In 1969, Chaz Bojórquez created a symbol that
represented him in the streets, a stylized skull
called “Señor Suerte” (translating to “Mr. Luck”).
Inspired by Mexican folklore, this is considered
one of the earliest examples of stencil art within
graffiti. Señor Suerte embraced the cholo graffiti
writing of his neighborhood, which significantly
influenced Chaz, whose prolific career has
spanned more than 40 years.

Sor Juana Festival
The Museum’s Sor Juana Festival was a big hit
this year, running from late August through
October. The Festival is a multidisciplinary
celebration that honors one of Mexico’s
greatest writers, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
Sor Juana was a celebrated playwright,
mathematician and poet in her own time
and considered to be the first feminist of
the Americas. Through this unique festival,
we celebrate the legacy of Sor Juana Inés
de la Cruz and pay tribute to the rich artistic
accomplishments of Mexican women from
both sides of the border.
The 2012 Festival kicked-off with a free
concert at Millennium Park where more
than 11,000 guests enjoyed the music of
the renowned all-female group Mariachi
Divas. Additionally, the Festival featured La
Catrina: Cultura Meets Couture Fashion
Show, a book reading by Sandra Cisneros
and Ester Hernandez, and a performance
by Stephanie Salas. The Festival concluded
with a reception honoring the 2012 Sor
Juana award honorees: Hilda Cruz-Peña,
Beatriz Margain, Dolores Cupp, Nicole
Marroquin, Francis Garcia, Patti Vasquez,
and Alma Izquierdo. ¡Felicitaciones!
Yollocalli Arts Reach
Yollocalli Arts Reach, a youth initiative of
the Museum, created a mosaic mural that
premiered at the new Ann & Robert H. Lurie
Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Yollocalli
students, parents and volunteers mingled
with fellow community partners who
supported the state-of-the-art children’s
hospital, which opened in June. Yollocalli
reaches 350 Chicagoland teens annually
through performing and visual art programs.
