Teresa Kindler Mizell
Butts Road Intermediate School
FINALIST
Teresa Mizell, a third-grade GATE teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Longwood
College and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She has served as School
Beautification Committee chair, Reading Incentives Committee member, and was named
2013 Butts Road Intermediate Reading Teacher of the Year. Teresa has worked before and
after school as a remediation teacher and served as a mentor teacher. Currently she
participates on the Technology Committee, Synergy Team, and serves as science lead
teacher for Butts Road Intermediate. Teresa is a member of the Chesapeake Reading Council and
Hickory United Methodist Church, and enjoys gardening, cooking, and spending time
with her family and friends. She resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Tim, and son,
Zach. Their daughter, Katie, resides in Washington, Virginia. Mrs. Mizell has 31 years of
teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Bridget Eads
Butts Road Primary School
Bridget Eads, a second-grade teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Marist College in
New York. She has served as a Synergy instructor, Reading and Young Writer’s chairperson, and
PTA representative. Currently she is a member of the Literacy Committee, Staff Development
Committee, and Math FOCUS team. In addition, she serves as grade -level chairperson,
math lead, and GATE liaison. Mrs. Eads also co-sponsors the grade- level float in the
Chesapeake Rotary Parade. She is a member of the Chesapeake Reading Council,
International Reading Association, Relay for Life Team, Booster Club, and PTA. Bridget
enjoys gardening, photography, and watching her boys at their sporting events. She
resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Chris, and their three boys, Connor, Daniel, and
Erik. Mrs. Eads has four years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Valery Valentine
Camelot Elementary School
Valery Valentine, a fifth-grade teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State
University and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She has served as
chairperson for her grade level and the Literacy Committee, was recognized as Who’s
Who Among American Teachers, was selected Reading Teacher of the Year three times for
her school and twice as Teacher of the Year for her school. Valery currently serves as chairperson
for Young Authors, teaches adult writing classes and for the SOL Saturday Academy, is the
coordinator for Literacy Night, and volunteers with numerous school events. She is chairperson
for the Relay for Life Team at Camelot and is a member of NEA, VEA, CEA, and the
Golden Years Club. Valery enjoys reading, writing poetry and short stories, and collecting
Boyds Bears. She resides in Virginia Beach and has one son, Nikoleus. Mrs. Valentine has
43 years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Kristin N. Garman
G. W. Carver Intermediate School
FINALIST
Kristin Garman, a fourth-grade special education teacher, received her bachelor’s degree
from Liberty University and her master’s degree from Regent University. She was selected
as Reading Teacher of the Year in 2011 for Southwestern Elementary and for Carver
Intermediate in 2016. Currently she serves as special education grade chair and a beginning
teacher mentor. Kristin is a member of the International Literacy Association and Virginia
State Reading Association, and is President-Elect of the Chesapeake Reading Council.
Kristin enjoys volunteering with the ziMS Foundation, working with the Horizons
program, and watching the NY Mets play baseball. She resides in Chesapeake with her
pink garden flamingo named Audrey. Ms. Garman has nine years of teaching experience,
all of which have been in Chesapeake.

Kelly Lader
Cedar Road Elementary School
Kelly Lader, an elementary-level music teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from
Old Dominion University. She has won two National Association of Teachers Singing
competitions, the Old Dominion University Concerto Competition, and led the Landstown
Middle School Chorus to a superior festival rating. Currently she is the Cedar Road
Elementary Chorus and Handbell director, chair of the Cedar Road Elementary Sunshine
Committee, and serves as the choir director of Apostles Lutheran Church in Chesapeake.
Kelly is an adjunct faculty member at Paul D. Camp Community College in Franklin and
serves as an adjudicator for the Chesapeake middle school district chorus auditions. Kelly
is a member of Friends of the Arts and The National Association of Teachers Singing, and
enjoys reading, teaching private voice and piano lessons, and personal finance blogging.
She resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Bill, and her three cats, Lola, Punga, and Pico.
Mrs. Lader has eight years of teaching experience, six of which have been in Chesapeake.
Jennifer C. Spinella
E.W. Chittum Elementary School
Jennifer Spinella, a special education teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Misericordia
University in Dallas, PA. She has mentored student teachers, been a VAAP coordinator,
and piloted a new schoolwide program for an Autism classroom. Currently she is a member of
the Multicultural Committee and Literacy Team, mentors beginning teachers, and serves
on a Beginning Teacher Pair & Share panel. Jennifer is a member of the Chittum PTA and
Special Education Professional Learning Committee. She enjoys helping the local SPCA,
donating to Saint Jude’s, and spending time with her family. She resides in Norfolk with
her husband, Jonathan, and their two children, Kylie and Colton. Mrs. Spinella has 13 years
of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Deryl Hairston Winborne
Crestwood Intermediate School
Deryl Hairston Winborne, a special education teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from
Norfolk State University and is pursuing a master’s degree from Regent University. She
has served as department chairperson, Reading Teacher of the Year for her school, building
representative for the CEA, and member of various committees with the VEA. Currently
she is a member of the Student Recognition Committee, School Safety Team, and VAAP
Committee. She serves as department chairperson and holds several offices in church
groups and her sorority. Deryl is a member of Phi Delta Kappa and enjoys reading, spending
time with her family and friends, and participating in church activities. She resides in
Chesapeake with Thomas. Her son, Joel, and his family live in Portsmouth. Mrs. Winborne
has 37 years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.

