BYU Course Outcomes

2. Know how to speak publicly so your audience will really listen
and understand.
3. Construct and deliver effective extemporaneous public speeches.
4. Manage speech anxiety and effective use nonverbal communication to inform, persuade, enlighten, and impact your audience.
5. Be able to produce and employ effective visual aids in your
presentations.
Course Objectives
After you have successfully completed this course, you should be able to
do the following:
1. Select an appropriate topic, research it effectively, and organize
and write a quality speech.
2. Present a speech with self-confidence and connect with your audience. Whether your audience is one or one hundred, it is important
to know your audience and know it might have diversity.

3. Communicate more effectively with improved speaking, listening,
and critical thinking skills.
4. Know and understand the guidelines for ethical speaking.
Required Materials
All speeches must be recorded. Submit your recording(s) electronically
to Independent Study.
I can open and will accept the following file formats, mp3, wav, wma,
m4a, voc, mov, wmv, ogg and amr files. File size should be 10MB or less;
but often up to 20 MB will come through. Be sure you put your name on
your files so I know they belong to you. If you need to submit multiple
attachments in BrainHoney you can use a zip file or you can paste the
outline/manuscript in the notes. If you have any difficulty in sending your
audio files due to size, you are welcome to use third party sites, like http://
transferbigfiles.com, http://www.drop.io.com, https://www.yousendit.
com/, YouTube or others. If you choose to use a third party for files, be
sure you put your name on your files so I know they belong to you. Just
place the link in the notes or attach it in a doc in BrainHoney. If you have
further questions, please let me know.
Course Structure
Each lesson will include information that will assist you in becoming a
better communicator— whether it’s speaking in public, teaching a class,
leading a discussion, enhancing personal relationships, or improving
listening skills.

Lesson 1 discusses the problem of fear in public speaking and
suggests ways to overcome that fear.
Lesson 2 explains how to analyze and connect with diverse
audiences.
In lesson 3 you will read some very important information on
ethics and speech delivery. You will become familiar with your
voice by recording your favorite poem and a speech by Mark Twain
into your tape recorder.
In lesson 4 you will select a topic for a speech, gather material,
organize the body of the speech, add a beginning and ending to the
speech, and outline the speech. You will record a self-introductory
speech.

Lesson 5 discusses the use of language. You will rewrite your
self-introductory speech and record it again with your changes.
Lesson 6 teaches the speech style for informational speaking. You
will write and record an informative speech.
Lesson 7 is on persuading with passion—learning the methods and
tools of persuasion. You will write and record a persuasive speech.
Lesson 8 is on argumentation, critical thinking, and ethics. You
will write and record an argumentative speech.
Lesson 9 teaches speaking for special occasions. For the final
assignment for this course you will write and record an afterdinner or tribute speech.
Assessment and Grading
Submitting Your Assignments
It’s very important that you submit all of the assignments for a portfolio
at the same time. Here’s how to submit your completed assignments:
1. Click the Instructor-Graded Assignment Submission link
in your course.
2. Click Open.
3. Attach all of the relevant assignments by clicking the Choose
File button, then locating the file you wish to submit.
4. To attach additional files, click Add Attachment and use the
Choose File button to locate and upload the next file. Make
sure you attach every file you need to include in the portfolio
assignment.
5. When you are finished, click Submit.
6. You will be asked if you are sure you want to submit this assignment. Click Yes.
7. You will receive a message that tells you that you have successfully
submitted your assignment. Click OK.
Remember: Do not submit any assignment until you have completed
all of the assignments for the portfolio!

Grading Criteria
After listening to your speeches and reviewing your written work, I will
assign a grade according to the evaluation forms included at the end of
each lesson. Each speech will be given a numerical score and will include
personal feedback. Lesson 9 is the final speech and is worth fifteen percent of your grade.

Grading will be on a straight percentage scale as follows:

Your assignments will be given the following weights when calculating your grade:
