Summer Programs for Children and Teens at the Libraries

Summer Programs for Children and Teens at the Libraries
TD Summer Reading Club:
On your mark, get set, GO! Join the Club this summer and journey to places, ideas,
tastes, sounds, stories, and characters never experienced before! Sometimes hairraising. Sometimes awesome. Sometimes just plain wacky, but never boring. Go it alone
or bring a friend. With the free TD Summer Reading Club, you, your family, and your
friends can go anywhere and do anything! Register for this adventure by visiting your
local library and receive your travel kit which includes a passport and activity book. Also
check out the Library’s website at http://www.mississauga.ca/summerreadingclub. Join
the fun and attend weekly programs at your Library where there will be crafts, games,
and activities. GO! for it starting Tuesday, July 2, 2013 @ your local Mississauga
library.
NOTE TO PARENTS:
Research indicates that library summer reading programs contribute to increased
reading and increased reading enjoyment. Children who participate in summer reading
programs improve or at least maintain their reading levels over the summer months.
Teachers have reported that a higher percentage of summer reading participants
(versus non-participating students) performed at or above grade level in: word
recognition, reading, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
Drop in Programs
Storytimes feature stories, songs, and rhymes for children and their caregivers.
Programs run at various times for various age groups throughout the summer. All drop
in programs are free, and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be advised
that space is limited at all these programs. Check with your local library regarding
specific program details.
Registered Programs
Ticket sales and registration begins at all locations starting Saturday, June 8, 2013.
For professional performances, children under five years of age must be accompanied
by a paying adult; admission for infants is free. Please note that parents are responsible
for their children’s supervision at all times in the Library. Where applicable, PLEASE
REGISTER EARLY as space is limited in all programs. Registration fees are nonrefundable. Library programs are for everyone – if a participant requires personal
support in order to participate, a support person will be admitted into the program at
no charge.
Ready, Set, Read! Summer Reading Program
The Library, with its partner the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board, offers a six
week program for children in Grades 1-3 and their parents /caregivers. The program is
free and registration is required. The Ready, Set, Read Program:
• continues to sustain children’s reading development over the summer months
by providing access to quality authentic literature at students’ independent
levels
• provides a structure for student reading, application of reading comprehension
strategies and response activities
• models and demonstrates quality read aloud sessions by certified teachers
• facilitates parent support through the Parent Tool Kits and participation in the
Read Aloud sessions
