SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
During its colorful 150-year history, Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency, the oldest company of
private investigators in the United States, pursued some of the nation’s most notorious criminals. Allan
Pinkerton founded the company in the 1850s. One of his first contracts was to provide protective services for
the Illinois Central Railroad, whose legal counsel was Abraham Lincoln. After Lincoln became president in
1861, Pinkerton formed a secret service to protect the president and to provide intelligence for the Union
Army. After the Civil War, Pinkerton’s sons, Robert and William, expanded the company. By the early
twentieth century, the Pinkertons had several thousand employees and as many clients and operated offices
throughout the United States. Robert Pinkerton died in 1907, and William ran the company alone until his
own death in 1923. Robert’s son Allan oversaw operations until his death in 1930, at which point Robert A.
Pinkerton II, great-grandson of the founder, led the company through the 1960s.
Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency, Part B: Criminal Case File, Series 3: “K”–”N” is organized
alphabetically by the name of the case or criminal. Series 3 consists of cases primarily dating from the 1890s
to 1920s, but there are documents from 1869 through to 1961. The files record on crimes committed across
the country including Illinois, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, as well as international
crimes in Europe, including significant material on Belgium. Members of the Pinkerton family are the
primary correspondents in the collection, but it was impossible to identify the subjects consistently because
the sons’ names were never modified by II or Jr. Other frequent correspondents include agency officials and
agents Seymour Beutler, Francis P. Dimaio, W. F. Wagner, George D. Bangs, Herbert S. Mosher, Standish L.
Stiles, and David C. Thornhill, as well as occasional letters from criminals and informants. (Most informants
use aliases ending in -stone, while Pinkerton operatives use aliases ending in -wood.) This series is especially
rich in informant correspondence and information.
At 5:00 a.m. on February 23, 1929, a delivery man making his rounds in Cranford, New Jersey, came
across the body of a woman lying in the road. The woman had been brutally murdered—shot in the head and
then set on fire after the murderer had poured gasoline over her body. According to documents in the
Pinkerton's National Detective Agency files, three days later, on February 26, 1929, Union County, New
Jersey, detectives told Pinkerton agent W. F. Wagner about the murder. Wagner immediately joined the
investigation, filing daily reports on his activities in the case. Wagner’s reports give the researcher an
indication of the thoroughness with which Pinkerton agents went about their business.
The first step was to identify the victim. In order to do this, Wagner contacted the manufacturer of the
shoes worn by the victim. He asked the manufacturer if it had any records regarding sales in the vicinity of
Cranford. Based on an anonymous letter originally sent to a New York City police detective, Wagner at first
believed that the victim was Grace Jones, whose maiden name was Grace Villemonte. Wagner interviewed
work colleagues and friends of Villemonte in New York and New Jersey. He also went to the New York City
Municipal Civil Service Commission to compare Villemonte’s fingerprints with those of the victim. After
learning that Villemonte had probably moved to Colorado, Wagner contacted Pinkerton detectives in
Denver, Colorado, who were able to locate Villemonte in Denver.
For the next five weeks, Wagner’s investigation made little or no progress. It was not until April 9, 1929,
when Wagner received a telegram from the Chief of Police of Greenville, Pennsylvania, stating that the
description of the victim matched that of Mildred Mowry, that he began to make some progress. Wagner
v
immediately shifted the focus of his investigation, meeting with two residents of Greenville who brought him
a bundle of letters that had been sent to Mowry by a man named Richard M. Campbell. Amazingly, just two
days after receiving the tip, Elizabeth, New Jersey police, with Wagner looking on, arrested Richard Henry
Campbell. Under Wagner’s questioning on the evening of April 11, Campbell confessed to the murder.
Following Campbell’s confession, Wagner worked for the next two months assembling the case against
Campbell. Wagner determined that Richard M. Campbell was actually Henry Campbell Close, a man who had
previously served prison terms in San Francisco and New York City for forgery. Although Close was married,
he placed personal ads in publications to attract women like Mildred Mowry, a widow with money in the
bank. The ad he placed in Friendship Magazine is transcribed in the Pinkerton files (Reel 9, Frame 0697).
In building the case against Henry Campbell Close, Wagner again covered all the details. He attempted,
for example, to find the car wash where Close had washed the car after he committed the murder, the can
that contained the gasoline Close had used on his victim, and information about where Close had been living
and his activities around the time of the murder. In addition to assembling the necessary evidence to win the
vi
case, Wagner was also trying to establish that Close was not insane at the time he committed the murder. All
of Wagner’s activities are described in his detailed reports to his manager at the Pinkerton’s New York office.
The prosecution presented its case against Close on June 10 and 11, 1929, and the defense concluded its case
on June 12. On June 13, 1929, Henry Campbell Close was found guilty and sentenced to be electrocuted
during the week of July 15, 1929. Following the successful conclusion of the case, Wagner’s reports indicate
that he was moving on to other investigations.