Kendal Myers Hulce
Deep Creek Central Elementary School
FINALIST
Kendal Hulce, a special education teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Radford
University and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She served as chairperson
for the American Education Week Committee and was a member of the Federal Review
and Enhanced Student Teacher Assistance Teams. Kendal also served as Special Education
Literacy ambassador, Young Achievers mentor, new teacher mentor, READ 180 and
System 44 instructor, and participated in Relay for Life and the American Heart Walk.
She is a recipient of the Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation Instructional
Classroom Grant for 2016-2017. Currently Kendal serves on the American Teacher Panel,
participatess in educational summer retreats, and is a certified Leveled Literacy Intervention
instructor. She serves as special education department chairperson, Child Study Team
chairperson, and is the Synergy specialist at her school. Kendal is a member of Delta
Kappa Gamma International Society for women educators, the Women's Division of
Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, Chesapeake Sister Cities, Chesapeake Reading
Council, PTA, and Chesapeake Avenue United Methodist Church where she has assisted
with the Hagar’s Sisters’ Ministry for Teen and Single Moms and the Society of St.
Stephen’s food closet. She enjoys traveling and creating new memories with her family.
Kendal resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Jeremy, and their two boys, Rylan and
Colton. Mrs. Hulce has 13 years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Lisa Marie Hinebaugh Phillips
Deep Creek Elementary School
Lisa M. Phillips, a fourth-grade teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from West Virginia
University and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She was Teacher of the
Year for her school in 2000, was nominated to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and
wrote the secondary special education curriculum for Barbour County Schools in West
Virginia in 1979-1980. Currently Lisa provides student tutoring, works with SOL Prep, is
chairperson for the Student Recognition and Awards Committee, and serves as the math
team leader. Lisa is a member of NEA, VEA, and CEA, enjoys landscaping, gardening,
fishing, and is a strong supporter of the Deep Creek High School football team. She resides
in Chesapeake with her husband, Ricardo, her son, Ricardo Spencer Phillips, and her
granddaughter, Jordan Phillips. Mrs. Phillips has 37 years of teaching experience, 34 of
which have been in Chesapeake.
Julia T. Coltrain
Georgetown Primary School
FINALIST
Julia Coltrain, a kindergarten teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State
University and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She has served as
grade chair or co-chair for kindergarten, first, second, and third grades. Julia was Teacher
of the Year in 1996 for her school and Reading Teacher of the Year in 2008 for her school.
Currently she participates in INDISTAR, Family Fun and Fitness, and the Steering Committee
at Georgetown Primary. Julia is a member of NEA and the PTA, and enjoys her work with
Beta Kappa Sorority. She also volunteers as a teacher of religious education at the
Church of the Ascension. Julia resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Jeff. They have
three sons and two grandchildren. Mrs. Coltrain has 24 years of teaching experience, all of
which have been in Chesapeake.

