s you look through the pages of our latest Insights magazine, you’ll notice that this
is a very special issue, with many stories focused on generous gifts bestowed to
The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center. Next to our staff and doctors, we
simply wouldn’t be able to do what we do to keep people healthy without the generous
philanthropic support of so many individuals and organizations within our community.
Whether it’s supporting our future Healing Garden, new 3-D mammography
technology, or the up-and-coming lung nodule clinic, gifts, both small and large,
make an incredibly meaningful impact on the overall health of our region. I, for one,
continue to be both proud and humbled by the amount of people who choose to
entrust their donations to The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center, and
ultimately the more than 400,000 people whom we serve.

THE FOUNDATION FOR MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER
Estate gift supports a healthy community
through development of Lung Nodule Clinic
A
lthough Lloyd and Dottie Huck are no longer here on earth, their
passion for helping others and their giving natures live on.
If you’ve lived or worked in the community for any significant amount
of time, you likely recognize the Huck name. From student scholarships
at The Pennsylvania State University, to endowments in areas of
science and nutrition, to the development of the Huck Institutes of
the Life Sciences, Dottie and Lloyd’s devotion to education was clear.
What’s also clear is that the Hucks had a strong loyalty to healthcare,
bestowing financial support for numerous projects to Mount Nittany
Health, including support for rural cancer outreach during the
Commitment to Distinction Campaign.
Their choices for philanthropic support are hardly surprising, as both
the Hucks graduated from Penn State in 1943—Lloyd from the Eberly
College of Science, and Dottie from the College of Health and Human
Development.
Upon graduation, Lloyd began his career as a research chemist at
Hoffmann-LaRoche. He then joined Merck & Co. as director of
marketing in 1958 and retired as chair of the board in 1986. From
there, Lloyd went on to serve as CEO at Nova Pharmaceutical
Corporation where he retired in 1991 as chair of the board.
Dottie, who had majored in dietetics, found her calling as a
volunteer in the community. Whether serving the American Red
Cross or volunteering in local healthcare facilities, Dottie had a
keen interest in health and wellness. Upon officially moving
to the State College area more than a decade ago, Dottie
also volunteered at Mount Nittany Medical Center in a
variety of roles.
After enjoying a full life—including the blessing of three children,
five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild—Lloyd passed away in
December 2012 at the age of 90, and Dottie passed away shortly after in
August 2014 at the age of 91. With their passing, the Hucks generously
designated $1 million toward improving the health of the community,
entrusted to The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Although Jeanne says that her family wasn’t directly impacted by lung
cancer, improving the health of those in the community was important
to her parents.
earlier stage. Therefore, there was
also a significant reduction in
deaths from lung cancer.
John Cox, MD, pulmonary medicine, Mount Nittany Physician Group,
explains that there are two main components to the Lung Nodule Clinic.
“Mom and Dad were humble, generous people. They didn’t always tell
us kids all of the gifts they were giving. I’m learning more and more
about them even after they’re gone,” said Jeanne Leslie-Hughes, middle
child.
First, patients with incidental findings will make up the majority of
clinic visits. If, for example, a patient is being seen for chest pain, and
he or she is found to have a questionable spot on the lung during an
imaging scan, he or she may be referred to the Lung Nodule Clinic.
Now, these screening are being
endorsed by many insurance
companies and are being offered
at a select number of medical
centers.
One of the most impactful services that the Hucks’ estate gift is
funding is the development of the Mount Nittany Health Lung Nodule
Clinic.
“The goal is to identify patients who have an incidental finding so they
can be properly evaluated and referred for further imaging studies if
necessary,” said Dr. Cox. “Additionally, there will be patients whose
lung nodules are not indicative of lung cancer and are essentially
harmless, so we can help to quell that fear.”
According to the American Lung
Association, lung cancer is the leading
cancer killer in men and women
in the United States, and an
estimated 158,040 people will
die from lung cancer this year
in America. Unfortunately,
though, detecting lung cancer
can be complicated.
The second component of the Lung Nodule Clinic is a bit more in-depth.
“Screening for lung cancer is difficult. There’s no blood test available,
so a number of years ago, routine chest X-rays were looked at as a
screening. It was determined that X-ray screenings did not improve
patients’ mortality rates, though, because by the time lung cancer is big
enough to be seen on an X-ray, it has likely spread to other areas of the
body,” Dr. Cox explained.
High-risk patients are likely
between the ages of 55 and
80, with more than a 30-pack
year smoking history. A pack
year is defined as more than 20
cigarettes smoked every day for
one year.
Above: John Cox, MD,
pulmonary medicine,
Mount Nittany Physician Group
“We hope that this program will
help to appropriately identify those who may be at risk for lung cancer
at an earlier, more treatable stage. We also hope that it will alleviate
fears for those that have a questionable spot on an imaging study if
nothing is actually wrong,” said Dr. Cox.
The Mount Nittany Health Lung Nodule Clinic is set to open later this
year.
So, medical researchers then began looking at the CT scan as a possible
way to screen for lung cancer. High-risk patients were given a lower
dose CT scan, and it was found that there was a significant increase
in the number of patients whose lung cancer was identified at an

