I went inside and there was
Ava. Ava looked at me and said, “Daddy we did

a good job cleaning the garage today didn’t we?”
What could I say? I could have said “What do
you mean we,” or I could have used the line “You
know that box would have only taken me one
minute to pack.” But I didn’t. I knelt down and
gave here and hug and said, “Yep we did a lot
and you were daddy’s big helper.”
You know, when it comes to our salvation
there are so many that have been serving the Lord
and remained faithful so long, and I admire you.
Then there are others who have just started the
journey, and we rejoice over you. The important
thing is not who did what but that we all arrive at
the destination! When Ava came and looked up
at me and said, “We did a good job,” all I could
think about what the great team we had made
and that it was done!
One day things on this earth will be over and
when we get together around the throne of God,
it won’t be to share what all we did, but instead
to celebrate what He did for us! Let’s remember
that as we end this school year and begin a long
awaited summer!
