Brait SE: On Tuesday morning, BAT released its results for the year ended 31 March
2017. At the end of the period, the group’s net asset value per share stood at R78.15,
5.2% lower than the R82.45 reported at the end of December 2016. However, the last
stated net asset value per share figure represents a decline of 42.6% compared to the
R136.27 per share recorded a year ago. This sharp drop was partly attributed to a
20.5% strengthening of the rand against the pound. Furthermore, BAT has also decided
to cut the carrying value of its investment in New Look by 80% to R7.1bn, down from
the R34.87bn recorded in the previous corresponding period. As a result, New Look’s
contribution to Brait’s net asset value per share slumped to 15%, down from 45% a year
ago. Virgin Active now features as the group’s largest investment at R15.5bn, while the
value of Premier and Iceland Foods increased marginally to R12.4bn and R7.4bn
respectively. Lastly, the board has declared a cash dividend of 79.15 cents per share as
well as a bonus share issue.
Yesterday saw the JSE end only marginally higher, despite local markets getting off to a
promising start. At the close, the All Share index had added 0.12% to settle at
51,625.10 index points, outperforming a 0.21% increase in the Top 40 index. The
industrial index featured among the session’s top performers and was up 0.39%,
boosted by a 0.7% rebound in Naspers and a 2.09% increase in Richemont. The gold
mining index led the decliners, forfeiting 2.28%, while the resources index shed 0.41%
following a slump in commodity prices. Lastly, Brait endured a choppy session after
releasing its results, with the group ending 4.55% lower.
Stor-Age Property: Yesterday also saw SSS release its results for the year ended 31
March 2017. Firstly, the board declared a final dividend of 45.01 cents per share. As a
result, the total dividend for the year came in at 88.05 cents, up from the 4.5-month
dividend of 30.07 cents reported a year ago. During the year, SSS’s rental income
increased to R158.1m, while total occupancy grew by 37,700m2. Furthermore, the
group managed to grow its like-for-like rental rate by 9.4% throughout the period. At the
31st of March 2017, the value of the group’s properties stood at R2.05bn, sharply higher
than the R1.371bn recorded a year ago. However, it must be noted that this includes
the effect of the Storage RSA acquisition, which contributed R477m to the valuation. As
a result, SSS’s net asset value per share came in at R10.68, up from R9.90 previously,
while its tangible net asset value per share increased by 9.7% to R10.21.

European Market Headlines
Asian Market Headlines
European markets staged a recovery during the previous session, with Italian banking
shares featuring among the region’s top performers. Overall, the Stoxx 600 index
gained 0.55% to close at 388.75 index points, supported by a 0.59% increase in the
German DAX and a 0.4% uptick in the French CAC 40. In contrast, the FTSE 100 shed
0.15% to close at just above the 7,500 index point level. Italian banking shares added
1.1%, helped along by renewed hopes of a rescue for struggling Veneto banks. Lastly,
technology shares also provided a boost to the region, with a number of companies
rebounding from Monday’s sharp declines.
Asian markets were trading in a mixed fashion this morning, despite last night’s surge in
US markets. Mainland markets led the region’s declines, with the Shanghai Composite
losing 0.58% to trade at 3,135.32 index points, followed by a 0.28% drop in the Hang
Seng. In contrast, the Australian ASX performed remarkably well, with the index surging
0.98% to trade at 5,858.50 index points – on track to end in positive territory for the
fourth consecutive session. Lastly, the Japanese Nikkei was also trading marginally
higher, gaining 0.2%, with the index set to erase yesterday’s 0.05% decline.

Tuesday saw oil prices recover some of its recent losses, helped along by a report from
OPEC that detailed supply cuts from around the world. As a result, Brent crude added
$0.43 to close at $48.72 per barrel. However, the industrial commodity offset most of
those gains this morning, with Brent dropping $0.39, or 0.8%, to trade at $48.33 per
barrel. This decline was partly attributed to data that showed a build in US crude stocks.
In contrast, spot gold added 0.25% to trade at $1,269.73/oz this morning, with investors
waiting for the outcome of the US Federal Reserve’s meeting to see whether it will
increase interest rates or not.
The rand was mostly unchanged on Tuesday, albeit slightly stronger, as investors
waited on the sidelines ahead of the outcome of the US Federal Reserve's latest policy
meeting later today. After a previous close of R12.79/$ on Monday, the rand performed
well as the session progressed, with the local currency moving to trade at R12.781/$ at
17:00. Lastly, the rand continued to strengthen overnight to reach a high of R12.751/$ at
19:30, but then weakened slightly to trade at just above the R12.77/$ level this morning.