Gifts of impact and inspiration: donations

3-D mammography
T
he Mount Nittany Health
Breast Care Center will soon
become equipped with 3-D
mammography, called digital
tomosynthesis (pronounced tohmoh-sin-thah-sis), thanks to two
very generous gifts.
Tomosynthesis, or 3-D
mammography, takes multiple
X-ray images of the breast at
different angles, creating a threedimensional image that results in
better visibility, earlier detection
of breast cancers, and reduced
follow-up diagnostic testing.
“Studies are showing that
tomosynthesis improves earlier
detection of invasive breast
cancers,” said Allison Yingling,
MD, radiology, Mount Nittany
Health Breast Care Center.
“In a traditional screening
mammogram, sometimes women
are called back for additional
views, but this technology helps
us cut down on those callbacks because the mammogram
includes pictures of the breast at
multiple angles.”
from the disease after 39 years
of marriage. So, when Allen was
determining where his estate
gifts would be donated, The
Foundation for Mount Nittany
Medical Center made the top of
the list.
The plan is to install two
tomosynthesis units at the
Breast Care Center later this
summer. Specifically, these units
will benefit women with dense
breasts. When women have
high breast density, traditional
mammograms can be harder to
interpret, which may complicate
the early detection of breast
cancer. Tomosynthesis allows the
providers to see more detailed
views of the breast.
“I know much thought was
given by Allen as to where his
estate gifts were going,” said his
companion, Thelma Stratton,
when Allen passed last year. “It
speaks volumes to me that he
would have placed such a trust
in The Foundation for Mount
Nittany Medical Center. He was
very methodical about where his
estate would go, wanting the gifts
to go where he felt they would be
used wisely.”

Healing Garden
“W
e like to joke and say that
we gave the ‘seed money’
for the garden,” said Nancy Dixon
with a smile, speaking about the
generous gift she and her husband,
Dick Dixon, earmarked for the new
Healing Garden at Mount Nittany
Medical Center.
By the end of this year, a lush,
intricate garden will be in bloom
adjacent to the Medical Center’s
main lobby. With various trees,
shrubs, grasses, flowers, and vines,
this space will appeal to all the
senses and act as a healing feature
for the region.
“When we were discussing how
we wanted our gift to be used,
we knew that we didn’t want
to fund just bricks and mortar.
Someone had suggested the
Healing Garden, and both Dick
and I had that ah-ha moment,”
six
said Nancy, who enjoys flower
gardening while her husband
enjoys vegetable gardening.
Dick, who is a retired oncologist,
was drawn to the idea of a
Healing Garden because during
his last few years of practice,
medicine was becoming more
comprehensive, moving toward
a focus on treating the whole
patient.
“Studies have shown that patients
who are in a positive, healing
environment—a place that is
more relaxed and content—seem
to do better in their treatment,”
he said.
But the space isn’t only a calming
sanctuary for patients. The
Healing Garden is meant to be
a place of refuge and respite for
families, doctors, staff, volunteers,
and community members alike.
Dick says that if he were still
practicing today, he would
certainly find himself using the
garden to rest and reflect after
emotionally draining days.
And Dick and Nancy are not the
only ones who have been inspired
by the idea of a Healing Garden.
To date, more than $725,000
has been raised for the garden,
funded entirely by Mount Nittany
Health staff and doctors, and from
community support, such as the
proceeds from last year’s Mount
Nittany Medical Center Golf
Classic, and the 2015 Charity Ball.
Extensive community
collaboration has been necessary
for the garden as well, with input
and involvement from Penn
State Master Gardeners, Scott’s
Landscaping, and local landscape
architect, Derek Kalp.
When the garden is finished,
people can expect a breath of fresh
air as they walk down the garden’s
sidewalks, sit in the plaza area
bordered by magnolia and cypress
trees, or listen to the calming
trickle of water from the fountain.
Many patients in the hospital will
be able to enjoy the views of the
garden from their windows, too, as
they look down upon lawn areas
that have been precisely designed
in the shape of leaves.
“We never realized the community
support for this project would be
so great,” said Dick. “But I think
people like the idea that they can
see their gift in action, and they
can participate in their gift. That’s
truly special.”

MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER CHAPEL
COMMUNITY HEALTH
New chapel designed to evoke peace,
comfort, and inspiration for all
“Nature is soothing to almost everybody, and that realization inspired
our use of nature imagery,” she said. “There’s natural light, a view of
the garden and the sky, and we’ve incorporated three beautiful, natureinspired pieces of stained glass.”
The stained glass gives the intimate space both a traditional and
contemporary feel. With its variety of textures and colors, the customdesigned glass depicts birds, trees, water, and other natural elements.
It seems fitting that in a place that cares for people from birth to death,
in moments of joy and sorrow, there also be a place where one can
simply let go and feel at ease.
“Every day, lives change here at our hospital. This is a place to give
thanks for new life, to pray for healing, to shed a tear, to rest, breathe in
peace, and find hope renewed,” said Peggy.

The new Mount Nittany Medical Center chapel, which is slated to open

inspiration for people of all religions, or none at all.
The sacred space adjoins the Medical Center’s main lobby and

volunteers, and doctors alike are encouraged to rest, reflect, and pray
here, in an atmosphere that is both calming and uplifting, lively and

Having worked for hospitals,
universities, churches, and even
as one of the artists for the White
House during Christmas, David
was excited to undertake this task.
“Nature is absolutely calming,”
said David, who has been
interested in bringing nature into
sacred spaces for quite some time.
“I really like making beautiful
things for everyday spaces.”
For David, the design process
is about bringing the new into
the old.
“It’s for everyone,” said The Rev.
Dr. Peggy Lindsey, chaplain,
Mount Nittany Medical Center.
“The space has been designed so
that everyone can feel welcome,
comforted, and connected. We
hope it will meet the needs of
many different people.”

David Lee Csicsko has been an
artist for more than 30 years.
Living and working in Chicago,
David was commissioned to
design the three large stained
glass windows and a smaller
mosaic for the Mount Nittany
Medical Center chapel.
With striking use of color, bold
patterns, and intricate detail,
David designed a set of panels
that not only complement the
chapel’s design, but can also take
your breath away.
Open all hours of the day and
night, the chapel is a small
enough space for personal
reflection, but it can also
accommodate small gatherings.
The chapel design process has
been a joy for Peggy, who has
been a chaplain for 30 years in a
variety of medical settings. She
says that over the years, she’s seen
so many people find a spiritual
connection to nature; having
the chapel overlook the Healing
Garden just makes sense.

“Even though stained glass is a
time-honored, ancient craft, I look
for ways to make it feel new and
contemporary. I want my windows

people right here, right now.”

For the chapel project specifically,
keeping the design fresh and

David, since nature played such
an important role.

“If I don’t feel well or I’m upset,
a walk outside or just looking
at trees can calm me down.
The beautiful greenery gives an
incredible feeling of hope and
serenity,” he said, also describing
that his design process typically
begins with pencil sketches
before moving to computerassisted drafts.
After David is satisfied with
the design, he meets with glass
craftsman David Condon (of
Colorsmith Stained Glass
Studio)—a man he’s worked with
for 15 years—and selects colors,
textures, and add-ins. A similar
process occurs with the artist who
is making the mosaic, Erin Adams
(of Erin Adams Design).
“I enjoy using recycled pieces in
my designs when possible. Often
I’ll go into a thrift shop and buy
crystal platters so parts of them
can be used in the glass or mosaic.
I also like to use sliced agates
(quartz) because it was made by
nature. I love the combination of
bringing natural elements into the
glass,” said David.
And even years from now, both
David and Peggy hope that a
sense of peace and restoration
is felt when the sunlight dances
along the glass.

