WCAX Highlights Food Shelf Volunteers & Ongoing Volunteer Needs
"The Food Shelf relies on more than 11,500 volunteer hours each year. Though about 600
people donate their time annually, only 30 of them return weekly.
United Way of Chittenden County is determined to change that.
"We want to help recruit volunteers who are able to be that consistent presence," says
Coordinator of Volunteer Mobilization Laurie Dana. "For example, helping at the Food Shelf, or
answering the phones at COTS where they depend on people being there every day." - Megan
Carpenter, WCAX

UVM Medical Student Complete Public Health Project & Present Findings
On Wednesday, January 22nd, the UVM Medical Student team who have been working on a
public health project for the at the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf presented their findings at
the 10th Annual Poster Presentation and Celebration.

of Health Harry Chen, M.D.

Over the past 10 years, more than
1,000 students have participated,
and 150 projects have been
completed, adding up to roughly
39,000 hours of work.
This year's team provided muchneeded data and analysis on the
Food Shelf's current population of
guests. Their findings included data
on skipped meals, transportation
challenges and the differences in
food insecurity among different
demographic groups. We will be
using this data to inform our
program offerings and future
direction to better serve our food
insecure neighbors!

Opportunities To Get Involved
Regular Volunteer Driver Needed!
The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf is looking for a regular, ongoing volunteer who would be
able to assist us with weekly food pick-ups at Shelburne Supermarket on Friday mornings.
This volunteer opportunity is would require a vehicle, up-to-date driver's license and clean driving
record. The volunteer position would include picking up vegetables, bread, meats and other
perishable grocery donations from Shelburne Supermarket and then dropping them off at our
location at 228 N. Winooski Ave. in Burlington.
This is a great volunteer opportunity for a regular commuter who lives in the Shelburne area! We
would love to find a volunteer who would like to remain on this project for quite a while.
Please contact Anna McMahon, Volunteer Coordinator for the Chittenden Emergency Food
Shelf, at [email protected] if you are interested in this position or if you would like more
information regarding this volunteer opportunity!
The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf works to alleviate hunger by feeding people and
cultivating opportunities. As the largest direct service emergency food provider in Vermont, CEFS
serves over 12,000 people each year.
With your continued support, we can bring about the change necessary to provide opportunities
for those who need them most...