Yolanda Stewart Vaughn
Grassfield Elementary School
Yolanda Vaughn, a second-grade teacher, received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees
from George Mason University and an additional master’s degree from The George
Washington University. She has served as grade-level chairperson and has been recognized
as Reading Teacher of the Year twice for her school. Currently Yolanda participates in the
Chesapeake Reading Council, CEA, and the Relay for Life team. Yolanda is a member of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Jack and Jill of America, and enjoys reading,
traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She resides in Chesapeake with
her husband, Lloyd, and son, Trey. Mrs. Vaughn has 19 years of teaching experience, 16 of
which have been in Chesapeake.
Christian Anderson
Great Bridge Intermediate School
Christian Anderson, a fifth-grade teacher, received his bachelor’s degree from the University
of Hawaii and his master’s degree from Old Dominion University. He has served as the
504 chairperson and mentored several new teachers. Currently Christian is a member of
the school Wellness Committee, participates on the annual “March Madness” faculty
basketball team, serves as chairperson for the school’s annual fifth-grade Kickball
Tournament, and is a sponsoring teacher for the Great Bridge High School Educational
Intern Program. Christian is a proud veteran of the United States Navy and enjoys going
to museums, concerts, and baseball games. He resides in Chesapeake with his wife,
Shannon, and has two adult children, Chad and Hannah. Mr. Anderson has 16 years of
teaching experience, 14 of which have been in Chesapeake.
Brenda Slaughter
Great Bridge Primary School
Brenda Slaughter, a first-grade teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Longwood
University. She has served as grade-level department chair for multiple years, a cooperating
teacher for several student teachers, a mentor for first-grade first year teachers, and a
member of the Benchmark Literacy Implementation Team. Currently Brenda participates
in PTA school activities and serves as chairperson for Great Bridge Primary’s Sunshine
Committee. She enjoys snow skiing, cooking, going to the beach, helping with a variety of
programs for the Homeless, and supporting the children who stay at the Ronald McDonald
House. Brenda resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Del, and two children, Corbin and
Sydney. Mrs. Slaughter has 28 years of teaching experience, 23 of which have been in Chesapeake.
LaToya Sanderson
Greenbrier Intermediate School
LaToya Sanderson, a fifth-grade teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Virginia
Wesleyan College and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She has served
as chairperson of the Student Recognition Committee, Staff Development Council
representative, and coach of the student basketball team. Currently LaToya serves as
chairperson of the Discipline Support Committee, is a member of PTA and the Chesapeake
Reading Council, and enjoys cooking, scrapbooking, and watching movies. She resides in
Chesapeake with her husband, Raleigh. Mrs. Sanderson has 17 years of teaching experience,
all of which have been in Chesapeake.

Courtney L. Waterfield
Greenbrier Primary School
Courtney Waterfield, a kindergarten teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Virginia
Tech and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She has served as the
Reading Committee chair and has represented her school for several Professional Learning
Community trainings. Currently Courtney serves as the collaboration leader for her grade
level, is a member of the INDISTAR Team and Technology Committee, helps train
student teachers, and instructs practicum teachers. Courtney is a member of the Virginia
and Chesapeake Reading Councils, volunteers for the Great Bridge Crew Club and Great
Bridge High School Band, and enjoys being an active parent in her children's schools. She
resides in Chesapeake with her three children: Andrew, Emily, and Mason. Ms. Waterfield
has 12 years of teaching experience, seven of which have been in Chesapeake.
Gretchen Smith
Hickory Elementary School
FINALIST
Gretchen Smith, a fifth-grade teacher, received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees
from Old Dominion University. She has served as Student Activities chairperson and as
a presenter at the Virginia State Reading Association Conference. Currently Gretchen is a
mentor for pre-service teachers enrolled in Old Dominion University’s teaching program.
She serves as PBIS Committee co-chairperson and Math Focus Group representative, and
is a member of the Chesapeake Reading Council and River Oak Church. Gretchen enjoys
spending time with family and friends, volunteering, and cheering her students on while
participating in their favorite activities. She resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Brandon,
and their two dogs, Stella and Jax. Mrs. Smith has three years of teaching experience, all of
which have been in Chesapeake.
Natasha M. Foreman
Thurgood Marshall Elementary School
Natasha Foreman, a fourth-grade teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Virginia
Commonwealth University. She participates in the Parent Involvement and Principal
Advisory Committees and serves as the fourth-grade department chairperson. Natasha is
a member of the Virginia Education Association and enjoys singing, praise dancing, and
bowling. She resides in Portsmouth, Virginia. Ms. Foreman has three years of teaching
experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Alyson Linyear Wilson
Norfolk Highlands Primary School
FINALIST
Alyson Wilson, a first-grade teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State and
her master’s degrees from Roosevelt University and National Louis University in Chicago, IL.
She has been a mentor and master teacher, grade-level chair, member of school improvement
committees, and has obtained over $10,000 in educational grants for her classroom and
school. Currently Alyson participates in the Touch of Kindness, is a member of the Technology
and Grant Writing Committees, and serves as an after-school remediation tutor. Alyson
partners with her team at church as a youth leader, actively writes grants for her classroom,
school, and community, and enjoys reading, traveling, and volunteering with church and
community partners. She resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Cornell, and children,
Katrina and Morgan. Mrs. Wilson has 16 years of teaching experience, three of which have
been in Chesapeake.