DONATE LIFE
Local man awaits kidney donation for
second chance at life
I
f you sat down to talk with David Wolfe, you’d likely never know
he’s been waiting for a kidney donation for two years.
day I began dialysis, and less than two months later I was on the
transplant list.”
David, an environmental services aide with Mount Nittany Medical
Center for more than 22 years, has been on the kidney transplant list
since July 2013.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, there are currently
124,000 people waiting for lifesaving organ transplants in the
United States. Of this number, more than 100,000 people are
specifically awaiting a kidney transplant. And every 14 minutes,
someone is added to the kidney transplant list.
A lifelong native of Rebersburg, 46-year-old David has been a type 2
diabetic since the age of 14. But that’s not nearly the only thing
that defines him. His deep belly laugh, his love and devotion to his
family, and the small engine repair shop he runs with his son are
also important facets of David’s life.
Naturally, many people find themselves wondering how David keeps
such a positive attitude and outlook while spending four hours at
dialysis every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
“There are people who are worse off than I am,” said David, with
that type of genuine smile that makes you instantly like someone.
“I’m one of the lucky ones, and I feel relatively good.”
David has a strong team of healthcare providers by his side, too,
including Stephen Donelan, MD, nephrology, Mount Nittany Physician
Group.
“I’ve known David at least five years, and he’s a real advocate for his
health,” said Dr. Donelan. “He tries to be informed about his lab
results, goes to all of his appointments, and wants to know how to
improve. That’s one of the reasons I think he would do so well with a
kidney transplant.”
Second, there is a program called
a kidney paired donation. In this
case, if a donor’s kidney is unable
to be donated to the intended
individual (due to a poor
blood match, for example), the
kidney can instead be donated
to someone else who is a good
match.
You may be surprised to learn that people can live a normal life with
just one kidney. According to medical experts, those who are in good
health and choose to donate a kidney are not generally at risk for laterin-life kidney problems. In addition, the cost of a donor’s evaluation,
testing, and surgery are almost always paid for by the recipient’s health
insurance.
Finally, the kidney could come
from someone who has recently
passed away, if he or she was an
organ donor. This is facilitated
through the national transplant
waiting list.
David’s new-to-him kidney may come from one of several scenarios.
“We like to see our dialysis
patients receive a transplant, because it truly gives them a second
chance at life. The dialysis serves as a bridge until the transplant can
occur,” said Dr. Donelan, who noted that, in the meantime, dialysis
seems to be working well for David, since he’s still able to work and
enjoy a decent quality of life.
Even with these staggering numbers, David has hope.
“I’ve had a few people try to donate a kidney to me, but it hasn’t
worked out yet. You just
have to keep a positive
attitude and stay
upbeat about
it, or it can eat
you alive,” said
David.
First, a friend, family member, or colleague of David’s who is a suitable
match could donate a kidney. Before donating a kidney, donors go
through rigorous health screenings to make sure they’re in good health
for the donation. Additionally, the donor’s blood type is determined to
assess compatibility with the recipient.
Talking about football, hockey, or NASCAR with the other patients
and nurses during dialysis helps pass the time. David says he feels
much better after dialysis, too, which helps remove salt, extra water,
and waste from the body, and ensures a safe level of certain body
chemicals like potassium.
For David’s case in particular, the kidney transplant would take place at
Penn State Hershey Medical Center. The first step for those interested
in learning more about potentially becoming a donor for David is to
contact Hershey’s Living Donor Coordinator at 1.800.525.5395.
“I do miss eating beans, especially at picnics,” said David.
“A lot of people don’t realize how much potassium is
in beans and watermelon. They know about bananas,
but these have a lot of potassium, too, so I have to be
careful.”
“I’ve got incredible support from my family, all the way down the line
to my cousins,” said David. “They’re a huge part of my life.”
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,
the Donate Life campaign brings together national partners, local and
regional organ, eye and tissue donation organizations, and hospitals
throughout the nation to educate employees and their communities on
the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation.
“I scared the heck out of my wife in April, two
years ago,” he said. “My sugar dropped and my
temperature crashed, and I became unresponsive.
It took more than six hours until I started to warm
up. My kidneys were just shutting down. The next
“David is a great spokesperson for the Donate Life campaign. He’s so
full of hope and positivity, and he doesn’t let this define his life. Our
goal is to help get the word out about organ donation to help David
or anyone else who is in need,” said Jacqueline Hahn, RN, BS, CPUR,
CCM, Donate Life chair for Mount Nittany Health.

Family support gets David through, too. From wife, Barbara, to sons
Andrew (18) and Matthew (16), David credits a lot of his positivity to
his family.
David says he usually finds himself sharing his story a few times each
week. The last few months, however, the frequency has increased as
David was selected as the spokesperson for Mount Nittany Health’s
participation in the Donate Life campaign.
David has been on dialysis for just over two years,
and he remembers the evening leading up to this
decision quite well, as he spent it in the emergency
department.

