J. Major Research Accomplishments:
•
In June 2010, with funding from the new NSERC Engage Grant program, I initiated a
proof-of-concept study with Vive Nano Inc. from Toronto, ON. Vive Nano Inc. has
developed technology that enables them to encapsulate the active ingredients of
formulated insecticides in polymer nano-capsules 10-20 nm in size. While there has been
substantial research conducted on micro-encapsulated insecticides using particles > 100
nm, research on nano-encapsulated formulations is negligible. Due to the small size and
large surface area of nano-capsules it is anticipated that there will be heightened
bioactivity and perhaps extended bioavailability of the active ingredients to the primary
target pests following application in the agro-ecosystem. In addition, there is the potential
that reduced amounts of active ingredients in nano-encapsulated formulations would be
required due to increased toxicity. All these characteristics are important in ensuring the
long-term viability of the environment and agro-ecosystems but research needs to be
conducted in the short-term to confirm the extent of their bioactivity and move towards
global commercialization. The study funded by NSERC will focus on determining the
range of toxicity, through contact and oral exposure routes, of selected nano-encapsulated
insecticides – phosmet, lambda-cyhalothrin and spinosad on tarnished plant bug in
comparison to the same active ingredients in conventional insecticide formulations. In the
contact toxicity bioassays insecticides will be applied to adult TPB using a 1/9th scale
version of the Potter spray tower (PST). The mini spray tower was created, manufactured
and verified by the Scott-Dupree Lab at the UofG. The mini-tower operates like the PST
84
C.V.
Scott-Dupree
as it applies an even spray (using a mounted air brush sprayer) within a fixed area.
However, unlike the PST, the mini-tower allows for the application of formulated product
and can be used with very small insects (< 5mm length). In the oral-ingestions bioassays,
leaves from green bean plants will be harvested and cut into equal sizes using a 1.5 cm
circular leaf cutter. Individual leaf discs will be dipped into each insecticide treatment
for 10 s, removed and allowed to dry. Both Vive Nano Inc. scientist and myself are
extremely excited about the opportunity to investigate strategies for delivering reduced
risk pesticides to target insect pest using the cutting edge technology they have
developed.
In October 2009, Vive Nano won the Deloitte Technology Green 15 Award which
recognizes those Canadian companies that offer solutions to global environmental
challenges by creating intellectual property and technology that reduces society’s
environmental impact.

I have established strong collaborative relationships with colleagues in other departments
at the University of Guelph, other universities, provincial and federal government
institutions, industry, allowing me to establish excellent Advisory Committees for my
graduate students. In effect, I have worked very hard at creating effective multi-faceted
pods of researchers able to deal with complex environmental and pest management
related problems. Not only do the researchers benefit in these collaborative ventures, but
also the graduate students. In many cases my esteemed colleagues have agreed to act as
Co-Supervisor for graduate students. Students in turn are exposed to the expertise of
these individuals on a regular basis and also to the state-of-the-art facilities and
equipment that are available at their institutions. It is truly a win-win situation.
•
I have very successfully combined my expertise in apicultural science with economic
entomology and have moved into an area of research that is foremost on the minds of
regulatory agencies, industry, government and the general public - “Non-target effects of
pesticides.” The whole issue of pesticide/pollinator-beneficial insect interactions is
becoming a high research priority nationally (i.e., NSERC-AAFC Partnership funding for
Winston/Scott-Dupree project) and internationally and with my apiculture and pest
management expertise I am uniquely qualified to participate and lead this area of
research. My primary research focus is the non-target impact of agroecosystems on bee
pollinators – specifically looking at insecticide-bee pollinator interactions.
•
Since 1999, my laboratory has been investigating the impact of various insecticides (e.g.,
imidicloprid, clothianidin, novaluron, spinosad, carbofuran, Bt crops, rynaxiprines
(chlorantraniliprole and cyazapyr, metaflumizone, flubendiamide, spirotetramat,
spinetoram) commonly used in agro-ecosystems (field and greenhouse) on indigenous
arthropod biological control agents, bee pollinators and greenhouse beneficial insects.
We have been successful in developing bioassays and field methodology that has allowed
us to ascertain the potential impact of crop protection products prior to wide scale
commercial use.

