Better With Age
A Celebrity Among Us
A sharper insight and
perspective on life,
increased compassion for
others, and the confidence
and freedom to be your
true self—these are just a
few of the ways that getting
older actually means
getting better, according to
seniors quoted by Country
Living magazine.
Private Mary Elizabeth

the Women’s Army Corps in
1944. She was assigned to
VIP Chauffeur to transport
dignitaries to and from Los
Alamos National Laboratory
to Sante Fe, New Mexico.
She drove physicists,
chemists, generals,
physicians, & Paul Tibbets,
who dropped the bomb, and
even Robert Oppenheimer,
the “Father of the Atomic
Bomb.” They were informed
not to speak to anyone
about the strange noises,
explosives, etc. The very

bomb. FBI agents visited
them daily. When any sort of
bomb was experimented in
the New Mexico desert, their
only protection was a rather
shallow sand bunker! The
heat was so intense the
sand crystals would melt,
change colors and adhere in
unusual forms. Mary later
got her pilot license and
became a Civil Air Patrol
Lieutenant. Years later, she
attended the Laboratory
Institute of Fashion

City and worked for Sears
and Roebuck for 29 years.
Mary now resides here at
Fellowship Square and leads
our swim class during the
warm months.

Tune Up Your
Activities
With Jazz
Before you cast
on for a knitting
project or take a
swing at your golf
putting, cue up
some jazz music
to accompany
you. Of all the
many musical
genres, jazz has
been shown to be
the most effective
at enhancing the
fine motor skills
used in activities
such as golf
putting, knitting,
sewing and
painting.
Researchers say
the music’s
calming effect can
improve
performance skills
and frees the mind
to focus on
creativity.
We have choices for exercising
to fit in to your schedule and
preference. Are you

1. Better Relationships
Happiness, it turns out, really is
contagious. Having a positive
attitude has been known to
improve interpersonal
relationships and even affect
people who are several degrees
removed from our social circles.
And when we cultivate deep
personal relationships with
friends, family, and neighbors, we
enjoy the safety of others who
care as well as plenty of
emotional positive reinforcement.
2. Less Stress
When we laugh, we exercise
important muscle groups and
lower our stress levels. One of the
most common explanations for
the longevity effects of positivity
is that positive people are simply
not as stressed out. Stress is
known to trigger internal
inflammation, which speeds up
the aging process. Less stress
means less inflammation, which
can result in a longer life.
3. Healthier Lifestyles
People who see the glass
half-full are more likely to take
measures toward preserving their
own physical well-being.
If they value life, they do what
they can to preserve, extend, and
enhance their lives with
exercise and healthy choices.

Grey Mountain by John Grisham
Book Nook by Colleen Clampitt
This book was on the best sellers list for over a
year. It is the story of how big money can buy
anything they want and do not care who they
hurt.
Samantha Rofer is a lawyer who works on Wall
Street for a large firm. She is offered a job as a
Legal Aid in a small town in Virginia. It is a
downgrade for her, but she likes the challenge.
The new job takes Samantha into a murky and
dangerous world of coal mining. They break all
rules and regulations. Can Samantha save the
day? Finding the evidence to shut them down is
not an easy task. “When you sue a coal company
in Appalachia, you can’t always count on an
unbiased jury.” Still, the reader can’t help but feel
that we’ve been here before.
I enjoyed this book. It is in the fiction section in
large print.
January 2nd was a very interesting day at
Fellowship Square. Barbara Gilbert’s son, Jeff,
and his fiancé, Mary Ann, were to be married by
a Justice of the Peace. It was a holiday, but they
had an appointment at 11am. The witnesses,
Barbara and Colleen Clampitt showed up half an
hour early. They waited an hour and the office
did not open. Mary Ann was to fly out that
afternoon. Barbara remembered we have a
retired Pastor named Joel Hurley living with us.
A call was made, and after a few minutes, he
returned the call and agreed to perform the
service, even though it had been a long time
since he had performed one. The ceremony was
performed in the gazebo area. Donna Hurley
performed the wedding march. God did not like
the original plan and in his wonderful way,
changed it.
