The inauguration of new, frequentlyscheduled bus service to midtown Man
hattan is among the Westchester County
bus changes taking effect the week of
Sept. 6, according to R. Raleigh D'Amado,
County Transportation Commissioner.
Route 1 has been extended to Pleasantville, to provide direct service to the
Hudson Shore.
' 'The new Manhattan express service is
perhaps the most significant new route
we've ever instituted,'' Commissioner
D'Amado said. "Public response, in
advance, has been overwhelming. Our
information agents are working overtime
to keep up with the volume of public
inquiries. It's a sure sign of an impending
success story."
The new service, route BxM4C, will run
every 15 minutes during the rush hour,
and hourly through the rest of the day and
evening. It begins in Westchester at
Central Avenue and Cross Street near the
Greenburgh/Whlte Plains border, and
makes 17 stops along Central Avenue, the
last Westchester stop at Central Avenue
and McLean Avenue in Yonkers. Then it
continues into New York City on the
Major Deegan Expressway, with some
trips making a stop at 138 Street at the
Major Deegan exit ramp. The buses run
into Manhattan on Fifth Avenue, making
stops from 85th Street to 23rd Street.
Northbound, the express buses will run on
Madison Avenue, stopping from 28th
Street to 84th Street. Southbound, the first
bus leaves Cross Street at 6:00 a.m., and
the last one at night will be at 11:00 p.m.
Northbound service from Manhattan
runs until 12:15 a.m. Route BxM4C will
run Monday through Saturday, but with a
lighter level of service on Saturdays.
Service will begin Tuesday, September 7.
The one-way fare between Westchester
and Manhattan is $3.00.
Previously planned changes in the
operation of route 29, a once-a-day
express bus between Tarrytown and the
East Side of Manhattan, are being held in
