News from the Pattonville School District Board of Education
Pattonville earns another clean audit by outside firm
Audit shows Pattonville
is fairly representing its
financial statements and
maintaining good controls
over district finances
The Pattonville School District received another clean bill of health in its
annual audit by an independent auditing firm, Schowalter and Jabouri.
Randy McArthur, a member of Pattonville’s audit committee, was at the
board meeting on May 26 and told the board the district received an “unqualified report.” The unqualified report is the best a district can receive
and means the district is fairly presenting its financial statements and
maintaining good internal controls over district finances.
For the first time, the district worked with a district-level audit committee to complete the auditing review. The committee consists of two
members of the Board of Education, as well as one other community
member who is knowledgeable about the district’s operations, finances,
policies and procedures. The committee is empowered by the Board of
Education to review all district practices, policies and procedures and
to create a rigorous system of internal control to protect the district,
its assets and its people. The committee works with the district’s chief
financial officer, Ron Orr, meets with the district’s external auditors and
reports at least once a year to the Board of Education to discuss its findings and recommendations.
New assistant principal for Holman named
The Board of Education on May 26 approved the selection of Tarah Fowler as the new assistant principal of Holman Middle School. She will begin
her new role on July 1. Fowler is currently a teacher at Frontier Middle
School in the Wentzville School District. She holds a bachelor’s degree
in criminal justice from Missouri State University, a master’s in teaching
from Lindenwood University and a master’s in educational administration,
also from Lindenwood.

Pattonville assists with “Click It or Ticket”
Pattonville High School was invited to participate in the May 14 joint news conference with the Missouri Department of Transportation and Illinois Department of Transportation as they launched their “Click
It or Ticket” campaign to reinforce the importance of buckling up while on the road. Law enforcement
officials from both states were on hand to discuss why there is a strong reinforcement in May for motorists to wear their safety belts. Pattonville sophomore Sam Swinea spoke at the news conference about how
a safety belt saved his life during an automobile crash. He was accompanied to the news conference by
Pattonville driver’s education teachers Pete Barrett, Mark Hahn and Tom Iffrig. Swinea was part of the
news coverage on Fox Channel 2 and KMOX. Last year, Pattonville High School was recognized with a
regional and state award for its participation in a seat belt awareness program.
Maryland Heights recognition
The city of Maryland Heights recently presented Holman Middle School gifted students with a proclamation honoring their first-place win in the regional Stockmarket Game. Chris Jeck, Taylor Garofalo,
and Kevin Murillo placed first in their region and 12th out of 1,408 teams in the state. The team of Laura
Cleaver-Horn, Roger Netherton and Phillip Scherer also placed second in their region and 47th overall.
Playground Dedication
Thanks to the family of former Rose Acres Elementary
kindergarten teacher Roseann Melville for its generous
donation, which resulted in a renovation to the kindergarten
and early childhood playground at the school. The school
dedicated the playground in her memory on May 26. After
Mrs. Melville passed away, her husband made a donation
to the school that was matched by Boeing. The playground
was renovated combining his donation with funding from a
Pattonville bond issue and donations from the Rose Acres
PTA.

Education Partnership (CEP). Through the TEAMS (To Encourage Appreciation of Myself and School) program, older students work with younger students to build
a sense of community. Each month, lessons during TEAMS meetings focus on a different character education word, such as honesty, perseverance and self control.
Over 130 schools and districts from the United States, Canada and Mexico received 155 awards for
“Promising Practices” in character education. The CEP gives the annual awards for unique and specific
exemplary practices that encourage the ethical, social, and academic growth of K–12 students through
character education. By publicizing these awards, CEP hopes to recognize educators for their efforts and to
encourage others to learn from and even replicate these successful initiatives.

Integrated Teachers
Sixty-six Pattonville teachers received certificates during Pattonville’s recent Integrator
Awards Night for completing the district’s advanced technology training program. The training program is designed to help educators more
fully integrate technology in ways that impact
student achievement. Teachers completed training and had to create lesson units, along with
iMovies or Web sites to support their lessons, in
order to complete the training. Five teachers were
honored for creating units that received the highest scores from a judging panel. They included:
“First Americans,” by Sandy Brewer at Parkwood
Elementary, “Fiction Story Elements” by Dana
Heidbreder at Remington Traditional School,
“Ecosystems” by Jennifer Calva at Holman Middle School, “Romanesque and Gothic Cathedrals
in France” by Judith Chabot at Pattonville High
School, and “Train Travel in Germany” by Steph
Frerker at Pattonville High School.

the National Merit Scholarship Corporation on May 27. Chou is one of more than
2,800 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from
among finalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend
their institution. Chou plans on studying mechanical engineering.
