Welcome Back Esperanza Stars!
Volume 1, Issue 1
August 2016
Welcome Back! We are excited to see the smiling faces of our students, parents and community members. We hope
everyone had an amazing summer and are refreshed and ready for the 2016-2017 school year! This summer was
spent planning on how to make 2016-2017 the best school year ever! The Esperanza team identified the following
areas of focus to ensure on-going growth for your child's success attendance, academics and social emotional
development. In order to help your child succeed we need to be able to teach them. As a result, we have set a 97%+
Attendance Goal. You can help us reach our 97% + Attendance Goal by ensuring your child doesn't miss more than
5 days each school year. To improve academics, the Esperanza staff created a Read to Succeed Campaign and
Math Madness Campaign to inspire children to continue their learning beyond the school walls. Please keep an eye
out for reading logs and fun activities that are coming your way! Today's success requires citizens to communicate
and work together at higher levels than ever before. In order to ensure our children are prepared for such a
workforce, teachers are incorporating daily social emotional learning experiences. Parents are always welcome to
visit our school to observe learning. We are also always looking for volunteers. If you would like to volunteer, please
see Monique and Cathy in the office.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kristen Robertson
Make Every Day Count!
Research shows:
Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade
are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd
grade.
By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning
sign for students at risk for dropping out of school.
By 9th grade good attendance can predict graduation rates
even better than 8th grade test scores.
Going to school regularly matters!
We don’t want your child to fall behind in school and get
discouraged. Please ensure that your child attends school every
day and arrives on time. Here are a few practical tips to help
support regular school attendance.
Make sure your child keeps a regular bedtime. A sevenyear-old needs 9 to 11 hours of sleep per night.
Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
Ensure your children go to school every day unless truly
sick.
Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when
school is in session.

Back to School in 3 easy Steps!
It’s never easy transitioning back to school after summer
break. Whether your child is new to the school
experience or has already been in school, here are some
steps you can follow to help you transition back into the
routine.
1. Acknowledge the stress or anxiety your child
may feel about school. Is your child worried
about making friends or learning to read? It’s
normal to feel a little apprehensive in the
beginning! Share stories about how you dealt
with similar situations when you were in
school, and discuss possible solutions together.
2. Attend PTO meetings, become a volunteer, tour
the school with your child… in other words, get
involved!
Contact Susan Zavala for information on parenting
classes and opportunities!
3.
Empower your child by discussing actions he or
she can take if a problem arises. Ask, "What
worries you most about school?" Listen and then
ask, "If that happens, what will you do?" Help
your child think of constructive ways to deal with
a difficult situation.
School Safety
We are lucky our children have parents/guardians who
are able to pick them up every day. One of the
challenges that many of you have noticed is that our
parking lots and 31st Ave have become quite busy at
dismissal time. Please make sure to keep the drop off
lanes clear to allow traffic to flow smoothly.