Elizabeth Nichole Simmons
Portlock Primary School
Nichole Simmons, a first-grade teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Longwood
University. She has coached the Western Branch JV softball team and served as grade-level
co-chair. Currently she participates in the Fitness and Health Committee and Wellness
Committee. Nichole is a member of the Chesapeake Reading Council and enjoys traveling,
playing slow pitch softball, and spending time with family. She resides in Suffolk with
Brandon Aston. Miss Simmons has five years of teaching experience, all of which have
been in Chesapeake.
Kimberly Higgerson
Southeastern Elementary School
Kimberly Higgerson, a third-grade teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from East Carolina
University in North Carolina and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University.
She has served as grade-level chairperson for the past 10 years. Currently Kimberly participates
in the Christmas for Families, PBIS and “Sunshine” Social Committees, and serves as
Power-School Ambassador. Kim enjoys reading, photography, and baseball. She resides in
Chesapeake with her husband, Don, and sons: Hunter, Colby and Landon. Mrs. Higgerson
has 25 years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Jonita Shabazz
Southwestern Elementary School
Jonita Shabazz, a reading specialist, received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees
from Old Dominion University. She has served as a grade-level chair and Accelerated
Reader Program coordinator, was the 2005 divisionwide Rookie Teacher of the Year for
Suffolk Public Schools, and 2007 Reading Teacher of the Year for Creekside Elementary
in Suffolk. Currently Jonita participates in the Virginia State Reading Association, School
Improvement Engagement Team, and Reading Month Committee, and serves as Staff
Development presenter. Jonita is a member of the Chesapeake Reading Council and enjoys
singing in the choir and participating in Fundraising 5K events. She resides in Chesapeake
with her husband, Rasool, and children, Leah and Lauren. Mrs. Shabazz has 13 years of
teaching experience, two of which have been in Chesapeake.
Leigha H. Canterbury
Sparrow Road Intermediate School
Leigha Canterbury, a reading specialist, received her bachelor’s degree from Marshall
University in West Virginia and both her master’s degree and educational specialist degree
from Regent University. She serves as INDISTAR process manager, Instructional Team
leader and remediation coordinator for her school, supports various PTA events, and will
be helping participants train for the Final Mile. Leigha is a member of DKG – Omega
Chapter and enjoys spending time with her family. She resides in Virginia Beach with her
husband, Trap, and two children, Benjamin and Emma Grace. Mrs. Canterbury has 13
years of teaching experience, seven of which have been in Chesapeake.

Megan E. Price
G. A. Treakle Elementary School
Megan Price, a music teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Christopher Newport
University. She has received the Sword of Honor and the Rose of Honor from Sigma Alpha
Iota (a women’s music fraternity) for her commitment to the fraternity and her volunteer
work in the community. Currently Megan participates in the Parental Involvement and
the SOL Pep Rally Committees, serves as co-chair of the Remembrance Committee, and is
a member of the CEA, National Association for Music Educators, and Sigma Alpha Iota.
She enjoys painting, singing with her church’s worship team, and volunteering with
Symphonicity. Ms. Price resides in Chesapeake and has four years of teaching experience,
all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Kyle Riggs
Truitt Intermediate School
Kyle Riggs, a physical education and health teacher, received his bachelor’s degree from
Liberty University. He has served as the head coordinator for Special Games at Great
Bridge Intermediate, chairperson for Field Day, and Truitt’s Safe Routes to School organizer.
Currently Kyle participates in Field Day, Jump Rope for Heart, and Family Fun and Fitness
Night. He serves as head coach for Truitt’s basketball team, co-chair for school safety patrols
and is chairperson for Field Day and the Family Fun and Fitness Committee. Kyle enjoys
volunteering in the community, exploring the outdoors and spending time with family.
He resides in Shawboro, NC with his wife, Rebecca, who is expecting their first child.
Mr. Riggs has four years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Wendy Boyce
Western Branch Intermediate School
Wendy Boyce, a physical education and health teacher, received her bachelor’s degree
from Old Dominion University. She has served as physical education department chair
for thirteen years at Western Branch Middle and received both the “Burning the Midnight
Oil” and “Pleasant and Kind” awards in June 2008 at WBM. Currently Wendy participates
in the INDISTAR Committee, provides student training for the Operation Smile Shamrock
Final Mile, serves as co-coach of the fifth-grade basketball team, and is the coordinator
for the Wellness Committee and Jump Rope For Heart. Wendy is a member of SHAPE
America (the Society of Health and Physical Educators), loves sunshine and the beach, and
enjoys listening to good music and watching her son play baseball, football, and basketball.
She resides in Suffolk with her husband, Mike, and son, Ryan. Mrs. Boyce has 23 years of
teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Karen Judy
Western Branch Primary School
Karen Judy, an elementary-level school librarian, received her bachelor’s degree from
Christopher Newport University and a certificate in school library science from Old
Dominion University. She has served as PTA president and member of the Superintendent’s
Planning Council. Currently Karen is secretary for the ESTAT Interdisciplinary Team,
serves as chair of the Resource Team and the Parent/Community Engagement Team, and
is a member of the Principal’s Advisory Committee. Karen is a member of the Virginia
State Reading Association and the Chesapeake Reading Council, and enjoys being at the
beach, spending time with her family, and serving at Believers Church. She resides in
Chesapeake with her husband, Jason, and their two sons, Caleb and Andrew. Mrs. Judy
has nine years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.

