These maps are not drawn to scale.
Strip Map Features:
Cumulative Distances
These are provided for both directions of travel and can be matched to the car’s odometers for a ready
reference.
,VMHFSB
Intermediate Distances
These distances provide for some localised perspective of scale.

driving at night. For maximum
safety restrict driving to daylight

PORT AUGUSTA
(approx. population 13,260)
At the head of Spencer Gulf, the town
was first settled in 1852 and named
after the Governor’s wife (Lady
Augusta Young). The huge power
station, fuelled by brown coal from
the open cut mines at Leigh Creek,
supply much of the State’s power
requirements. The Wadlata Outback
Centre houses an accredited Visitor
Information Centre and through its
many displays, interprets all facets of
the Flinders Ranges and Outback.
WOOMERA
(approx. population 300)
Established in 1947 to support
Anglo-Australian rocket-launching
operations, Woomera was a
restricted township until 1982.
Following its heyday in the rocket
industry Woomera became a support
centre for the nearby US-Australian
Nurrungar Joint Defence Facility,
which closed in 1999. The Woomera
Range is still occasionally used for
rocket and munitions testing. The
Missile Park and Heritage Centre
dramatically reveal Woomera’s
history.
GLENDAMBO
Established in 1982 when the Stuart
Highway was realigned, to provide

available at Kingoonya on the old

COOBER PEDY
(approx. population 1,470)
An Aboriginal name meaning “white
fellow’s hole in the ground”, Coober
Pedy is the administrative centre for
one of Australia’s most productive
opal fields. Opal has been mined here
since 1916 and in that time millions
of dollars worth of precious stones
have been taken from the ground.
Many of the houses in Coober Pedy
are built underground to combat the
intense heat of summer. Tourists are
advised to exercise caution around
the hundreds of unprotected mine
shafts in the area.
