A Journey Through the New Categories Presented by: Ann Shofner, State Advisory Committee Jana Riggins, UIL Director Prose Category A: Inspiring My Journey • What is each performer’s definition of what a hero/heroine/survivor is: – Famous Historical Figures? – People Overcoming Obstacles? – People They Admire? – People they Feel an Emotional Attachment to? Prose Category A: Inspiring My Journey • What is each performer’s definition of inspiration? – Wealth? – Wisdom? – Morality? – Athleticism? – Invention? Prose Category A: Inspiring My Journey • The Introduction Should Establish: – Why this hero/heroine/survivor inspires the performer? – What qualities are present in this hero/heroine/survivor? Prose Category A: Inspiring My Journey • Documentation: – Hard Copy – Photocopy of Original Source – Library of Congress cataloguing information – If the story comes from a collection, please provide a copy of the table of contents and a copy of the selection Prose Category B: Expanding the Journey • Variety of Literature – Minimum of Two/Maximum of Four Sources – Majority of Program Must be Prose in Nature – ONE SOURCE may include: • • • • • Movie Script Documentary Television Show or Television Movie Radio Show Play Prose Category B: Expanding the Journey • Variety of Literature Not Allowed: – Poetry – Song Lyrics – Musicals – Plays Written in Verse – Novels Written in Verse Prose Category B: Expanding the Journey • Cool Things That You and Your Kids Can Do: – This category may be woven – Original Transitions – Use Anonymous Authors – Think a MASH-UP of literature about the impact of The Mary Tyler Moore Show on the Women’s Liberation Movement. Prose Category B: Expanding the Journey • Documentation – A list of sources with authors and/or screenwriters (list each type of literature used) *make extra copies for each judge for their convenience in filling out the ballot – No proof of publication required Poetry Category A: Journey Through Time • Exploring a Decade or Social Movement – The Great Depression – Women’s Liberation – Arab Spring – Chicano Movement – Civil Rights Poetry Category A: Journey Through Time • Sony Lyrics may be used as transitions only, unless published as poetry. • The program may be woven or may incorporate verbal and/or nonverbal transitions. • Co-authors or anonymous works are permissible. Poetry Category B: Journey With Poets • Material found on the website that ARE NOT ALLOWED: – Blogs, Essays, Prose – Any Non-Poetic Material found on the website or Non-Poetic Material written by that author Poetry Category B: Journey With Poets • Documentation: – Provide a copy of the poet’s listing on PoetryFoundation.org with the URL downloaded. – Easy way to do this is use the Poet’s Biographical page from the PoetryFoundation.org website. Introductions have Meaning in the New Categories! • Prose – Category A – Define your idea of a hero/heroine/survivor – What are the inspirational qualities they exemplify for YOU personally? How does your selection reflect these qualifies? Introductions • Prose – Category B – State the TYPES of literature you are using and include titles/authors of each type. – Introduce your THEME & its significance. Introductions • Poetry – Category A – Identify the DECADE, SOCIAL or POLITICAL MOVEMENT you have chosen to feature. – Discuss the SIGNIFICANCE of that decade or movement.
