P. F2-F30
Vocabulary Review
1. The energy an object has because of where it is or its shape is potential
energy.
2. A circuit is made up of a battery, a bulb and wires. It is the path in which
electricity follows.
3. When objects vibrate, they make sounds.
4. The energy of motion is kinetic energy.
5. A source of stored energy called fossil fuel was made over millions of years
as the bodies of dead plants and animals were pressed together.
6. The ability to cause change is energy.
7. Other forms of energy can be used to make electricity, which is the most
common form of energy that we use.
Connecting Concepts
Almost all energy comes from sunlight, which can be stored in food, fuel and
batteries. Food can be used by animals for energy. Fuel can be burned to produce
heat and motion. Batteries can be used to supply electricity to toys and
appliances.
Check Your Understandings
Almost all energy on Earth comes the sun.
Sound waves move slower than light waves.
If two rocks are rolling down the same hill, the larger rock will have more
kinetic energy because it has more mass/weight.
Potential energy is stored energy. Examples of stored energy are: a glass
sitting on a table, a cat sitting in a tree, a stretched rubber band, a book
sitting on a desk, food.
Light waves can move through water.
Critical Thinking
What forms of energy can be found in your home? How does your family use each
of them?
Think about the food you eat. Food gives our bodies energy to move around and
stay warm; fuel like coal, wood, gas or oil, could be used to run the appliances,
heat the house, cook the food; batteries, which we use in our flashlights, alarm
clocks and other devices.
Why do we need to store energy?
So, it will be available when we need it. For instance, at night, when there is no
light or heat from the sun, we need the energy stored in fuel to light and heat our
homes.
Compare food to fuel. How is each formed? What are they used for? Who are
they used by?
Food and fuel are both forms of energy converted from sunlight by plants. Some
forms of fuels are made from animals that have eaten those plants and later died.
Food is used as energy for the body. Fuel is used to produce heat, light, or
motion. All animals use food, but only humans use fuel.
