We all have the duty to do good.
dear friends
Dear Friends in Christ,
Serving the neediest among us is a vital function of the Church. Catholic Charities, Diocese
of Joliet helps fulfill this important role in our community.
Please take a moment to read through this Annual Report and take note of the many
generous individuals, such as yourself, who make the work of Catholic Charities possible.
Without your support, our poor and vulnerable brothers and sisters would be unable to
receive the help and inspiration that they need to become self-sufficient.
Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon
Bishop of Joliet
I express my gratitude to you for helping Catholic Charities do God’s work within the
Diocese of Joliet.
May the Lord bless you and those who are dear to you.
Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon
Bishop of Joliet
Among us, who is above must be in service of others.
This doesn’t mean we have to wash each other’s feet every day,
but we must help one another.

Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,
Each year provides new opportunities to reach out to and better serve those in our community suffering from poverty,
unemployment, loneliness, homelessness, and emotional pain. We are constantly reevaluating the needs that exist within
the Diocese of Joliet and adjusting our programs accordingly. Fiscal year 2014 was no exception and we began several
exciting new ventures.
Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago were awarded a $1.5 million grant
from the Veterans Administration to jointly provide services to homeless veterans and those in danger of becoming
homeless. The need among veterans is great and we quickly began growing our Supportive Services for Veteran Families
(SSVF) program. This program provides case management, vocational counseling, employment assistance, educational
assistance, budgeting assistance, housing counseling and support, daily living counseling, linkage to behavioral health
services and linkage to VA benefits or additional veteran services available in the community. SSVF temporary financial
assistance can help with rental arrearages, security deposits, utility assistance or deposits and moving costs.
We were blessed when the National Hookup of Black Women and private donor Nance Bruss
recognized that our Head Start sites could benefit from a lending library. Through their
generosity, we now have treasured libraries at all five of our Head Start sites.
Our Counseling Department became aware that our parish schools within the Diocese
needed counseling services for their students and began providing counselors in eleven
area Catholic schools. This program continues to grow.
These are just a few of the many accomplishments that Catholic Charities achieved in
fiscal year 2014. You will read about many more achievements and honors throughout
the pages of this report.
As always, thank you for your support and I look forward to another great year ahead!
Blessings,
Glenn Van Cura

Alternative Housing Programs
DuPage, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, Kankakee, Kendall & Will Counties
Providing a variety of housing programs for individuals and families
who are homeless or at-risk, including transitional housing, permanent
supportive housing and more. These programs are designed to maximize
a family’s self-sufficiency.
TRANSITIONAL HOUSING
Rebecca struggled through a heartbreaking divorce and worked hard
as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) to support her son as a single
mother. This small family was self-sufficient until Rebecca was forced to
stop working due to complications from diabetes, which eventually led
to the amputation of both of her legs. After surgery, Rebecca became
homeless when she was unable to work.
After a stay at Catholic Charities’ Hope House homeless shelter in
DuPage County, Rebecca and her son moved into a transitional housing
apartment in a quiet neighborhood, where the young man quickly made
lots of friends. Upon the advice of her case manager, Rebecca enrolled
in Catholic Charities’ Out of Poverty classes, which she found extremely
helpful and inspirational.
Today, Rebecca is taking classes and working toward earning her
G.E.D. She continues to heal physically and is learning to walk with
prosthetics. Rebecca also makes better food choices to control her
diabetes. “From the bottom of my heart, I’m so grateful to Catholic
Charities,” Rebecca said. “The agency has been a blessing in my
own life… and for so many others.”

Daybreak Center
Will, Grundy & Kendall Counties

provides professional case management and robust wraparound services
such as employment programs that promote self-sufficiency.
Shepherd’s Table
Feeding all members of the community who are hungry and unable to
provide for themselves by offering a free mid-day meal. Shepherd’s Table
is also used as a warming and cooling center during extreme weather.
D AY B R E A K C E N T E R
After 15 years as a heroin addict, 52 year-old Douglas hit an all-time
low when he attempted suicide after being unable to purchase drugs.
Shortly thereafter, Douglas found himself at Catholic Charities’ Daybreak
Center and began talking to a case manager about his journey and how
hard he was working to stay sober. Douglas was given the opportunity
to move from the emergency shelter into New Beginnings, a permanent
supportive housing program for chronically homeless men at Daybreak
Center. To date, Doug remains clean and sober and is thankful for this
opportunity.
Douglas knows that he still has a long road in front of him, but he
reports that it’s becoming easier to ignore temptations. He’s fully aware
that the stakes are higher than ever. “No more room to fail,” he says.
And Douglas has a message for anyone else struggling with addiction,
“If Daybreak Center can help me, they can help anyone.”