PULMONARY MEDICINE
Former Nintendo of America executive becomes first
graduate of new pulmonary rehabilitation program
C
harles “Peter” Eck, 70, was raised in Long
Island, N.Y., and enlisted in the army in
1965 where he worked at the Pentagon. Three
years later he moved to York, Pa., where he and
his wife were blessed with two daughters.
“It’s so gratifying to hear him say
that the program has given him
hope to do activities we never
thought he’d do again.”
Spanning his early business career, Peter was
fortunate to have found his niche, holding
executive positions for the Pennsylvania
Department of Revenue and Washington State
Lottery, all while serving in the Army Reserve.
As his career progressed, Peter took a position at
Nintendo of America as the director of network
products, where he also directed Nintendo’s
worldwide hotel and airline entertainment
division.
“Much of what we did was history in the
making,” recalled Peter. “It was so fulfilling. It
was definitely hard work, but it was also a lot of
fun working with people from all over the world
to advance Nintendo technology and maintain
leadership in the industry.”
Unfortunately, Peter’s health did not keep up
with his career, and he was diagnosed with
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),
a group of lung diseases that makes breathing very difficult. After
retiring from Nintendo in January 2006, Peter and his wife, Paula,
moved to State College.
“Many of my health problems are the result of my smoking, which
started when I was a teenager,” Peter said.
Peter’s health was a mixed bag. From COPD, to triple cardiac bypass,
to multiple stents, to then being diagnosed with lupus, it took doctors
several years to figure out what was causing all of Peter’s health issues.
In addition to the above, Peter was most recently diagnosed with
pulmonary fibrosis, a condition where lung tissue becomes damaged
or scarred, making it even more difficult to breathe. While the lung
tissue cannot be repaired, there are certain medications and therapies
that can help improve quality of life.
As Peter’s physical health worsened, his emotional health took a toll,
too. He is required to carry oxygen at all times to supplement his
breathing, and the harsh medications he was taking caused his bones
to weaken, ultimately leading to the fracture of four vertebrae.
He worried constantly.
“I became so afraid to lift, push, or carry anything for fear of not being
able to breathe or that I might further injure my back. I could sit
still or lie down safely, but bending over for anything was out of the
question,” he said.
The drastic change in his lifestyle was difficult to accept, even down
to no longer being able to walk his dog, Toby Juan Kenobi (Toby, for
short).
A breakthrough treatment
Just as it seemed there was no hope for improving his mobility
and lifestyle, John Cox, MD, pulmonary medicine, Mount Nittany
Physician Group, presented Peter with the chance to enter a completely
new program geared toward those with chronic, serious lung disease.
Set over the course of six weeks,
patients spend three days per
week with a trained therapist,
who prescribes safe, appropriate
exercises and monitors patients’
progress.
Kim Traxler, CRT, program
coordinator, carefully monitored
Peter’s progress throughout each
visit, taking vital statistics and
observing his breathing along
the way.
“This program is an effective
option for those who have
long-term, serious lung diseases.
Pulmonary rehab improves
the quality of life for patients
and lessens the chance of
additional complications and
hospitalizations. It encourages
safe physical activity and, in turn,
gives patients the confidence to
be more active,” said Dr. Cox.
“Peter has made great progress,”
said Dr. Cox, now that Peter has
officially graduated from the
program. “He is able to be more
functionally active, and I think it’s
been a real success for him.”
Peter remembers feeling
significantly better after just the
second session.
“I’m certainly not trying out
for the Olympics or anything,
but I’m able to be more active
now,” said Peter with a laugh.
“In all honesty, throughout all
of this, my wife and my family
have been super supportive and
encouraging. Their support has
meant everything to me.
Even Toby is happier now
that we can take short
walks together.”
him hope to do activities we
never thought he’d do again.
He’s so much more energetic
and enthusiastic now, and we
couldn’t be happier.”
One very important
family member, niece
Jessie, (or niecedaughter as he likes
to call her) said, “It’s
so gratifying to hear
him say that the
program has given
Peter couldn’t agree more and
continues to build upon what
he learned in the sessions.
He now participates in senior
center exercises a few times per
week and is excited to add a few
weight-bearing exercises.
“I was absolutely elated after the
first few sessions. It really affects
your mood in a positive way, and
I looked forward to attending
each session,” said Peter.
From walking on the treadmill to
using aerobic pedal machines,
Though a little hesitant at first, Peter agreed to give it a try and became
the first patient welcomed into the pulmonary rehabilitation program
at Mount Nittany Health, which began in February. The goal of the
program is to provide structured, monitored physical activity for those
with chronic lung disease.
Above: Peter used the machines shown above during his six weeks of one-on-one sessions. He praises the program for making him
more confident and active. Right: Peter enjoying a walk with Toby.