Kerry Grissom
B. M. Williams Primary School
FINALIST
Kerry Grissom, an early childhood special education teacher, received her bachelor’s degree
from Longwood University and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She has
served as a member of the Child Study Committee and has been a two-year participant in
Project Pass (providing for academic and social success of preschoolers with autism). Kerry
has been a presenter at the JMU Content Teacher Academy and participated in VCU’s
evidence-based practices videos, which can be viewed on the VCU website. Currently she
participates on the School Improvement, Safety, and Parent Involvement Committees,
and is chairperson for the preschool department at BMW. Kerry is a job coach for other early
childhood special education teachers in Chesapeake Schools, facilitates an online class
called “Evidence-Based Practices for Preschoolers”, and conducts monthly professional
development meetings with other teachers. Kerry volunteers her time to support Nelly’s
House and a lunch program for children in Haiti, is an active member of River Oak Church,
and enjoys watching college sports, going to the beach, and spending time with her family.
She resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Taylor, and children: Preston, Emilee, and Payton.
Mrs. Grissom has 18 years of teaching experience, 16 of which have been in Chesapeake.
Thomas Brock
Rena B. Wright Primary School
Thomas G. Brock, a physical education and health teacher, received his bachelor’s degree
from Norfolk State University and his master’s degree from Old Dominion University.
He has served as a member of Shape America and VAHPERD (the Virginia Association for
Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance). Thomas enjoys playing soccer and
organizing neighborhood activities for kids. He resides in Chesapeake with his wife,
Monique, and children: Micah, Nina, and Ryder. Mr. Brock has seven years of teaching
experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Marylou DeCamillis
Chesapeake Alternative School
Marylou DeCamillis, a school librarian, received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana
University of Pennsylvania and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She
was the CAS Reading Teacher of the Year for 2014-2015, was awarded a technology grant
from the Chesapeake Public Schools Education Foundation in 2016, and presented at the
Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL) state conference in 2012. Currently
she serves as chairperson for PBIS and ESTAT, and develops and conducts various training
sessions for the staff on PBIS practices and literacy. Marylou is a member of the
Chesapeake Reading Council, VAASL, and the Community Outreach Committee. She is
involved in her neighborhood civic league and her children’s PTSA, is a member of the
Soroptimist International of Hampton Roads organization, and enjoys reading and cooking.

Crestwood Middle School
Geshla Windley, a middle school counselor, received her bachelor’s degree from Virginia
Commonwealth University and her master’s degree from Virginia State University. She
currently serves as guidance director for CWM, is the lead site facilitator of the Safe School
Ambassadors Program, the Junior Student 2 Student Club sponsor, and the contact liaison
for the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy program for middle school girls, which is sponsored
by the Chesapeake-Virginia Beach Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Geshla manages the Falcon Depot School Store, coordinates the All-Stars Leadership
Lunch Groups and the Holiday Angel Tree program, and is a member of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Inc. Geshla serves as president of the Norfolk Chapter of Jack and Jill
of America, Inc. and enjoys singing with the mass choir music ministry at Grove Baptist
Church. She resides in Suffolk with her husband, Darius, her daughter, Simone, and son,
Mason. Mrs. Windley has 20 years of counseling experience, six of which have been in

