 A paradoxical statement seems contradictory, yet it has

an element of truth.
Examples:
A rich man is no richer than a poor man
It is a shame that youth must be wasted on the young
He is a wise fool (oxymoron since it is side by side)
As we read Sting’s lyrics from “They Dance Alone,”
look for examples of paradox & be ready to explain
them.

 Naming (use specific names for people, places, and things)
 Detailing (color, shape, size, and texture)
 Comparing (simile or metaphor)
 Examples:
 He drove the car on the road.
 Ted drove the Mustang on Highway Six.
 Speedy Ted raced the red Mustang down tattered Highway
Six.
 Like a flash of lightening, Ted raced the red Mustang down

 He went to the store