COMMUNITY HEALTH
MOUNT NITTANY HEALTH
Meet the newest providers

Reducing the stigma of mental
health in our community
M
ental health is one of the most pressing
health priorities in our community, as
identified in part from Mount Nittany Health’s
recent community health needs assessment.
In particular, through the assessment, the
community noted the importance of
reducing the stigma associated with a
mental health illness. People often avoid
seeking care because of this stigma,
which makes providing care and
delivering support services particularly
difficult and fragmented.
There are many ways people in our
community are joining together to
reduce the stigma associated with
mental health. Several programs were
held throughout May to recognize Mental
Health Awareness Month, such as the Stopwatch
Walking Art Gallery (a collaboration of Skills, the
Jana Marie Foundation and the Downtown Improvement District), funded
in part by the Mental Health Matters Grant. Stopwatches decorated by
individuals who have an association with mental illness were displayed in
participating business locations and libraries around Centre County.
The Mental Health Matters Grant also sponsored the creation of the Voice
Stomper, a collaborative art installation led by the Jana Marie Foundation
as part of their “Stomp Out Stigma” campaign. The Stomper was unveiled
at a Candle Light Vigil held on May 20 and is the result of the Pennsylvania
Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Mental Health
Matters Initiative, Centre County Office of Mental Health and Intellectual
Disabilities, and the Jana Marie Foundation. The Stomper will be a roving
art exhibit throughout Centre County intended to spark conversations about
mental illness and provide education.
What can you do to reduce the stigma of mental illness? To put it into
perspective, approximately 54 million Americans suffer from some sort of
mental disorder each year, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder,
and schizophrenia. It’s important to understand the symptoms of a mental
illness, which can include confused thinking, extreme mood changes,
withdrawal from friends and activities, significant tiredness, and/or changes
in eating habits. If you know someone who is expressing these signs,
support them in getting the help they need, and take the time to learn and
understand their diagnosis. Communicate openly with your friend or loved
one to help you recognize what they are experiencing, and remember to
listen to them.
Local mental health associations can be great resources.
For more information on resources available in our
community, visit mountnittany.org or call Mount Nittany

THANKING OUR DONORS
GIVING
Gifts of all sizes help The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center support the
mission of Mount Nittany Health. Each and every tax-deductible gift is deeply appreciated
and instrumental in assisting and encouraging our health system as we advance.
Dear friends:
As we reflect upon 2014, we do so with great gratitude—gratitude for the amazing work being done by an incredible staff, and gratitude for the opportunity to take
care of the health of you, your family and all of our neighbors.
This last year, we saw the birth of the Healing Garden, a tangible and visible reflection of the commitment of our community to improving the lives of our patients,
physicians and staff. The vision and inspiration for the garden has been led by Dr. and Mrs. Richard Dixon. Dr. Dixon committed his career to patient care and, along
with his wife, Nancy, has since committed a great deal of his time and talent to making the Healing Garden a reality. With support from the 2014 Golf Classic and this
year’s Charity Ball, this project has truly come to life, and we look forward to a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebratory event for the community this fall.
In 2014, we celebrated the opening of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Centre County, Mount Nittany Health, a community-based, child-focused center that brings
a compassionate and caring approach to child abuse prevention, intervention and treatment. The Center has already been awarded accreditation by National
Children’s Alliance and has earned the “Community Service” award at the Chamber of Business & Industry of Centre County Awards Gala in 2014.
While we anticipate the opening of the Healing Garden and celebrate the success of the Children’s Advocacy Center, we are grateful for the contributions made that
are not so visible. Many of the programs and areas of patient care receive tremendous support through The Foundation. From enhancements to the Sieg Neuroscience
Center to support of patients and caregivers who visit the Shaner Cancer Pavilion, philanthropy has tremendous impact on these programs and the patients they serve to
respond to immediate needs and continue to stay on the cutting edge of technology.
We simply would be remiss if we didn’t again say thank you for all of the ways you support Mount Nittany Health and, in turn, the health and well-being of your
community. We stand committed to providing the best patient care possible, and we are glad you have joined us in this effort.
Warm regards,
Steven E. Brown, FACHE
