slavery, but southerners thought he would. A Secession Convention was held in Charleston and
almost all members voted to secede from the United States. South Carolina was the first state
to secede from the Union. Other states joined South Carolina and they became a new country
called the Confederate States of America. They wrote a constitution, elected Jefferson Davis to
be president, and formed an army.