Deep Creek Middle School
Anthony Otter, a middle school social studies teacher, received both his bachelor’s and
master’s degrees from Old Dominion University. He has coached boys’ basketball and track,
and facilitated the mock election. Currently he sponsors the Chess Club and Safety School
Ambassadors, participates on the INDISTAR team, and serves as United Way coordinator,
Staff Development representative and social studies department chair. Anthony is a member
of the School Disciplinary and Multicultural Committees, and enjoys spending time with
his family, basketball, and traveling. He resides in Virginia Beach with his wife, Jasmine,
and daughter, Issa. Mr. Otter has eight years of teaching experience, all of which have been
in Chesapeake.

Brent Nieter, an eighth-grade US History teacher, received his bachelor’s degree from Liberty
University. He has served as social studies department chair, boys’ track coach, and received
the GBMS Coach of the Year award. Currently Brent sponsors the Running Club, is a
member of the Locally Developed Assessment Committee, serves as site manager for the
Chesapeake Middle School League boy’s track meets, and is a Synergy trainer at GBMS.
Brent is a member of the Technology and GBTV Committees, enjoys running competitively,
and volunteers with Chesapeake Parks and Recreation as well as the Greenbrier Athletic
Association. He resides in Chesapeake with his wife, Kim, and their two children, Blake and
Allison. Mr. Nieter has 16 years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.

Lindsey Kennedy, a special education teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from George
Mason University and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She has served
as a cheering coach, sponsor for Run Like a Greenbrier Girl Club, and team captain for
Susan G. Koman Walk for a Cure. Currently Lindsey participates in the Principal’s Advisory
Committee and the Social Committee, and serves as the special education department
chairperson. Lindsey is a member of Circle in the Bridge (CHKD) and enjoys teaching
children’s church, running, and spending time with her family. She resides in Chesapeake
with her husband, Dustin, and children, Kailey and Nolan. Mrs. Kennedy has 16 years of
teaching experience, 14 of which have been in Chesapeake.

Hickory Middle School
Jane-Marie Wieck, a special education teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Radford
University and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She has received Reading
Teacher of the Year for her school and was nominated for Who’s Who Among American
Teachers. Currently Jane-Marie sponsors the Hickory Middle School National Junior Honor
Society and serves as chairperson for the Child Study Committee, 504 Committee, and
special education department. Jane-Marie is a member of the PTSA, Community Church, and
Crossfit Chesapeake, and enjoys being on the water with her family and friends, working
out, and watching her children play sports. She resides in Chesapeake with her husband,
Ryan, and children: Aidan, Brady, and Cailey. Mrs. Wieck has 20 years of teaching experience,
all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Tionna Green
Indian River Middle School
Tionna Green, an eighth-grade pre-Algebra teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from
Norfolk State University and her master’s degree from Cambridge College in MA. She
has served on the INDISTAR School Improvement Team, as a new teacher mentor, and as
a homebound instructor. Currently Tionna participates on the AVID Team, is an ESTAT
representative, serves as 21st Century Remediation coordinator and special education
department co- chair, and is a presenter for Staff Development on tiered lessons. Tionna is
a member of NEA, VEA, and CEA, and enjoys traveling, reading inspirational books, and
advising youth at her church. She resides in Chesapeake with her daughter, Najlaa. Ms. Green
has 13 years of teaching experience, three of which have been in Chesapeake.
Mary Ellen Stith
Jolliff Middle School
Mary Ellen Stith, an eighth grade US History teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from
the University of North Carolina and her master’s degree from Marymount University.
She has been active in the VEA, served on the Virginia Resolutions Committee, and was
integral in bringing Congress Debate to the Chesapeake middle schools. Currently Mary
sponsors the Jolliff Middle School Debate team and the Jolliff Knitting Club. She is on the
board of the CEA, serves as Political Action Committee chair and Legislative Action chair,
and is her school’s representative for CEA. Mary enjoys kayaking, knitting, sewing, and
traveling. She resides in Portsmouth with her husband, Mr. Randall Trivett. Ms. Stith has
27 years of teaching experience, 14 of which have been in Chesapeake.
Kathie DeLauri
Hugo Owens Middle School
Kathie DeLauri, an eighth-grade math teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Virginia
Tech and her mathematics and Algebra 1 certification through the Virginia Department of
Education. She previously served as cheering coach, SCA sponsor, and PTSA membership
chairperson. Currently Kathie is a member of the Mustang Fest Committee and School
Leadership Council, coordinates the eighth-grade field trip to Washington D.C., and
participates in the school remediation program. She also serves as math department chair
and as a trainer during citywide math in-services. Kathie is a member of the CEA, VEA,
and NEA, and enjoys participating in spin class, church activities, watching the Green Bay,
Packers and attending student extracurricular activities. She resides in Chesapeake with
her son, David; her daughter Amber lives in Richmond. Ms. DeLauri has 17 years of teaching
experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.