Series 3 of the Criminal Case File of Pinkerton's National Detective Agency consists of the files
beginning with the letters “K” through “N.” This installment includes files on two of the most famous cases
in the long and colorful history of the Pinkerton’s: the work of agent James McParland in infiltrating the
Molly Maguires, and Allan Pinkerton’s role in thwarting the 1861 assassination plot against Abraham Lincoln.
The Molly Maguires is the name associated with a secret group that organized in the coal region of
Pennsylvania in the 1860s and 1870s. According to essays in the collection, the Molly Maguires first organized
in Ireland in response to the Irish potato famine of the 1840s. The group’s purpose at this time was to
distribute food to people in need by confronting local storekeepers who they believed had food on hand. A
member of the organization would go to local storekeepers dressed as a mother begging for food for her
children. This person was referred to as “Molly.”
The potato famine led to a massive migration out of Ireland, with many Irish coming to the United
States. Beginning in the 1860s and 1870s, labor organizations in the coal region of Pennsylvania began to
fight for better wages and working conditions as well as for political power. Violence and intimidation
allegedly became part of the strategy employed by the one of those organizations, the Molly Maguires.
In 1873, after a request for help from Franklin B. Gowen, president of the Philadelphia and Reading
Railroad, and the Philadelphia Reading Coal and Iron Company, Allan Pinkerton assigned Pinkerton agent
James McParland to the case. According to documents in Series 3, over the next two-plus years, McParland
succeeded in infiltrating the Molly Maguires. In 1876 and 1877, based on evidence collected by McParland,
over 20 men were convicted and hanged for their involvement in murders.
The file on the Molly Maguires in this collection consists of an 1875 report by James McParland, a typed
copy of a letter from McParland to Allan Pinkerton written in 1873, extracts from the notebook of Pinkerton
agent Robert J. Linden, newspaper clippings from the 1870s, correspondence from 1914 through 1951
looking back on the case, and an agency history and other essays that were written in the 1940s. While the
most recent and authoritative book on the Molly Maguires argues that many of the men convicted were
probably innocent and that, overall, the trials were a travesty, the Molly Maguire file in this collection offers
an important story on life in the coal region of Pennsylvania in the nineteenth century, as well as many
insights into the tactics of Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency.
The other well-known case in this portion of the Criminal Case File covers Allan Pinkerton’s role in
thwarting the 1861 assassination plot targeting Abraham Lincoln as Lincoln made his way from Springfield,
Illinois, to Washington, D.C. The file on this plot consists primarily of correspondence and newspaper
clippings relating to Pinkerton’s role in getting Lincoln safely to the nation’s capital. Notable is a November
3, 1867, letter from attorney and Illinois Republican Party leader Norman B. Judd regarding his memory of
the 1861 train trip, as well an 1868 letter from Allan Pinkerton that appeared in the Chicago Times on January
18, 1868. In that letter, Pinkerton, describing why few knew of his role in the dramatic 1861 trip, wrote
“[John A. Kennedy] did not know of my connection with the passage of Mr. Lincoln, nor was it my intention
that he should know of it. Secrecy is the one thing most necessary to the success of a detective, and when a
secret is to be kept, the fewer who know of it the better” (Reel 3, Frame 0690).
The largest single case file in Series 3 covers the gang led by the bank robber Joseph Killoran. Individual
folders within the Killoran file cover twenty-seven different bank robberies he was involved in between 1883
vii
and 1906. In the United States, this included robberies in Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky,
Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. From 1903 to 1906, he also committed
robberies in Vienna, Austria; Brussels, Belgium; and Paris. The file on Joseph Killoran also contains a section
of documents on twenty-four individuals that the Pinkerton’s believed had worked with him in some of the
robberies. Toward the end of his life, disabled after his leg was amputated, Killoran wrote to the Pinkertons
hoping for employment. “If I can aid you in getting any legitimate employment, it will be a pleasure for me
to do so” wrote William A. Pinkerton (Reel 2, Frame 0467), but it was difficult to find security work
appropriate for an older man with limited mobility. Killoran returned to a life of crime in Europe, ultimately
ending his life in Belgium while in police custody on suspicion of bank robbery.
Some of the most intriguing cases in Series 3 are not in the largest files or involve the most famous
criminals. Take for example the account of Mildred Mowry who was murdered by the man with whom she
sought to build a new life. These cases are personal dramas, the plotlines ready-made for True Detective
Mysteries, the magazine that published many accounts of Pinkerton cases in the 1940s. The collection opens
with such a case, the murder for hire of Daniel Kaber, commissioned by his wife, step-daughter, and motherin-law. In the middle of the night on July 18, 1919, Kaber was stabbed repeatedly by Salvatore Cala and
Venturino Pisselli in the bedroom of his Cleveland, Ohio, home. His wife, Eva, had arranged to be away, and
her young daughter Marion McArdle had a friend over for the night. The friend would later recall how
Marion prevented her from going to Daniel Kaber when they first heard his moans, and also how a few days
earlier Marion suddenly began loudly playing the piano while her mother spoke with some unfamiliar men.
