Your guide to leaving a gift in your Will to Plan International Australia.

The gift
of a
lifetime
Your guide to leaving a gift in your
Will to Plan International Australia.
How your
gift can help
generations
to come.
A Will is so much more than a
legal document. It’s an on-going
expression of your values.
work instead of school, lose their families
because of violence, or who might be left
out just because they are girls.
Your Will is a very special opportunity to
make sure the beliefs and values that you
hold most dear will live on beyond your
lifetime. It’s your chance to give a final gift
that will truly last. But most importantly,
your Will has the power to change
children’s lives in the most profound ways.
However large or small, your bequest will
change lives through basics like regular
meals, a safe place to live, running water
and education. I truly hope you can find a
place in your Will for Plan, so the legacy
of your love and kindness can help the
world’s poorest children.
Children are at the heart of everything we
do. I know you share my belief that every
child has the right to food, clean water,
protection and health. By leaving a gift in
your Will to Plan, you will help children who
would otherwise go hungry, have to go to

WHY BE a
PART OF
OUR PLAN?
Your gift will be in the best
possible hands to help the world’s
poorest children.
When you leave a gift in your Will, you
need to have confidence that your
compassion will still be doing its good
work for many years to come. Plan will be.
Founded more than 70 years ago, Plan
International Australia is one of the oldest
and largest children’s development
organisations in the world and has no
political or religious agenda.
Thanks to generous supporters like you,
we are on the ground in more than 50
developing countries helping communities
to overcome poverty. We actively involve
children in everything we do, and we want
children to know and understand their
rights so they have the skills, education
and confidence to reach their full potential.
You can rest assured that your legacy of
kindness will be safe with us.
“ Now I have time
to play with my
friends, go to
school and sing.”
Thanks to a new water system
funded by generous people like you,
Ludivina now has her childhood back.
Nine-year-old Ludivina and her family live
in a small village in a mountainous region
of Timor-Leste. The closest water
supply was one hour’s walk away along
a dangerous cliff top, and she would
sometimes have to make the exhausting
journey three times a day.
That left her with precious little time to
spend studying or attending English
classes after school – something she loves.
If girls in Timor-Leste drop out of school,
there’s a higher chance they will marry
and have children before they are ready,
trapping them in a cycle of poverty.
But thanks to generous Plan supporters,
a new water tap has been installed near
Ludivina’s family home. “I am very happy
because I don’t have to go far to collect
the water,” she says, beaming with joy.
Nine-year-old Ludivina made an hour-long
walk each morning to fetch clean water.
Sokhat finds schoolwork easier now
after enjoying a healthy breakfast.
“This program
has changed my
life and it helps
my daughter go
to school.”
Helping kids go to school with a full
stomach and full of energy is one
small way that generous supporters
like you are making a difference
through Plan.
On the outskirts of Siem Reap, Cambodia,
13-year-old Sokhat and her mother Khon
live in a hut that shakes when a storm
passes through. Sokhat is Khon’s pride
and joy: “If I had money I would give it to
Sokhat for her to get snacks,” she says,
“but I don’t.”
Thanks to Plan’s School Feeding Project,
which is delivered through a partnership
with the UN World Food Programme, a
large bag of rice and a tin of oil arrives
at their home every two months. Khon
gratefully uses it to cook regular meals,
along with locally grown vegetables.
Not only is Sokhat now eating well at home,
at school she receives breakfast every day
before class too. “After breakfast I feel full.
It’s good. It tastes good too.” For Sokhat
this basic food provided by generous Plan
supporters is the difference between a
childhood spent at school, or one at work.
“You can’t solve
all the world’s
problems. But you
can definitely
solve some.”
Throughout her life, Barbara
has seen first-hand the need for
food, water and education in the
developing countries she’s lived in.
Barbara says, “Food is the most
important thing, especially for children.
You cannot learn on an empty stomach.”
She marvelled at the way Plan was
supporting her own sponsor child’s
family and community in Indonesia:
the bridge built to enable people to get
to markets and a school that would
otherwise not exist.
That’s why she decided to leave a gift
in her Will to Plan.
Barbara has a saying;
“Inch by inch, everything’s a cinch.
Yard by yard, everything’s hard.”
Throughout her life, she’s taken small steps
to help people and improve communities.
Now, through Plan International Australia,
Barbara’s taken one big step to ensure
thousands of children won’t go hungry
when times are tough.
Barbara has chosen to leave a gift
that will feed thousands of children.

A guide to
leaving a gift
in your Will
It’s a big decision, but the process
is easier than you might imagine.
Once you have taken care of your family
and loved ones, you can use your estate
to reflect your values and continue to help
causes that you care about.
A gift to Plan will make the kind of impact
for children that may never have been
possible during your lifetime – and it’s a
fairly straight-forward process.
There are several different types of
bequests, and we suggest you seek the
advice of a solicitor when making your Will.
They will help make sure your Will reflects
your intentions.
A solicitor may talk to you about the
following options:
Residual gift: This gift is the remainder of
your estate, or percentage thereof, after
your loved ones have been provided for
and expenses have been deducted. This
is the type of gift we usually recommend. It
allows you to take care of your family and
still leave a very useful gift to your preferred
charity or charities.
Percentage gift: This gift is used if you
wish to divide your estate among a number
of people or organisations. Leaving your
gift as a percentage rather than a fixed
amount will ensure that inflation doesn’t
erode the value of your gift over time.
And if you have specific requirements,
please get in touch. We’re always ready
to help you with this very important –
and very personal – decision.
SUGGESTED
WORDING of
your will
You can use the suggested
wording to the right, to describe
