PORT AUGUSTA (approx. population 13,260) At the head of Spencer Gulf, the town was first settled in 1852 and named after the Governor’s wife (Lady Augusta Young). The huge power station, fuelled by brown coal from the open cut mines at Leigh Creek, supply much of the State’s power requirements. The Wadlata Outback Centre houses an accredited Visitor Information Centre and through its many displays, interprets all facets of the Flinders Ranges and Outback. WOOMERA (approx. population 300) Established in 1947 to support Anglo-Australian rocket-launching operations, Woomera was a restricted township until 1982. Following its heyday in the rocket industry Woomera became a support centre for the nearby US-Australian Nurrungar Joint Defence Facility, which closed in 1999. The Woomera Range is still occasionally used for rocket and munitions testing. The Missile Park and Heritage Centre dramatically reveal Woomera’s history.
