in the community Volume 9 - Fall 2006 Official Publication of the Minnesota Twins and the Twins Community Fund Twins Community Fund Awards $71,900 in Youth Baseball and Softball Grants The Twins Community Fund awarded $71,900 in youth baseball and softball grants in July. In partnership with The Toro Company and Land O’ Lakes, the Twins Community Fund approved 15 Twins Fields for Kids grants totaling $39,500. The Fund also contributed $20,000 to the Miracle League of Minnesota for the construction of a Miracle Field in Rochester, Minn. The specialized field is built with synthetic turf and serves children with physical and mental disabilities. In 2006, the Community Fund granted a total of $160,000 to the Fields for Kids program, which makes cash contributions to build and improve the condition of youth baseball and softball fields in the Upper Midwest, Southwest Florida and Latin America. Since the program’s inception in 1999, more than $1.2 million has been granted to help renovate 285 ball fields. Also in July, the Twins Community Fund awarded academic scholarships of $1,000 each to 19 Upper Midwest high school seniors via the Diamonds and Dreams Scholarship program. Other approved grants include $3,800 to five organizations to support state and regional youth baseball and softball tournaments; $2,600 to three organizations to support the development of youth baseball and softball programs in their communities; and $1,000 to youth interested in attending a summer baseball or softball camp. The Twins Community Fund also approved grants totaling $6,000 for the expansion of Twins Rookie League and Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities (RBI) youth baseball and softball leagues in Duluth, Minn; Rochester, Minn; and Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is in addition to $110,000 in grants approved in April to help the St. Paul and Minneapolis Parks and Recreation departments operate Rookie League and RBI in their respective communities. More than 8,000 youth participated in Rookie League and RBI programs in 2006. In total, the Community Fund contributed $291,600 in youth baseball and softball grants during 2006. All available funds for 2006 Twins Community Fund grant programs have been awarded. Applications for 2007 grant programs will be available on www.twinsbaseball.com after January 26, 2007. RBI baseball teams from Chicago, Ill.; Kansas City, Mo.; Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.; and Seattle, Wash. participated in the tournament. Tournament games were held at Dunning Field in St. Paul and Parade Stadium in Minneapolis. The teams braved sweltering temperatures to play some great baseball. Minnesota teams advanced to the championship games in both the junior (ages 13-15) and senior (ages 16-18) divisions but lost to Chicago in both games. With the wins, Chicago advanced to the RBI World Series in Compton, Calif. in early August. The Twins RBI girls softball team also participated in the RBI World Series. The team, composed of athletes from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation RBI softball program, received an automatic bid to play in California. “These girls are all part of Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board teams,” said Amy Bassett, MPRB recreation leader. “They don’t play on traveling teams or have many chances to compete at this level, but because of Major League Baseball and The Minneapolis skyline served the Twins Community Fund, as a beautiful backdrop to they had that opportunity.” the 2006 RBI Midwest Region Tournament. The Twins RBI program is operated in partnership with Major League Baseball and the Minneapolis and St. Paul Parks and Recreation departments. The Twins Community Fund donated more than $120,000 in cash support to the Minneapolis and St. Paul Parks and Recreation departments to operate Twins RBI programs in 2006. RBI is a worldwide, Major League Baseball initiative for youth ages 13-18. Founded in 1989, the program is designed to promote baseball and softball in inner cities, while also increasing self-esteem and encouraging academic participation and achievement. The Twins Community Fund honored the 19 recipients of the Diamonds and Dreams Scholarship with an on-field pre-game ceremony on July 1. 2 Twins Community Fund Outreach RBI serves more than 125,000 youth in 175 cities. In Minneapolis and St. Paul, more than 6,000 youth participate in the RBI program. Twins, Killebrew and Subway help build Miracle Field The Minnesota Twins have long held the belief that playing ball is an opportunity every youth should have. That belief is driving the effort to build a third Miracle League ball field for children with physical and mental disabilities. In partnership with Twins great and Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew and Subway® restaurants, the Twins will raise $150,000 to build the “Subway® Restaurants Harmon Killebrew Miracle Field.” Minnesota’s first Miracle Field was built in 2005 in Blaine, Minn., and a second field is currently under construction in Rochester, Minn. The fields are being built with in-kind support, including heavy equipment and labor costs, from the Minnesota Utility Contractors Association. The Miracle League of Minnesota is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide every child with an opportunity to play baseball. For more information, visit www.miracleleaguemn.com. The field will be located in a Twin Cities community and will