Oscar Smith Middle School
FINALIST
Jessica Austin, a middle school Algebra 1 teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Barton
College in North Carolina and her master’s degree from The George Washington University. She
was the recipient of a School Bell Award in 2005, was named Northside Middle School’s
Teacher of the year for 2007, and became a National Board Certified Teacher in 2013. Currently
Jessica participates in Intramural sports, is a member of the Principals Advisory Committee
and the PTA, and serves as the mathematics department chairperson, PBIS coach, and a
cooperating teacher. Jessica is a member of the AVID site team and the Parental Involvement
Committee, and enjoys running in races, reading, and watching her children play sports.
She resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Michael, and her boys: Jonathan, Hunter, and
Kaden. Mrs. Austin has 14 years of teaching experience, nine of which have been in Chesapeake.
Dana L. Darrow
Western Branch Middle School
Dana L. Darrow, a sixth-grade math teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Clarkson
University in New York and her master’s degree from Regent University. She has participated
on the citywide Planning Committee, completed the LEDA program, and received the
Bruin Ambassador and Inspiration Awards. Currently Dana sponsors the LEGO
League, is a new teacher mentor, teacher representative on the PTSA, and serves as
math department chair, Super Bruin team leader, and a Synergy trainer. Dana is chairperson
for the Sixth-grade Orientation Committee, is a member of the Secondary Teacher Staff
Development Council and the Rising Eighth-Grader Committee, and enjoys reading,
boating, and participating in “Save the Bay Day”. She resides in Suffolk with her husband,
Mike, and children: Amanda, Alexandra, and Jonathon. Mrs. Darrow has eight years of
teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Kari Miller
Chesapeake Center for Science and Technology
Kari Miller, a computer systems technology teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from
Western Michigan University and her master’s degree from Troy State University in
Alabama. She has served as a School Improvement and PLC team leader, and SkillsUSA
District 1 chairperson. Currently Kari teaches a dual credit enrollment class with Tidewater
Community College, sponsors SkillsUSA, serves as chair for the Trade and Industry
department, is a trainer for Synergy and CanDo, and is an adjunct professor at Tidewater
Community College. Kari is a member of SkillsUSA and Kappa Delta Pi, and enjoys ham
radio, learning about the healing properties of essential oils, and giving animals forever
homes through Animal Rescue and the SPCA. She resides in Virginia Beach with her two
cats, Angel and Dagger, and her dog, Jeremiah. Ms. Miller has 29 years of teaching experience,
18 of which have been in Chesapeake.
Dwight M. Parker
Deep Creek High School
Dwight M. Parker, a twelfth-grade government teacher, received his bachelor’s degree
from Norfolk State University. He has served as chairperson of the Black History Committee,
coached girls’ softball, won a district championship, and received the honor of the school’s
yearbook dedication twice. Currently Dwight serves on the Black History Committee,
participates in in-house staff development seminars and PLC trainings, and is a member of
the CEA, Tidewater Community College Executive Board, and the Gideon International.
Dwight is active in his church, where he serves on the Trustee Board, and enjoys politics,
watching Jeopardy, and softball. He resides in Chesapeake with his wife, Karen, and their
children: Rachel, Dwight, and Matthew. Mr. Parker has 42 years of teaching experience, all
of which have been in Chesapeake.