I have been extremely successful in establishing close working relationships with several
industrial/grower association partners including Bayer CropScience, Dow AgroSciences,
Crompton Co./Cie, Mahkteshim Agan North America, Monsanto, BASF, Dupont,
Flowers Canada (Ontario) (FCO), Ontario Apple Growers, Ontario Greenhouse
Vegetable Growers and the Ontario Fresh Vegetable Growers. Not only have these
industrial partners turned to me to undertake research on agro-ecosystem impacts on nontarget arthropods, but they also have requested my involvement as a consultant (i.e.,
Expert Witness in the legal forum) in situations that require input based on my expertise
in agro-ecosystem impact on pollinator populations. In addition, most of these industrial
partners have been the sponsors of 7 NSERC IPS for graduate students of mine. In all
cases, the industrial/grower association sponsors have found the interaction with the
graduate students reciprocally beneficial resulting in several job offers to the students
when they graduate.
•
In April 2003, Dr. Mark Winston from Simon Fraser University and I received an
NSERC-AAFC Partnership Grant entitled “Agricultural Practices and Wild Pollinators”
that is funded until 2007. This 4-year study ($105,700/year + and additional
$20,000/year that has recently been accessed from industry) will examine the impact of
agriculture on wild pollinating bees by investigating the effects of chemical pesticides as
well as proteins inserted into transgenic crops on wild bees and will compare the
diversity, abundance and pollination efficacy of wild bees in conventional, genetically
modified and organic cropping systems for sweet corn and canola. I would like to
emphasize that I am one of few pest management specialists in Canada investigating the
impact of transgenic crops on non-target arthropods. As a result of this, I was invited to
present the results of the national study at a special GM Symposium at the 39th
International Apimondia Congress in Dublin, Ireland in August, 2005.
•
In 2004, I experienced my first sabbatical since joining the faculty at the University of
Guelph in 1986. It was a wonderfully rewarding experience providing an opportunity not
only to expand my academic horizons but also permitting for personal growth and an
adjustment in long-term perspective. I spent 5 weeks at Simon Fraser University in the
lab of a special colleague and mentor - Dr. Mark Winston where I learned many special
lab techniques that I shared with my New Zealand colleagues in Fall’04. With the aid of
an OECD Fellowship I received, I was able to spend 14 weeks in New Zealand
(September - December) working on a variety of research projects in Auckland and
Christchurch.
•
In 2005, I took the plunge in terms of converting my lab into a GLP facility. The
initial project done under GLP (client = Bayer CropSciences) focused on the potential
chronic or sub-lethal affect of clothianidin seed treated canola on foraging honey bees
– it was a large scale long term field trial. Total budget for the project was ~$250,000.
This project was of major international significance. The final report was submitted
86
C.V.
Scott-Dupree
and accepted by EPA and PMRA in July, 2006. A refereed scientific publication
resulted “Cutler, G.C. and C.D. Scott-Dupree, C.D. 2007. Exposure to clothianidin
seed-treated canola has no long-term impact on honey bees. Journal of Economic
Entomology 100: 765-772”.
A second GLP field study looking at the sub-lethal impact of clothianidin seed treated
canola on honey bees exposed to the crop during bloom was initiated in 2012. Bayer
CropScience is the client again with Larry Brewer of Smithers Viscient appointed as
Study Director, and Dr. Chris Cutler and myself as Principle Investigators. Total
budget for this project is estimated at $820,000.

From 1997-2002, when the biopesticide spinosad was a novel molecule, we worked in
collaboration with Dow AgroSciences Canada to identify innovative IPM applications for
this reduced risk insecticide. Spinosad was finally registered for use in Canada in 2002.
•
In the early 1990's, Dr. Gard Otis (SES) and I were successful in breeding honey bees
that were resistant to tracheal mites. The mite resistant lines had significantly lower mite
abundance and prevalence in each of two generations that were tracked. The high mite
resistant lines showed resistance equal to that of bees that had undergone natural
selection from tracheal mite infestations for 3 yr. in New York. In addition, we were able
to prove that a short-term bioassay was effective in evaluating field colonies to determine
relative resistance, thus providing researchers with a much more rapid method of
screening for resistance in honey bee populations.