Another friend of the Kaber family would play a critical role in unraveling the plot to kill Daniel Kaber,
and bringing Eva Kaber to trial. After becoming convinced that the women in Kaber’s family were behind
the murder, the Pinkertons reviewed Eva Kaber’s friends looking for a woman they might recruit to go
undercover. They settled on Ethel Berman, whose husband was a good friend of the dead man. Ethel was
sent to New York for a crash course in detective work, spending days running through simulations of sticky
situations she might find herself in during the course of her investigation. After returning to Cleveland, Ethel
succeeded in purloining a letter from Eva to Marion in which she referred to being unable to pay her
husband’s killers for their work. Eva Kaber was convicted and died in prison, her mother was not charged
due to insufficient evidence, and Marion McArdle was acquitted on the grounds that she was intimidated by
her mother into cooperating with the scheme.
Avis Linnell was also killed by the person supposed to love her most. A cheerful young music student in
Boston, Massachusetts, Avis concluded a normal school day in 1911 by entering her bathroom, disrobing,
and consuming enough cyanide to kill twelve people. Her family did not accept the death as a suicide, and
waged their own investigation, leading to Clarence V. T. Richeson, a Baptist minister to whom she was
engaged. As Richeson eventually confessed, he sent the poison to Avis, telling her it would induce an
abortion. He died in the electric chair in 1912.
The other case files in Series 3 focus on bank robbers and train robbers. The bank robbers covered in
Series 3 include George Leonidas, Sophie Lyons, Frank McCoy, Rufus Minor, Langdon Moore, and Dan
Noble. Train robbers in this series are A. E. “Old Bill” Miner and Sherman W. Morris, as well as a file on
Merchants Union Express Company regarding a robbery committed by Charles Bullard and Isaac Marsh on
the Hudson River Railroad.
Series 3 of the Criminal Case file contains files on thirty different cases. For researchers in criminology,
sociology, the history of law enforcement, and labor relations, this installment of records should provide
many interesting research opportunities. Scholars may be interested in other collections filmed by LexisNexis

ome of the most intriguing cases in Series 3 of the Pinkerton National Detective
Agency are not in the largest files or involve the most famous criminals. Take for
example the account of Mildred Mowry, who was murdered by the man with
whom she sought to build a new life. These cases are personal dramas, the
plotlines ready-made for True Detective Mysteries, the magazine that published many accounts
of Pinkerton cases in the 1940s. The collection opens with such a case, the murder for hire
of Daniel Kaber, commissioned by his wife, step-daughter, and mother-in-law. In the
middle of the night on July 18, 1919, Kaber was stabbed repeatedly by Salvatore Cala and
Venturino Pisselli in the bedroom of his Cleveland, Ohio, home. His wife, Eva, had
arranged to be away, and her young daughter Marion McArdle had a friend over for the
night. The friend would later recall how Marion prevented her from going to Daniel Kaber
when they first heard his moans, and also how a few days earlier Marion suddenly began
loudly playing the piano while her mother spoke with some unfamiliar men.
Another friend of the Kaber family would play a critical role in unraveling the plot to
kill Daniel Kaber, and bringing Eva Kaber to trial. After becoming convinced that the
women in Kaber’s family were behind the murder, the Pinkertons reviewed Eva Kaber’s
friends looking for a woman they might recruit to go undercover. They settled on Ethel
Berman, whose husband was a good friend of the dead man. Ethel was sent to New York
for a crash course in detective work, spending days running through simulations of sticky
situations she might find herself in during the course of her investigation. After returning to
Cleveland, Ethel succeeded in purloining a letter from Eva to Marion in which she referred
to being unable to pay her husband’s killers for their work. Eva Kaber was convicted and
died in prison, her mother was not charged due to insufficient evidence, and Marion
McArdle was acquitted on the grounds that she was intimidated by her mother into
cooperating with the scheme.
During its colorful 150-year history, Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency, the
oldest company of private investigators in the United States, pursued some of the nation’s
most notorious criminals including Jesse James, Alfred Brady, John Dillinger, and countless
others. Allan Pinkerton founded the company in the 1850s. One of his first contracts was to
provide protective services for the Illinois Central Railroad, whose legal counsel was
Abraham Lincoln. After Lincoln became president in 1861, Pinkerton formed a secret
service to protect the president and to provide intelligence for the Union Army. After the
Civil War, Pinkerton’s sons, Robert and William, expanded the company. By the early
twentieth century, the Pinkertons had several thousand employees and as many clients and
operated offices throughout the United States.
Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency, Part B: Criminal Case File, Series 3: “K”–“N”
contains files on thirty different cases. For researchers in criminology, sociology, the history
of law enforcement, and labor relations, this installment of records should provide many
interesting research opportunities.
