I. You will need to read How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C.
Foster. You will need to read this before the other novel. We will refer to the
various chapters throughout the semester.
II. Read Lord of the Flies by William Golding. There will be critical analysis
questions to answer for each chapter. Each question should be answered fully in
an approximately half-page paragraph.
The reading and critical analysis assignment will be due at Open House on
August 5, not in January. I repeat, THIS ASSIGNMENT IS DUE ON AUGUST 5 AT
OPEN HOUSE! Each day it is late will be 10 points off the assignment grade.
This assignment will be your first test grade in the gradebook, and tests count
25 percent of your grade. In other words, TURN IT IN COMPLETED ON AUGUST

Chapter 1
List specific words and phrases from the novel to describe Ralph, Jack, and Roger.
Chapter 2
What do the varying views of the beastie foreshadow?
Chapter 3
Re-read the first paragraph of the chapter. Why do you think Golding describes
Jack as he does?
Chapter 4
Use chapter 2 of How to Read Literature Like a Professor to analyze the
significance of Simon’s decision to share his meat with Piggy.
Chapter 5
Describe and analyze each boy’s stance on fear. Be specific and include page
numbers. Ralph, Simon, Piggy, and Jack
Chapter 6
Use chapter 21 of HTRLLP to analyze how Simon is “marked for greatness.” (You
may use other LOTF chapters to answer)
Chapter 7
Use chapter 11 of HTRLLP and analyze the violence in this chapter.
Chapter 8
Use chapter 11 of HTRLLP and analyze the violence in this chapter. Comment on
the boys’ innocence.
Chapter 9
Use chapter 14 of HTRLLP to determine who the Christ figure of the novel is and
explain your reasoning using specific examples from the text.
Chapter 10
Use chapter 12 of HTRLLP to determine a symbol found in this chapter. Analyze
its significance in relation to the vision motif found throughout the novel.
Chapter 11
Investigate Roger’s actions in this chapter. In your analysis, consider how he has
changed over the course of the novel.
Chapter 12
When Ralph encounters the Lord of the Flies, he knows that it is significant in
some way, but he can’t understand. How IS it significant?
