The Light - Our Lady of Florida

The Light
Retreat Season 2016-2017
OUR LADY OF FLORIDA SPIRITUAL CENTER
“You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14
Bringing the Light of Christ to a Broken World
RETREAT THEME 2016~2017
Reflecting Christ
“I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me”. That is how
the Apostle, Paul, reflects Jesus in his life and ministry.
And he tells us to do the same: “Be imitators of me, as I
am of Christ.” What a wonderful vocation!
Jesus Christ calls each one of us to himself. Our
response is to be reflections of him and to continue the
work he showed us while he was here on earth.
Again, Saint Paul gives us a window into what our lives
will look like if we strive to be Christ in the world: “For the
fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol.” (Gal. 5:22-23a)
We find opportunities to be about this work of
discipleship in every place, in every person, in every
moment of our lives. It is in the events near to us and
across the globe.
In his Easter Vigil homily (March 2016) Pope Francis
encourages us to be about this baptismal call: “The Lord
is alive and wants to be sought among the living. After
having found him, each person is sent out by him to
announce the Easter message, to awaken and resurrect
hope in hearts burdened by sadness, in those who
struggle to find meaning in life.”
To reflect Christ is to trust in him for the grace and
wisdom to be his human face in today’s world. We are
not called to be perfect. We are called to be our truest
self – announcing God’s good news with the gifts
given to us and in this time we are blessed to live.

The Light
From the Director
Reflecting on my ten years at Our Lady of Florida, I am deeply moved by
your faith and support. Your presence continues to make the Spiritual
Center holy ground.
Reflecting Christ is our theme for this next retreat season. The more I
think about and pray over this theme, I see it coming from our baptismal
commitment and the promises that we made at baptism and on every Easter Sunday.
Being a Catholic Christian is a way of life. Yes, we are in the world, but we should not be
seduced by worldly allurements that take us away from what our goal in life is: to
“become a saint.”
As we know well, Jesus is the proof of God’s love for us. His Passion, Death and
Resurrection are the surest sign of God’s love and presence in our life. It’s easy for us to
forget this. So many people have a hard time accepting God’s love, but once they do, their
lives change and only for the good. Here is a beautiful quote from a great philosopher that
I love to read and to meditate upon:
"You have loved us first, O God – alas, we speak of it as if it were historically just once,
and yet you do it constantly, many times every single day, throughout the whole of life, you
always love us first. When we wake in the morning and turn our thoughts to you – you're
the first, you have loved us first. If I were to rise at daybreak and instantly turn my
thoughts to you in prayer, you are already there ahead of me. You have loved me first.
When out of my distractions I collect my thoughts and think of you, you are there first…
always – and yet we talk ungratefully as if it were only once that you loved us first that
way!” (SØren Kierkegaard)
Once we can accept God’s love, once we know that his heart burns for us, we will see our
mission as one of being another Jesus to all we meet.
As St. Francis says: “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, where there is hatred
let me sow love.
May this year be a year where we reflect Christ by sowing love.
Fr. Paul, C.P.

Retreat Season 2016-2017
Welcome Fr. Melvin Shorter, C.P.
Fr. Melvin grew up in Baltimore Maryland where upon graduating college worked for the Social Security
Administration until he entered the Passionists in 1981. He studied at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and was ordained in 1986.
He has been an itinerant preacher, ministered in Passionist parishes including as pastor in Atlanta, GA. He has served on the Provincial Council as Consultor. He was part of an experimental project in Harlem, New York and later part of the Passionist media ministry.
His most recent ministry was at St. Joseph Parish in Paris, France. St. Joseph’s is the only English-speaking parish in all of France. While in Paris he
served on several commissions including one for the remembrance of 9/11
and an ecumenical group for the many faiths that provided English worship
services. He also enjoyed and valued cooking for the homeless.
Now assigned to Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center he will be joining the
Retreat Team this Fall. He enjoys traveling, reading, films, theater and
cooking.
Welcome Fr. Melvin!

Congratulations!
Fr. Emmanuel Gardon, C.P. & Fr, Damian Towey, C.P.
April of 2016, Our Lady of Florida celebrated the dedication of these two
Passionists with a special Mass and brunch.
Fr. Emmanuel observed his 66th anniversary of ordination while it was
Fr. Damian’s 60th observance.
Each continues his Passionist ministry—Fr. Emmanuel continues as
chaplain for the North Palm Beach fire/rescue/police departments and
Fr. Damian brings his creativity and fine preaching to all.
Both Passionists bring God’s mercy to those to whom they minister. Truly—the Passion of Jesus Christ lives in their hearts.
After 25 years as part of the Retreat Team Fr. Damian is “retiring.”
Fortunately for all of us he will continue to share his
Passionist life and vocation at the Spiritual Center.

Passionist Vocations
Everyone has a vocation ~in the sense that God created each one of us to live this great gift we call “life” in a
meaningful way that will lead to Eternal Life. As we look to the continuation of our Passionist heritage, tradition
and presence at Our Lady of Florida and elsewhere; please join us in a search for new Passionists to accomplish
this great goal and fulfill this hope. We invite you to help in several ways:
1. Please join us in prayer every day, asking God for an increase in vocations to the church and religious life,
especially the Passionists.
2. Look around your families and encourage the single men, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren
to consider the Passionist religious life.
3. Search your parishes and neighborhoods and encourage promising single Catholic men, whether in their
teens, twenties, or thirties to ask Jesus if He is inviting them to life as a brother, deacon, or priest
(especially the Passionists.)
4. If you see and recognize something in a young person, follow up with them and acknowledge
the gift of a religious vocation the Lord may have placed in their hearts. Perhaps that one
acknowledgement is the seed God will nurture and help to flourish and grow into a religious
vocation.
Let us pray: St. Paul of the Cross continue to pray and intercede for us and guide future members to the Passionist way of life.
For more information speak with any of the Passionists at the Spiritual Center or contact Vocation Director, Fr. Lee Havey, C.P. at
[email protected]
Remembering Loved Ones
There are many ways we may honor loved ones living or
deceased. At the Spiritual Center many stop by to have
a Mass said and send a Mass card of support. (see page
10 for more information)
Another long standing tradition has been placing a name
plaque on the Memorial Donor Boards just outside of
the Chapel.
Looking over the names on current Memorial Donor Boards
are: Bea Asher, Fr. Patrick Daugherty, C.P. and Barbara
Quattro
With the recent arrival of a new board, the opportunity
for you to take part in this way of remembrance
is very easy.
Stop by the Spiritual Center administration office during business hours and complete the simple form.
The donation for each plaque insert is: $300.00.

Annual “Spiritus Dei Gala” in the beautiful
Lost Tree Club in 2017.
It is never too early to mark your calendars

making plans for the next event. Lost Tree

Meet Lori & Linn!
Neither Lori Diedrich or Linn Brown are new to Our Lady
of Florida. Each working part time and in Linn’s case,
also some volunteer time, they provide full time
presence in the administration office during business
hours.
Lori reflects: Working for Our Lady of Florida for the
past 6 years has been a Blessing. I’ve taken advantage
of the Priests’ knowledge, wisdom and holiness in the
raising of my three children in an ever changing world.
Linn also considers: It is an honor and blessing to work
with the Passionist Community and staff at Our Lady of
Florida. I have met so many wonderful people since I
began volunteering and working here.
Each has her particular area of responsibilities and
some tasks they share, but be sure of one thing: they
are happy to welcome you (by phone or in person) to
the Spiritual Center.
Business hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00am to
5:00pm. We close for lunch at 12:00pm for half an hour.
During the Summer months the office closes at 3:00pm.