Grassfield High School
FINALIST
Alicia White, a high school mathematics teacher, received her bachelor’s degree
from Juniata College in Pennsylvania, her master’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and State University, and her educational specialist degree from Old Dominion
University. She has coached both varsity soccer and field hockey, was chosen PTSA
Volunteer of the Year in 2015, and was granted a Chesapeake Education Foundation
grant to use for her Flipped Classroom curriculum. Currently Alicia is the Student
Activities director, Student Council Association sponsor, and United Way coordinator.
She serves as the Grassfield 10-year Committee chair and a freshman seminar mentor,
and is a member of the Grassfield Planning Council, the Virginia State Advisory
Board, and both the national and state Student Council Advisors Associations. Alicia
enjoys giving back to the community through charity work for CHKD and the Lymphoma
Research Foundation, spending time with her family, and playing soccer. She resides
in Virginia Beach with her husband, Jay, and daughter, Lincoln. Mrs. White has 10
of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Melissa B. Bailey
Great Bridge High School

Melissa Bailey, a social studies teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from Virginia
Wesleyan College and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University. She has
served as a curriculum writer, Debate coach, and Model United Nations sponsor.
Currently Melissa is the Student Council Association advisor, Student Activities
coordinator, Miss/Mr. Great Bridge Pageant director, and founder of the Cats For
A Cause Annual 5k Charity Run. Melissa serves as an adjunct instructor at Tidewater
Community College, is an AP reader for College Board, and is a member of Phi Alpha
Theta. She enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.
Melissa resides in Chesapeake and is the proud aunt of Ethan and Caroline Osborn.
Ms. Bailey has 13 years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Jennifer Naperala
Hickory High School
Jennifer Naperala, a secondary English teacher, received her bachelor’s degree from
the University of Maryland and her master’s degree from Old Dominion University.
She has been a member of Hickory’s ESTAT Committee, designed the reading
remediation curriculum for Hickory’s English department, and developed and
delivered numerous in-service presentations from the department to the city level.
Currently Jennifer co-coaches Hickory’s state-qualifying Scholastic Bowl team, is the
co-sponsor of the Department of Defense’s Student 2 Student program, and serves
as the English department’s remediation coordinator and eleventh-grade PLC team
leader. She is a member of the Martha W. Woolery Chapter of the National Honor
Society Faculty Council and the Great Bridge Society of the Daughters of the
American Revolution. Jennifer is a senior officer for the Virginia State Society of
the Children of the American Revolution, a merit badge counselor and board of
review member for the Tidewater area Boy Scouts, and enjoys time with her family,
planning their next adventure. She resides in Chesapeake with her children: Avery,
Aaron, and Alison. Ms. Naperala has 15 years of teaching experience, all of which
have been in Chesapeake.

Mark Swift, an English teacher, received his bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State University
and is pursuing his master’s degree from Regent University. He has received the Jocelyn P.
Goss Award and the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award. Currently Mark sponsors
Braves for Progress (a mentorship program), writes curriculum for the city of Chesapeake
and Horizon’s Hampton Roads (a community based program serving over 400 students in
over 60 schools throughout Hampton Roads), and serves as the English 10 team leader and
the Multicultural Committee chair. Mr. Swift enjoys playing chess, serving in ministry at
New Life Global Church, and volunteering as a public speaker. He resides in Chesapeake
with his wife, Ashonda, and his children: Mark II, Solomon, Malachi, Kedar, Shaddai, and
Jeremiah. Mr. Swift has 16 years of teaching, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Jahkari H. Taylor

Jahkari Taylor, a special education teacher, received his bachelor’s degree from Norfolk
State University, his master’s degree from Liberty University, and a second master’s from
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. He has served as an expert panelist on the Chesapeake
Public Schools New Beginning Teacher Panel for the last seven consecutive years, was a recipient
of the Iota Phi Lamba Emerald Educator Award, and authored “Overcoming Burnout: Daily
Devotionals to Inspire Teachers.” Currently Jahkari is the sponsor and founder of REEL
Mentors Inc. (a mentorship program aimed to help young men develop in the areas of
character, academics and leadership), is a member of the CEA, and is the Senior Pastor of
The Focus Church in Suffolk. He is CEO of Purpose Pushers LLC., a company that provides
in-service trainings and seminars to help professionals find purpose in their careers. Jahkari
enjoys spending quality time with his family, reading, and engaging in community service
projects with his church. He resides in Suffolk with his wife, Shalise, and their four children.

Elizabeth Williams, a special education teacher, received both her bachelor’s and master’s
degrees from Old Dominion University. She has served as a new teacher mentor, biology
inclusion co-teacher, and WBH SACCS Team subcommittee leader (Security). Currently
Elizabeth serves as the CSC chairperson, geometry inclusion co-teacher, and Reading 180/
System 44 liaison. Elizabeth is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children and the
CEA, and enjoys fishing, following her favorite sports teams, and politics. She resides in
Portsmouth with her husband, Walter, and son, Cadet Walt Neeley-Williams. Mrs. Williams
