The Vision Newsletter of First Baptist Church April 3, 2017 Come Celebrate with us ~April 16~ Worship Times 8:00a.m. or 10:30a.m. Sunday School at 9:15a.m. Adult Choir Worship Celebration and Observance of the Lord’s Supper April 9 – 6:30pm Reasons you don’t want to miss this: 1) We will be exalting the name of the Lord 2) This will prepare us for the upcoming Easter celebration. 3) God inhabits the praise of His people – His people will be praising His name extra this night! 4) We will be observing the Lord’s Supper, which is one of the sacraments of church. 5) It will encourage your spirit and heart. 6) Music led by our adult choir is always an amazing time! 7) There is something in worshipping God in a corporate setting that can’t be duplicated by just sitting at home. 8) You’ll be with the family of God. 9) God wants to remind you how much He loves you and desires your praise and time. 10) God wants your attention – will you give it Him? I have a confession to make. I LOVE SUNDAY SCHOOL! To this day, I can still close my eyes and see Al Curb or Junior Evans or Mrs. Jackson, just to name a few, standing before a group of ornery teenagers (me being one of them) teaching us the truths of God’s Word. They did this Sunday after Sunday with great patience and grace. During my forty years in the ministry, I have watched as hundreds of others have done the same. The impact of the Sunday School teacher often goes unrecognized. In fact, because our society is changing, some have suggested the age of the Sunday School is past. But I believe the future of Sunday School is bright, and God will continue to use the Sunday School as the evangelistic and educational arm of the church. Especially when we understand the purpose of Sunday School. In a recent survey asked Sunday School leaders, “What is the purpose of Sunday School?” The top three answers were: Bible Study, Fellowship, and Ministry. Great answers, but all of them are wrong answers. You see, the purpose of Sunday School is to assist the church in carrying out its mission of making disciples all over the world. Colossians 1:13 (HCSB) states, “He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son He loves.” Notice the word “rescue”. Your Sunday School class, whether it is a senior adult class or a preschool class, is part of the greatest rescue mission in the world. We are part of our Master’s rescue mission to save lost and perishing souls from a Christ-less eternity and bring them into a personal relationship with Jesus. Knowing and understanding your purpose enables you to prioritize what you are doing. Knowing your purpose aids, you in evaluating how you are doing. Knowing your purpose gives direction to where you are going.
