Instructions for Using ABeka ESL Level Three
R
Reading—Since level three is an advanced level, the purpose of reading is to assist the
student in continued development of his reading skills. As the instructor reads, students
should listen carefully for speed and pronunciation. Time should be taken during and
after every lesson for students to read the pages aloud independently. It will be helpful
to watch each lesson again for extra practice and reinforcement. Access reading pages
on the website.
Language—The purpose of language is to understand the structure of the English
language. Students will continue learning about the different parts of speech, focus
ing particularly on correct verb usage and subject and verb agreement. Students will
also learn common English expressions that native English speakers frequently use in
conversations. Students should listen carefully and participate during each lesson. It
will be helpful to watch each lesson again for extra practice and reinforcement. Access
language exercises on the website.
Vocabulary—The purpose of vocabulary is to learn common roots, prefixes, and suf
fixes that are found in many English words. Learning roots, prefixes, and suffixes will
help the student to be able to learn more English words independently. Participation
during each lesson is essential in broadening one’s English vocabulary. It is important to
listen carefully to the instructor’s pronunciation. It will be helpful to watch each lesson
again and say the words along with the instructor. This will provide extra practice and
reinforcement. Students will also listen to conversation lessons in order to hear vocabu
lary words used in daily conversations.