Brian was a handsome 40 year-old
man who had a magnetic personality,
many friends, and a good job. His family
adored him.
On June 4, 2013, Brian lost his life to
suicide.
When Brian died, he left behind a
shocked and devastated family.
Shortly after Brian passed away, his
family learned about Catholic Charities
LOSS Program. LOSS, (Loving Outreach
to Survivors of Suicide) is a free, nondenominational program that supports
individuals who are grieving the loss of
a loved one by suicide.
Brian’s parents and his sister Amy
decided to attend a LOSS meeting and
immediately found great comfort in
the supportive environment. They now
attend LOSS meetings each month.
Although the grief is still very painful, this
resilient family has found comfort in the
program and continues to heal.

Supportive Services for Veteran’s Families
DuPage, Grundy, Iroquois, Kankakee, Kendall & Will Counties
Assisting veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Richard, a 58 year-old veteran, was devastated when he learned that he
would be evicted from his apartment. “I was a wreck,” he said. “I’d never
been in this situation before.”
He wasn’t immediately certain where to turn for help. However, after
calling Catholic Charities, he was connected with the Supportive
Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. Richard’s case manager
located a veteran’s transitional housing program in Joliet for which
Richard was eligible and prevented him from becoming homeless.
Richard is happy with his living situation, but eager to live independently again. He is working hard to regain self-sufficiency. Although
the past year has been difficult, Richard is happy for a fresh start and
has a positive attitude about his future. “I’m thankful for what I’ve got,”
he explained. “If it wasn’t for this program, who knows where I’d be.”

Hope House
DuPage County
Providing housing and supportive services to individuals and families who
are homeless often due to divorce, job loss or depleted savings. During
a temporary, short stay, participants work toward securing employment
and permanent housing. Hope House also provides the only 24-hour crisis
hotline to assist in the single point of entry process for the homeless services
continuum in DuPage County.
Everything in Albert’s life fell apart when his fiancé passed away quickly
and unexpectedly. He tried to distract himself with work, but suffered a
back injury that prevented him from performing his job functions and
eventually he became unemployed.
Without an income, Albert was unable to pay his rent and he became
homeless for the first time in his life. Albert was relieved when he was
accepted into Catholic Charities’ Hope House homeless shelter.
“I never dreamt that I would be in this situation,” he revealed. As Albert
attended meetings at Hope House and began making job contacts, he
realized that this was a special opportunity for a fresh start.
Today, Albert has a job and has transitioned back into self-sufficiency.
He’s feeling optimistic about his life and is thankful for his experience at
Hope House. He describes it as a wonderful program and said, “There’s
nothing better than being given the chance to start over.”

setting. Expectant mothers receive prenatal and post-partum education and assistance in preparing their home for their baby’s arrival.
Counseling and other mental health services are provided as needed to children and families. Family engagement is encouraged and
supported. Family advocates work directly with families to provide supportive services such as financial planning and goal setting and
assist in securing resources for job searches for employment, continued education, and ESL or GED in order for families to become

Denisha felt overwhelmed when she found out that she was expecting her second child. She
lives in a neighborhood where it is not uncommon to hear gunshots and where mothers keep
their children indoors because it’s unsafe to play outside. Her dreams of escaping poverty
felt like they were slipping away. When she explained her concerns to staff at the Catholic
Charities’ Head Start center where her son attended school, they referred her to Catholic
Charities’ Expectant Mothers Initiative for guidance and help.
Her Expectant Mothers case manager helped Denisha build her confidence. The case manager
made regular visits to Denisha’s home and the two talked about the pregnancy and whatever
else was on Denisha’s mind. “It was very supportive,” said Denisha. “I just needed someone to
talk to.”
Shortly thereafter, Denisha gave birth to a healthy baby girl who she named Cabriah. Today,
Denisha is more confident. She is focused on moving to a safer neighborhood where her
children can play outdoors and enjoy the carefree childhood they deserve. She is also planning
to return to community college in the spring to continue to work toward getting her degree.

Charlotte has endured a rough couple of years. She lives alone in a
small house in Joliet where chronic health problems have kept this
senior homebound. After raising her family and having a successful
career, Charlotte had trouble adjusting to her new life. “I became so
lonely,” she said.
A few towns over, Karen was facing challenges of her own. She’d been
laid off from her job and was struggling with unemployment. Karen
discovered Catholic Charities’ Senior Companion program and decided
to become a volunteer with the program.
After the pair was connected by Catholic Charities, Karen began visiting
Charlotte twice each week for a few hours each time. The women have
become close friends. They spend hours chatting and enjoying one
another’s company. “Karen is more than a senior companion,” Charlotte
said, “She’s a great friend.”
