Yours in Christ, Fr. Ray Abella, Pastor Vol. 2, No. 44 2 WELCOME TO ST. PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH The Pastor’s Corner Joan Madsen asked what the highlight of my vacation was. Perhaps it is better to say, what was it that moved me? I wrote earlier that the reason I included Boston in my itinerary was because of the bombing incident that happened there last April. I wanted to visit the site, actually the two separate bombing sites that killed three and injured scores of spectators of the 2013 Boston Marathon. In my own way, I wanted to honor and pray for the victims and survivors. I had to ask several people for directions as to where exactly the bombing sites were. All there was were mementos; on one site, a pole holding a street sign, wrapped in a canvas-like material which allowed people to pin pieces of paper, written on them names, perhaps of the victims or survivors. On the other site, a sign posted on the window of one of the stores that was destroyed by the blast, thanking the City of Boston for its diligent efforts in cleaning up and restoring the establishment so it could resume business as usual. I took pictures of the marathon finish line, the street, the store fronts, and imagined the chaos, smoke, and damage created by each blast, recalling the images portrayed on TV and in the papers. Before coming to this place, just blocks away, I visited the New England Holocaust Memorial, dedicated on October 22, 1995. Between 1933 and 1945, the Nazis created a regime of hate and victimization in Germany that eventually consumed most of Europe. Driven by racist beliefs, they killed millions of men, women, and children in their quest to dominate Europe and to create a “pure and superior” race. The Nazis singled out the Jews for total extermination, their very existence to be erased from history and memory. Before their defeat in 1945, the Nazi regime murdered six million Jews—more than half of Europe’s Jewish population. This memorial is dedicated to those six million Jewish men, women, and children. It is a marker—a place to grieve for the victims and for the destruction of their culture—a place to give them an everlasting name. “I will give them an everlasting name.” – Isaiah 56:5 The Memorial is designed around six luminous glass towers, each reaching 54 feet high, and each lit internally from top to bottom. The number six has many meanings here: the millions of Jews killed in the Holocaust; the names of the six main death camps; a row of memorial candles; and the six years, 1939-1945, during which the infamous “Final Solution,” the most deadly phase of the Holocaust, took place. In addition, six million numbers are etched in the glass, representing the infamous tattoos inflected on many of the victims’ arms. We build memorials in order to remember. We remember in order to learn. We learn so as not, hopefully, to make the same mistakes. ~ Fr. Ray Abella, Pastor . . . to the Hispanic Choir and Community, the Knights of Columbus, Ulysses Verceles, and Bruce Patrick ! Due to the generous contributions of these organizations and individuals, St. Patrick’s has a new Yamaha keyboard for use in the church! NOVEMBER 3, 2013 THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3 To help Catholics learn more about the lives of the saints, the U. S. Bishops’ Conference has offered a list of 10 American saints for the Year of Faith. The saint for November 2013 is ~ VENERABLE FULTON SHEEN ~ May 8, 1895 ~ December 9, 1979 Archbishop and TV Personality A college education, a TV show and a passionate devotion to the call of the priesthood all combined in one very witty man - proof that sainthood is not only challenging and holy, but fun. Peter "Fulton" John Sheen was born in El Paso, Illinois in 1895. As a young man, he turned down a sizable scholarship to pursue his true desire, the holy priesthood of the Catholic Church. At his ordination, he made a promise that he would spend one hour a day in Eucharist Adoration - a promise he kept faithfully for the rest of his life. In 1951, the newly-appointed Bishop Sheen began a TV series entitled "Life is Worth Living." In 1952, he won an Emmy award for "Most Outstanding Television Personality." He was named an Archbishop in 1969, and ten years later, on October 3rd of 1979, just months before his death, Archbishop Sheen was embraced by Pope John Paul II and told, "You have written and spoken well of the Lord Jesus. You are a loyal son of the Church!" The Knights will provide rides to and from this event. It’s fun to ride with a Knight! If you would like to donate flowers for the altar in memory of a loved one, an anniversary, birthday, or other special occasion, please contact Marge Nath 532.2229. INTO YOUR HANDS, O LORD, we commend the souls of our recently departed, especially Dolores Retzlaff May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. 4 WELCOME TO ST.