be constructed with a synthetic turf that accommodates wheelchairs and other walking assistance devices while also helping to prevent injuries. Twins fans were introduced to Miracle League youth athletes during on-field recognition ceremonies prior to select Twins home games. Fans in attendance were encouraged to make personal contributions to help build the new field. The Twins also made a contribution of $5 per ticket sold for the June 11, July 16, July 30, and August 20 Twins home games using a discount coupon obtained from central Minnesota and western Wisconsin Subway® restaurants. In addition, all proceeds from the August 13-14 Killebrew Classic dinner, auction and golf tournament at Legend’s Club in Prior Lake will be used to build the new field. Local Subway® restaurants will also make a cash contribution with funds raised from in-restaurant promotions. Twins Community Fund Outreach 3 Hrbek Bass Fishing Classic Wives’ Volunteer Efforts Current Twins players and coaches joined former Twins greats and other celebrities on Lake Minnetonka June 12 for the annual Twins Bass Fishing Classic, benefiting the Minnesota Chapter of the ALS Association. The 2006 season has been a busy one for the Twins Wives Organization. The group, made up of Twins players’ and coaches’ wives and fiancées, have volunteered their time to support and fundraise for many charitable organizations. The event, hosted by former Twins great Kent Hrbek and presented by Kent Hrbek Outdoors, Ranger Boats, and Carrier, was based at Maynard’s Restaurant on Lake Minnetonka. In May, the wives organized a “Ball in Bag” fundraiser. Brown paper bags, each containing one baseball autographed by a Twins player or coach, were sold prior to a Twins home game. The wives raised nearly $5,000 in one hour, and all proceeds went to ovarian cancer research. Johan Santana, Michael Cuddyer, Brad Radke, and Carlos Silva were just some of the current players casting their lines for ALS. Many former Twins also participated, including Hrbek, Tony Olivia, and Harmon Killebrew. In June, the Twins Wives Organization sold grab bags at the Twins Autograph Party to raise money for the Twins Community Fund. The group also served lunch at People Serving People, and visited patients at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, where they helped decorate cookies. The Twins Wives Organization will wrap up the 2006 season with a visit to Courage Center, a camp for children with disabilities. The group will also sell coupon books to raise money for the Breast Cancer Awareness Association. Tournament host Kent Hrbek joins Brad Radke’s fishing team at the end of the Hrbek Fishing Classic. Twins players and celebrities were paired with professional anglers on each boat. Twins Batting Coach Joe Vavra took home the prize for catching the largest fish. The ALS Association, Minnesota Chapter, is the only Minnesota not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS. Hrbek’s father passed away from ALS in 1982. Since that time, the Hrbek family and the Minnesota Twins have helped to raise millions of dollars for the fight against ALS. Owner’s Initiative The Minnesota Twins once again partnered with the Pohlad Family Foundation to help raise funds for youth-serving charities in the Upper Midwest. This year’s charities - Youth Care, We WIN and Portage for Youth - held fundraisers during Twins home games. The Pohlad Family Foundation provided grants to help each organization cover the expenses of their fundraising event, while the Twins donated more than 1,500 tickets to the groups. The Owner’s Initiative program helped local charities raise more than $116,000 last season. 4 Twins in the Community The Twins Wives Organization visited youth at Courage Center in August. Twins Boat Raffled to Support Special Olympics This summer, fans across Twins Territory had a chance to win a boat while supporting a very special cause. The Minnesota Twins and Special Olympics Minnesota, in partnership with Ranger Boats Powered by Yamaha, raffled a Twins-themed boat to a lucky winner on August 26 during the Special Olympics Minnesota state softball tournament. Raffle tickets were sold prior to Twins home games throughout the summer, with all proceeds benefiting Special Olympics Minnesota. The boat, accented with Twins logos, features the names and numbers of Twins players who have had their number retired. The Yamaha outboard motor also included two engine covers – one autographed by members of the 2006 Twins team. The Twins-themed boat was on display on the Metrodome plaza prior to 2006 home games. “We are pleased to partner with the Twins, Genmar, and Fox Sports Net North on this unique fundraising opportunity,” said Bill Fish, vice president of development for Special Olympics Minnesota. “This one-of-a-kind boat is a terrific way to raise awareness about and money for our important work.” 2007 Minnesota Twins and Twins Community Fund Events February January Sun 7 14 21 28 Mon 1 8 15 22 29 Tue 2 9 16 23 30 Wed Thurs 3 4 10 11 17 18 24 25 31 Fri 5 12 19 26 Sat 6 13 20 27 January 25 - Diamond Awards Gala January 26-28 - TwinsFest 2007 Sun Mon Tue 4 11 18 25 5 12 19 26 6 13 20 27 Wed Thurs 1 7 8 14 15 21 22 28 Fri 2 9 16 23 Sat 3 10 17 24 February 24 - First Spring Training Full Squad Workout April Sun 1 8 15 22 29 Mon 2 9 16 23 30 Tue 3 10 17 24 Wed Thurs 4 5 11 12 18 19 25 26 Fri 6 13 20 27 Sat 7 14 21 28 April 2 - Home Opener: Orioles vs. Twins April 14 - Third Annual Play Ball!
