Tortoise & Hair™ Conference Walk
On this year’s Tortoise

Walk, you will trace
Miami’s picturesque
Riverwalk as you raise
awareness of alopecia
areata along with funds
to benefit NAAF in
our ongoing effort to
provide awareness,
support, and research for the alopecia areata community.
There’s no entry fee, but each walker or family must
have a pledge sheet with a minimum total donation of $25
per individual or $50 per family—and there will be amazing
prizes for those who raise the most. Details and pledge
sheets will be included in conference confirmation packets.
(See page 11 for details)
Don’t think you’ll be going to the conference, but still
want to participate in the walk? No problem! You can set
up a donation page allowing you to hold your own virtual

Patient-Centered Outcomes Research
(PCOR) Training
With the current accelerated pace of research in our
disease and the increasing importance of patient-centered
outcomes to inform the development of treatments
relevant to patients, we find ourselves at a critical juncture
where we need, but lack a way to measure results that are
meaningful to you.
Our community is being asked to participate in the
research process by providing experiential testimony,
contributing to the development of a Patient Reported
Outcomes Instrument, and participating in clinical studies,
but we are not yet prepared to meaningfully engage
in and inform the design of patient-centered clinical
research to its fullest potential.
During this two-hour training session led by NAAF’s
Health and Research Ambassadors, you will learn how to
find your voice in research, meaningfully engage in and
inform the design of patient-centered clinical research,
and gain an understanding of the impact we can have in
the research and regulatory process.

Exhibitor Displays
NAAF Conference Exhibitors invite
you to visit their
displays showcasing
the many products
and supplies available for people with
alopecia areata.
All exhibitors are
available for private
appointments. There will be no exhibitor displays on
Sunday, but there will be a special “Meet the Exhibitors”
session from 2 to 4 pm on Thursday, June 22. This is your
opportunity to see, touch, feel, and purchase hard-to-find
products that are helpful for dealing with alopecia areata
on a daily basis.
Parents are required to complete and return permission
and emergency consent forms for each child participating in the Children’s Conference Camp. See pages 9–10
for details. For children with allergies or special dietary
needs, parents MUST provide a detailed list of safe and
acceptable foods for the scheduled snacks, lunches and/
or dinners during the Children’s Conference Camp. This
information needs to be included with the Parent Permission
and Responsibility Form so we can plan an appropriate
menu for your child. Upon receipt of all your completed
registration forms, NAAF will send a conference confirmation packet.
Due to logistical and space issues, the children’s talent
show will be incorporated into the Children’s Conference
Camp events again this year.
Children’s Alopecia Areata Conference Camp:
The Premier Event for Kids with Alopecia Areata
The NAAF Conference is for people of all ages who live
with alopecia areata or care about someone who does.
The following conference “tracks” highlight group sessions
and activities based on targeted interests to help you get
the most out of your four-day conference experience.
You can attend sessions in one track or multiple tracks.
Kids Camp (ages 5–10)
Tweens Camp (ages 11–13)
Teens Camp (ages 14–17)
The Children’s Conference Camp supports children
with alopecia areata by nurturing their self-esteem through
carefully planned activities by the Corporate Kids Events
(CKE) team. Support arises spontaneously as the kids interact with others who have alopecia areata, as well as their
siblings and friends, in
a fun, creative, and
active environment.
Kids, Tweens and Teens
are sure to adapt
quickly and make new
friends and wonderful
memories. Creative
arts and activities are
interspersed throughout the weekend.
Camp Safety
Sign-in & Digital Photos are required for all Campers. To
ensure their safety, children who participate in the Kids
& Tweens Camp will be photographed initially with their
parent or guardian, and only those adults who appear in
the photo with the child will be able to sign-out the child
from camp.
Corporate Kids Events has organized and managed
camps for children of all ages for over 20 years. Parents
trust and value the professional, high-quality care the CKE
counselors consistently give to children. All CKE counselors
are certified in CPR and First Aid and take part in an
extensive CKE training program. They are fingerprinted
and background-checked. NAAF volunteers will also
be on hand to interact with the children to enrich their
conference experience.

n 1) It’s OK to Feel Sad | GENERAL TRACK
Are you struggling with alopecia areata? You are not alone.
Whether you yourself, your child, or a loved one have been
diagnosed with this disease, this support group is for people
who are having a hard time coping with the grief and loss
associated with alopecia areata. Whether it’s been months or
years, it’s okay to feel sad. Just as alopecia areata (and the
associated amount and type of hair loss) differs for everyone,
so does the grief and loss process surrounding the condition.
Workshop leader Matt Kelley is a longtime NAAF volunteer and
telephone support contact, a Marriage & Family Therapist,
and a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Intern.
n 3) Alopecia Areata Mentoring Program
YOUNG ADULTS TRACK
Looking to make a difference? NAAF’s Mentoring Program
will formally launch at the Conference! We invite you to join
us as the first generation of mentors. The best role model is
someone who is one step ahead. Sharing your personal
experience may help other kids and teens live with alopecia
areata as well as parents cope with their child’s condition.
NAAF volunteers Rafi Wasserman and Nell Sanders will lead this
session that will introduce the program, define the roles and
objectives for the mentors and show you how to get involved!
n 4) Child Development Resiliency | PARENTS TRACK
This workshop will help parents understand the phases of
a child’s overall growth, how a child with alopecia areata
develops his or her concept of self, and how resiliency can
be nurtured and supported to empower a child’s efforts to
cope. Workshop leader, Dr. Richard Long, has worked with
NAAF since its inception as a government relations and mental
health consultant and holds a doctorate in counseling from
George Washington University.

new ones during the Veteran & VIP
Welcome Reception. Don’t be shy!
Whether it’s your first conference or
your fifteenth, we are all here for the
same reason. We encourage all
conference Veterans to welcome the
VIP attendees (the First-Timers), and we
urge all VIPs to introduce themselves!
Hearty appetizers will be served, and
a cash bar will be available.

to overall better health outcomes. Workshop leader, Kristina
Gorbatenko-Roth, a psychology professor at the University
of Wisconsin-Stout, will discuss the role of mental health
education and care throughout the course of alopecia
areata and share tips for communicating with your physician
